It takes so much effort to assemble such a large tourbillon. It is insane to think about people can build one that can be fit inside a wristwatch.

Stereo microscope and do everything under that, watchmakers back in the day had it truly rough, eye loupes suck! The complexity of the gears definitely wouldn't be possible back then for a tri axis so I'd think but with CNC here we are, but for regular movements we still got people doing it the old ways which is what I'm getting into and I love it

I’m blown away. I love watches and tourbillons and this is just unbelievable. I can’t believe how well it works and looks. It would make a great teaching tool for watchmaking schools Etc. The ingenuity to make this is seriously awesome. How much would you charge to make one and sell it? Maybe you can manufacture and sell them as a sort of puzzle or hobby kit. Just fabulous!

So cool! I built yr tourbillon mechanism (that was definitely the hardest thing I've ever 3d printed so far but so much fun), so obviously now I gotta do this one. I really like how your now using more robust screws and it doesn't look like you have any gear trains where they are 'hanging' in the air like the tourbillon (in part of the hour gear train and back down to the hour ring). I had to redo that gear train part so many times to get proper gear meshes. Basically, after printing and building one of your previous projects, I can clearly see how your designs are progressing and getting even better/more optimized. Stupid awesome!

Ever since I saw this device, I'm really thinking how to make it usable not only as a display piece. With 120 mins of runtime on metal spring, I can see small hall sensor on the right side of the device, with a magnet embedded into minute hand, which at every full hour will trigger x revolutions of winding mechanism by something like NEMA 11 or Sanyo Pancake 42 (given they have enough torque). There is enough space inside the base to hide small arduino and stepper controller, and it could be powered with megnetically attaching contacts, so no ugly barrel jacks anywhere. Still windable by key for 100% mechanical feel, but placed on a designated spot will function as a desk clock. I guess, better bearings and some PTFE lubricant here and there would do wonders for longevity.

I think it's basically a wind-up, spring-powered clock. The part that rotates like a gyroscope basically normalizes the effect of gravity on the flywheel. It's not very useful in a clock that stays in the same orientation forever and is more generally used in mechanical wristwatches.

I started watching with no idea what tourbillon was. I looked it up in the dictionary and all it said was `whirlwind`. As I watched it dawned on me that this is very similar to a timepiece. My father was a watchmaker, old school watchmaker. It brought back a lot of memories as well as being fun to watch (no pun intended). I suppose this based on a Renaissance model or design? Similar to an Astrolabe? Thank you for posting.
