Filtration explained. The gray water will flow down the black pipe to top of the container; the filter cut out will catch big particles. and then off to the yard or run off but what about chemicals used inside the home. how is that filtered? or is it okay to let this be unfiltered

Lets talk about chemicals: 1st) for laundry diversions: We find that current laundry detergents do not harm the landscape or garden plants. Thirty years ago the formulas where harmful to us and the environment. Today, they have been reformulated to be better for our skin and thus the environment. Take away, no need to change brands to divert your greywater to the landscape or garden. If you decided to use a environmentally friendly brand like ECOS, that is even better, since these brands are usually made with natural cleansers, but it is not a requirement. 2nd) for whole house greywater diversions. A whole house greywater system, usually has a way to divert the greywater to the sewer, this allows you to use a tub cleaner or wash a child with poop all over them (if you every change a diaper you know what I mean) and not worry about your garden or landscape. We have plenty of videos on our channel, showing multiple ways to divert the greywater between the yard and the sewer. Thank you for the question.

There are other companies who sell complete systems starting at $700 dollars. Just try searching the internet for Greywater Filters. This site is about trying to help individuals build similar systems for a lot less.

A washing machine can put out a lot of water very quickly. Are these totes and drain lines able to handle that flow? I’m thinking they can because it’s a flow through system. But I wanted to ask anyway.

Your answer is correct, the flow through into the greywater pipes is fast so no worries of over filling the totes. I have even reduce the size to flower pots (see other videos on that type of design)

Current plumbing code in my city requires reused grey water be filtered to nsf 350 standard. Those systems have blowers aerators membranes and cost $5000 or more ridiculous!!!

Most city codes will allow for simple greywater systems to be used, as long as the water is applied subsurface. It is when you want to apply the water above ground with a sprinkler system that a NSF 350 standard is required. Have the building code / inspector check the National Plumbing Code. Approach the building code desk with the basic concept: A greywater system, delivering water subsurface is a septic leach field and all cities inspectors know how to review the plans for such a system. - Hope that helps, and thank you for the question.

Each state and area is different. In California the law was signed in by governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the final authority is the county health department and city building code. In the City of Los Angeles greywater systems are required on all new buildings and in the City of Long Beach greywater systems are encourage.
