How to Build a 30 amp or 50 amp / 220v Extension Cord

I recently needed to extend my Level 2 EV charger to a location just outside of my garage, I was able to build this 30a extension to move the charger right close to the door, and then I could easily feed the J1772 connector under the door to my vehicle!
This is how I built a 220v extension cord, with 10ga wire suitable for 30 amp service. However, the exact same approach would be just fine for a 250v extension cord, or a 50a extension cord, all you would need to change was the gauge of wire used.

I am doing a similar project. However, my ev charger is only 16 amps. I’m doing a 20 amp using 12 gauge wire

If you are leaving the extension receptacle in a fixed location, this should work well. If it is being moved in extremely cold temperatures, the jacket/insulation of the cable you used might fail, since it is not flexible in cold. Nice to see the JVC 770 made it home !

Good point! This is for a specific, semi-permanent location, so it's good. Like I said in the video, adjust the process and make one for your needs! :)

You have the ground, and each other one is 115v so it shouldn't matter whether it's the bigger one or not. There both 115v and a neutral.

This was hard to watch! Wrong type of wire. Wrong colors used. White should not be used as a power wire. Red is never a ground.
