As an old school and retired(year right) web dev I realize there are two paths to web design these days. Coding your own and then pay for play. I learned a huge lesson in putting my eggs in a basket ala learning macromedia years and years ago. Where are those softwares today? Gone. Stay nimble. Learn to code so you can get a deeper understanding of what the software is doing. Then scale in and learn that and scale back out to coding. It can be intimidating but it’s just a hump.

Yeah that was a weird time when it came to building websites (remember that a big chunck of people use to build with frontpage 🤣). I loved Macromedia they were a cool company.

Well, it's certainly easier now than it used to be, there are so many easy languages to get into, and vast numbers of libraries and resources up online for free. A budding "entrepreneur" would be much better off doing a bit of Python and a bit of HTMX than paying X dollars per month to some no-code drag and drop company that promises their patented trashy drag and drop app building system is definitely going to make you a millionaire.. but only if you pay the premium at $15 and get the AI integration of course.

For those wondering: don’t rely on this. Learn to code to gain a deep understanding. AI is not suitable for larger projects due to the errors it can make, as well as its lack of creativity compared to a human. AI is more useful for quick and simple code snippets, where you can verify that everything is correct without having to write it all out by hand.
@chrisstucker181312 күн бұрын
Is it even worth it? This is just the next layer of abstraction - the same way that programmers once wrote in assembly language, but now we have compilers to do that. It’s pretty wild that AI can do this now, imagine what it’ll do in like 5 years time or less; you probably won’t even need to write or touch any code; it’ll probably all be done under the hood. Of course, I’m just talking about websites; programmers doing the really hard stuff - especially anything math heavy - will still be firmly in demand.

We used to use it to scaffold SEO landing pages. All of our sites ran on WordPress with a bunch of custom in-house plugins and libraries - and we have a plugin that will take HTML, CSS, JS and use that with dynamic text to scaffold SEO landing pages for any city/state and keyword. Webflow lets us buld the responsive HTML and styles clickity split. All we needed was one master page per keyword, and we could have as many pages as we wanted stood up with custom fields for each location so we didn't get duplicate content issues.

I just starting learning web flow on Monday 5/20 and I’m 70-80% done with an awesome website in my opinion. I’m able to understand how to use the platform, but I can’t “build anything”. I mainly copy templates from web flows “made in web flow secontion”, and then I turn those templates to be what I want. I saved a stupid amount of time doing this. I also use relume which really helped me plan/map out the website. How I learn how to use web flow by completing web flow 101 (which is in web flows free online University) and then anything that I didn’t learn from the university I just looked up on KZbin. Webflow University is honestly one of the best online educational course of every taken and I honestly wanted more when i finished it. I would say it took me around 10-25 hours, I would say it has the same learning curve as photoshop. If you don’t have enough time to learn use framer. Web flow is like photoshop. Framer is like Canva. Sorry that was kinda long but I hoped that helped!

So what happens if this site/service closes? Relying on AI to do EVERYTHING means no actual skills have been learned. So if the AI service isn't accessible, you're screwed. Real life example: My girlfriend runs a new women's sport club and one of the members offered to make a logo for the club, as she claimed to be a 'logo designer'. My girlfriend received 4 designs that were obviously AI generated. The 'designer' was immediately caught out when asked to make changes, as she was at the mercy of what the AI could generate. She simply couldn't make the required changes, as she had no knowledge of design and no experience with design software. Clicking a generate button and copy/pasting isn't design, it's grifting. Encouraging people to take this approach with potential clients is disingenuous at best and at worst, is a con. This isn't design, it's grifting.

Yeah and the site would rank nowhere on google for any roofing keywords and the business would just have a pretty website with zero visitors 😂 my crappy one page roofing lead gen webpage would be page one position 1 , making a national roofing company very happy. Most businesses don’t want or need a 20k fancy dancy spiny website, they want a simple site where the potential visitor can scan , understand, fill in a form. No one wants to play with spiny stuff and go all gooey over fancy animations. A fancy dancy site has its place but it ain’t in the service business place.
