Awesome, they are not so common as a pet here in Europe. Also nice how you're putting in the effort of giving them fresh brine shrimp daily, I imagine you would need good timing and routine for that (coming from someone who always procrastinates the weekly fruit fly cultures lol)
@daffysreptiles Жыл бұрын
Is it newts in general that are not common as pets over there or is it this species specifically? And yes doing the brine shrimp is a lot of work but the survival rate was much lower when I tried raising them on microworms alone so I would say that the brine shrimp is necessary! It’s funny you bring that up tho, I frequently procrastinate doing fruit fly cultures too lol! I think it’s just because it’s more time consuming than making brine shrimp tho😂

@@daffysreptiles apart from axolotls and fire bellied newts we don't have many caudates in the hobby here or they are not as common maybe. There are almost no imports from the US or Canada (you guys have some awesome salamanders btw), probably because of B-Sal, and most of our endemic newts and salamanders fall under CITES A, so you need paperwork for each individual animal which makes breeding a real pain. We do have a huge dart frog community though.

Great video thank you. I'm very new to the hobby and have 5 newts at 2 months old. What shrimp do you have in the tank with your newts? And what temperature is that tank kept at?
@daffysreptiles Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! Those newts will be full grown in no time! The shrimp in the tank are red Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) I put a few in as a test and now there is a ton in there. I keep the tank at 20C or 67-68F.

Do you need a specific water temperature to induce them to breed? And do the pellets have like calcium and vitamin? Im curious if they can get metabollic bone disease. These are my dream animal im getting soon and these are just my only two questions about them thanks lol
@daffysreptiles Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t need to be a specific water temperature but a big water change with water that’s 2-3 degrees colder definitely helps! The pellets should have everything you need to keep them healthy but variety is always key! Other than the pellets I feed them night crawlers and a mix off different repashy diets in a gel form! If you have any other questions let me know!!

Do you find they become males and females at 50/50 ratio? I heard that you need to increase temp to 32C to have them sex change to males. I just had my first batch of new borns and should I raise them at same temp? I do want males/females mix tho
@daffysreptiles11 ай бұрын
Hey! I have in all my clutches so far had about a 50/50 ratio and I’ve never increased the water temperature to 32C that does seem quite high for this species! I raise the babies at the same temperature the adults are kept at!

And do you have a way to contact Adam Wickens? If so he does jot know what this is either but I could explain it to both of you! So please try to convince him

Well, their sex is certainly a lot more graceful than human sex, you've got to give them that.

When you first showed the newts in amplexus they were both dark in color then toward the end of the mating segment one was light (whitish), obviously a different newt. At first I thought he was trying to “kick it” with a larvae but when I didn’t see any gills I was confused. Are there albino or luntino adult ribbed newts or was that male just a child predator? 😂 _no, but seriously...?_
@daffysreptiles Жыл бұрын
Lmaooooo!! No there is a leucistic female in there 😂 I was just able to catch more shots of the two darker newts in amplexus so I showed more of that hahaha!
