That makes sense because I did hear that the writer of overlord actually used to play D&D and the reason he started writing the story was because his D&D group couldn't get together anymore, so the main character being in the game by himself in the end was relating to that

@Heitor Pedro de Godoi Most overtly, undead characters get a list of immunities lifted straight from 3.5e. The way spells are structured into "tiers" also resembles d&d's spell levels. It even includes a "super tier" that follows different rules than normal spells kinda like epic spells, and a "0 tier" in the new world. Some spells are also just about perfect matches for d&d spells, even ones you can't properly represent in that style of game like Time Stop. Magic is also recovered more or less through long rests, which would also be a no-no. You can skip over the resting time in tabletop or single-player games, but that wouldn't really work in a game like YGGDRASIL. Making players just wait around to return to full strength might make sense as some kind of monetization, except the game explicitly didn't have anything like mana potions (also like d&d). There's stuff not directly related to magic, of course. The leveling system also shows influence from multiclassing and 3.5e race mechanics, and the lore references relatively easy communication with the game staff. That's probably enough rambling from me, though.

Part of what can make your minions really strong as a necromancer is in taking the "inspiring leader" feat. Giving a bunch of your skeletons/zombies an extra chunk of HP in the form of temporary hitpoints just for 10 in game minutes of talking is really really worth it

If you want magic jar a unique creature like Jarlaxle and surpass your attunement limitations without breaking your 20 wizard progression. Absolutely unecessary but fitting for an evil necromancer. Albeit should you want to bribe the dm go for an additional attunement with a possession by a trickster god because why not ("From the Temple of the Nine Gods in Tomb of Annihilation there are Trickster Gods. Leaving the process of how to get possessed to the adventure book ("hint: you'll want to fail a saving throw) you want to get possessed by Obo’laka for her granted power of: The host can attune to one additional magic item. When Obo’laka leaves the host, all magic items to which the host is attuned are no longer attuned to it.").

Interesting fact about Ainz, in Yggdrasil a regular build can only allow 300 spells to be memorized to use, 400 with cash-shop items, but Ainz's build allows him to memorize 718. What's even greater though is the fact that Ainz has memorized not only 718 spells but also countless more solely so he knew how to counter them. Because of his crazy amount of time memorizing spells he is one of the most knowledgeable spell casters in Nazarick. Even though he had a relatively suboptimal build he still had a good K/D ratio due to his knowledge and skill in pvp combat. With his biggest weakness being him fighting players who had builds that he didn't know about.

Honestly, ainz's most horrifying power is by far his access to the Hidden class "eclipse" which is literally described as "a power over death that eclipses all life in creation" and its signature meta magic "the goal of all life is death" which in exchange for delaying the next insta death type spell's effect by 12 seconds allows said spell to kill even the unkillable, in the game this meant killing races with inmunity to insta death effects, such as all undead races, which counted as already being dead and construcs which were never alive to begin with, and in the new world, it literally kills the entire enviroment within the enhanced spell's effective radious, thanos snapping all vegetation away, turning the ground into sand and fillling the air with deadly miasma that rots the lungs of anyone who breaths that air, thank god that this skill has a 4 whole days CD period

All that does is allow the spell to affect everything it comes into contact with regardless what that thing is or what immunities or resistances to death it may have. The whole desolation blah blah is result of Wail of the Banshee spell. An old 9th circle instant death D&D spell.

The name "Sorcerer King" was chosen kind of last minute. Really Ainz has access to and uses many different kinds of magic that would technically put him in every class related to magic of any kind. Mage, wizard, warlock, spellsword, etc. He's actually pretty much every class imaginable since he can change classes at will and can just pull appropriate armor, weapons and items out of his ass or straight up thin air.

Magic Casters in Overlord can tap into other traditions of Magic even without multi-classing or changing Classes. Though, the traditions need to be of the same School. Ainz who’s a pure Necromancer is categorized as an Arcane Magic Caster. That means while he specializes in Necromancy, he can tap into other traditions under the Arcane School, like Sorcery, the various kinds of Elementalism, Diabolism, etc. Evil Eye is another good example. She’s specifically a Sorceress and Earth Elementalist, but she has tapped into a bit of Necromancy and Acid Elementalism too. The only Class transformation Ainz used so far is “Perfect Warrior”, though the name is false advertising. While it converts the user’s Class Levels, the user doesn’t become a proper Warrior. They’ll temporarily lose the innate ability to Cast Magic, and in exchange, they’ll temporarily be able to bypass any equipment’s Class restrictions, as well as have the appropriate Stats of a pure Warrior, albeit without any Warrior abilities. PW-mode Ainz would be easy pickings for normal Shalltear. His old friends’ gear does help, but not too much as he can’t draw their full power. Even if he can fully use them, without the perks and Skills of a proper Warrior, he’d be very weak. That’s why he had to level the playing field by tricking Shalltear into exhausting her Skills and Spells, especially making her waste her Einherjar. On the topic of gear, I mentioned that he can’t draw out the full power of his old friends’ equipment. That’s because they simply aren’t made for him. Like say, The Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown has the power to buff Ainz’ “Despair Aura” series of Skills. To anyone who doesn’t have any “Despair Aura” this power is useless, so even if they could somehow wield the AOG Staff, they wouldn’t get as much out of it as Ainz himself, the person who it was tailor-made for. As for where he gets those gear, they were just in his Inventory. It takes a second to reach into which could leave him vulnerable for a moment. That’s what those Cash-Shop sticks were for; they were Quick Change Items. There are also craftable Quick Change Items, and they’re arguably better than the Cash Shop ones since they’re reusable.

I essentially have this character made from my last Evil Campaign. Except my own build of course. He is a Hadozee Death Domain Cleric at level 20. 20 Constitution and 20 Wisdom. He unfortunately doesn't have the strength to be a Melee class as I left it at 13. But, he has a bag of Holding with Potions of Storm Giant Strength. To compensate. A Staff of the Magi, Robe of the ArchMagi, and Mask of the Dragon Queen. He also wears a ring of three wishes and Ring of Regeneration. He also has other wonderous items inside his bag of holding that he amassed. How? Well, after a full length level 1 to 20 evil campaign 5e, and party members dying due to betrayal my character who faithfully served the Evil God of Knowledge Tepeneth was granted a means by knowledge to amass an Undead army to conquer the whole continent. And, then the Goddess of Death Nova brought back 3 said dead allies to aid in fighting Tepenath who had discovered a divine word capable of killing all the gods. Except Nova as the Goddess of death cannot be killed. So Tepenath went on a God killing spree and the whole campaign involved us essentially freeing him which lead to his God killing. 5 years later is when the other PC's were resurrected and came back to fight Tepenath with the Help of Nova. My character had amassed his undead army filled with monsters of all kinds including Dragons that had been dead for centuries Ancient and the like. Tepenath really was a good choice. But, my character being a Death Domain secretly followed Nova so in the last battle his undead army turned against Tepenath and all of the evil characters fought against him so they could receive wishes granted by Nova. The battle ended when our level 20 Wizard used his 9th level wish to become Tepenath the God of Wisdom. It was epic in description. Tepenath now transferred to the wizards body and Nova disentegrated him outright. And, for everyone's help we all got wishes granted. My character wished to become the undisputed ruler of the entire continent with no negative consequences. And, the campaign ended that session. this world we were in was a part of multi campaign adventure spanning across three different continents with different parties adventuring on each continent. And, my character got to rule this one. And we described our characters 7 years after the events with the God War. My character obsessed with his rule and demanding absolute dominion had used all the Kingdoms and his undead army to scour the continent for wonderous magic items. And he succeeded. He found all the items mentioned above and amassed too much gold to contain. Although he has to rule in balance or the Goddess Nova will end his life. He's essentially OP and has used two of the three wishes on his ring to ensure he cannot die and will always rule the continent in balance. It;'s a shame this world won't be used again as my DM is now working on a whole new world with two other DM's. My most powerful and OP character has achieved what every player wants but, knows is game breaking. And, there's no way to use him except in my imagination of what his rule has become. Great times.

If we go with the canon, lord ainz' cloak literally only has an intimidation effect. I would switch the Robe of the archmage with the Hand and eye of vecna, which indeed only require one attunemend slot when used together. It Switches your alignment, but i think lord Ainz already is neutral evil. The single abilities of eye and hand are very op but Combined they become one of the most powerful things in DnD. Combined they can cast wish. Ainz indeed has the ability to cast "wish upon a Star", but doesn't do it himself because of the drawbacks. Maybe I'd instead replace it with the Ring of three wishes, because he has a Ring that allows him to cast that reality warping spell 3 Times.

Ainz/ Momon... every time he summons an undead... there is a price for it. That price, canonically, comes from the treasury vault of the Tomb of Nazerick. Meaning if he only has so much resources, the undeads he can summon become finite at some point. However... they farmed so much he has NOTHING to worry about.

Ainz' build actually isn't combat optimized at all. He focused on learning an extremely wide range of unique spells that he could get creative with. For a max level character, he's actually pretty bad at fighting. Ulbert, another member of the Ainz Ooal Gown guild, was the most powerful combat mage of the group.

OP Necromancers are great in theory but in practice they tend to not work because they bog down combat drastically with all their minions. Even if your DM merges your army into "bulk units by type" you're still potentially adding 2-5 extra "turns" to combat. When you take into account a 4-6 person party plus any of their minions/familiars and the enemies/npcs it can turn combat into a slog. I love the idea and concept but it takes a certain DM and table to pull off reasonably and you have to be pretty forthcoming with all your ideas to break the game as they're not something you can just spring on your DM and not expect them to be very upset.

I find necromancers are really not powerful at all and they face a lot of stigma. I had played them from 2nd ed to 3.0. Really sucks when a cleric or paladin joins your group and takes every opportunity to destroy your minions. I did critical hit with the ray spell that reduces a targets strength on a dragon. Even better it was in a special magic zone in Castle grey hawk that raised it to X3. Let's just say the dragon's claw/tail/bite attacks hit like a kitten after that. Not sure about the newer versions of the game but traditionally a death priest could do the necromancer bit far better than a wizard. I agree about shadows being way more dangerous than their CR would indicate.

Umm my dude, Ains is a Lich. Dump stat Con so when you make the transition to UNLIMITED COSMIC POWER I mean, Unlife, you are not loosing too many precious stats. Bonus points if you had a negative con as a squishy as the Null con state effectively treats your con as ten.

The only problems with all this is that most dms won't let you do all that, and even if they do now you have 100 or so creatures that all get a turn in combat. So that means each round of combat is going to take all day IRL to play through. 5e just isn't equipped to handle this kind of stuff.

Yeah anytime I've dealt with summons especially if they're a massive hoard, I just have them go right after the player, and if it's a massive hoard I just do some mass role

I had an entire quest line in a D&D campaign that was all about making their way through the tomb of nazarik, they wound up having to fight different guardians, it turned out to be a ton of fun, I did have to tone it down a little bit to not make it completely unwinnable, but one of the players actually wound up taking over the tomb in the end and becoming the new ruler

if you want it to be even more like Ainz, and your DM uses the books Grim Hollows Players Guide. you can become a Lich and take the traits for summoning :D making all cr 1 or lower permanent yours (lvl 2 lich) your undead when they are brought to 0 hp move full movement and then make an attack (lvl 3 Lich) when even you bring a humanoid to 0hp you can chose to reanimate it into a zombie (lvl 4 Lich) ofc there also comes drawback the higher lvl lich you become :D

@@dndbuilds Lorewise, it is still possible to achieve 10th level and beyond casting (though Mystra herself has gone out of her way to obscure its existence), but there's no in-game mechanics to govern it for 5e. In any case, 9th level seems to be as far as you're getting without lengthy and elaborate rituals performed by multiple top-tier casters.

@Drake Ford That or using straight up artifacts like the book of Exalted Deeds for a cleric or paladin. Clerics could theoretically upcast a 9th lvl spell to 10th due to the items properties. I imagine the first time this gets done it will do more than just a damage boost.

Do you mean "how to build a broken necromancer in 3.5"? cause i don't see how u can control that much undead in 5e. the only broken necro spell in 5e is finger of death - and there you are so wrong (for 5e). finger of death can animate any HUMANOID killed by this spell. no concentration. no limit how much. look for a village and build your zombie army. only way in 5e.

Well you could go the slow way with finger of death, this does still work in 5th edition, with how anime dad is worded you can continue to take control of progressively more creatures, as long as you're also reasserting control of others. Not to mention the true polymorph shifting does basically give you unlimited undead to control, and your final feature from being a necromancer also allows you to take control of a pretty powerful undead

@@dndbuilds with animate dead u can only create zombies or skeleton. You have to cast this spell again to maintain control. And the maximum number is 5+2*each spell lvl over 3 for as many spell slots you want to sacrifice. Only the necro feat of lvl 14 could be sort of breaking this rule. Except if u loose control after 24h, It could be ruled as "the creature don't have to make the save anymore." So if you don't fight against any evil necromancer, the chances are, u don't get your own army of undead at lvl 14. And you still have to survive till lvl 14 as a wizard. But you sure realize the soft Coffee lock as a reborn sorcerer/wizard multiclass? No need to sleep, endless spell slots to create more zombies with finger of death?

If you didn't miss out on spells by doing that I totally would... Actually now that I think about it, it might be possible to make that viable since Wizards can copy spells into their spell book maybe they could still cast them even without enough levels in wizard while still having enough spellcasting levels to hit 9th level spells... But I'd have to dive into the rules on if that would actually be allowed.

For background, I’d go Knight of Solamnia for the feat, take the Knight of the Crown feat later for more fear. You want decent stats, and basically any feats you want.

On a scale of 1-10, 1 being totally cool with it, and 10 being he murders you and raises YOU as a zombie, how mad would your dm be with you raising that many undead and fighting with them? Also, how useful are those undead? I admit I dont play D&D I just enjoy reading and watching this stuff, so im not sure. I am aware enough to know that chances are the mass units are probably going to be individually terrible and weak, but I was curious if they would be at all useful in most combat? Or is it like, the enemy casts wall of fire and by the time the duration ends, half your troops got one shot trying to charge through it?

how useful are these undead? it will vary, some will be nothing but cannon fodder for wizards and actual soliders, but those same cannon fodder units are more than enough to wipe a village off a map in one evening if they are just....villagers with only a few warriors and maybe a spellcaster. Some of the other units could take out a low-mid tier adventuring party in their own right, and the ability to mass not even all of them into a single 500hp undead creature for a single day? Enough to lay siege. Plus you still have magical firepower yourself, so fireballs, earthquakes, rock to mud (a fav. when storming the walls), polymorph in a dragon, are all still on the table. And if you are really going of the "Ains" flavor, you have demons bound to your service like Albedo and and Demiurge already. edit...I re-read your post, and got a different interpretation, as a DM I would allow it. First you would have to get to that level. Second, everything the characters do , does not happen in a bubble. A threat of the Ains lvl magnitude is a global event in my worlds and there would be clerics and paladins (If not whole Religious Orders and Religions) up to and including possible the Gods themselves , how does the Goddess of Death feel about usurped?, and adventurers in general coming after you all the time. IF you were doing this kind of crazy necromancy, you have declared war against someone, whether your know it or not.🤣😂 Someone is coming after you. As far as the mechanics, most of it would be hand waved, you give the order and 100 skeletons move on the left flank, and the outcome is ...rolll roll roll, ...this. Now for the better units, it would have to depend on conditions, the 500hp super-unit?...oh, we are playing that out!

To everyone who needs a encounter for there d and d game: how about a brother and sister slightly anthropomorphic red and blue dragon who live in a huge library , they would be of course be the size of ordinary dragons but in stead of flying they use there wings as a cloak around there body (throw in some glasses and wizard hats on the both of em too) since they are friendly wizard dragons who as long as you cook them a dinner that corresponds too there riddle they will give the party some knowledge about something important (perhaps some ancient text about you bbeg?). According to the wiki, Ainz is immune to spells of 60th level and below (out of 100). Translate to dnd, he's immune to spells of 6th level of below (Oh boy Rakshasa level immunity), and immune to Poison, Necrotic, Lightning, Cold, Acid, Radiant, and nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. He has a spell specifically to nullifying his weakness to holy damage. On top of that, swap your Wand of Orcus for a +3 Magical Grimoire if you want less picking fights with demon gods. it adds 3 to your spell DC. Much easier to get, and that with your staff and robes gives your spells a DC of 26 (8+6+5+2+2+3). I have a homebrew build for him as an enemy (it's CR30 to the shock of nobody).

So some fun facts from the light novel that are just plain old sad. Despite how seemingly intelligent Ainz is. In the world he actually lived in was a dystopian nightmare where corps had ruined the environment (It's so bad that to go outside you have to wear googles and air filtered mask) as well as having the government under their control. Due to how their world works Ainz only received up to an elementary education. If you wanted higher education you had to pay large sums of money or actually be a CEO or higher management children. Now this isn't to say he's stupid as he's not. His understanding of the game was pretty much unrivalled but you see in the anime and light novel with the constant questioning of himself. He knows how ordinary he is and is scared what will happen if the NPC's find out. He wants to do anything and everything to bring them happiness. The light novel was created by the author due to his own feelings on the subject of missing friends. A key message of the story is how sad Ainz is after all his friends start slipping away. This happened to the author of the series as well. He was a huge DnD fan and would have fun with all friends but eventually they had responsibilities and what not and so eventually he was alone with no-one to play with anymore. He created Overlord as a way to inspire others to get into the hobby as well as allow to him to use his knowledge to create a series that fellow DnD fans will love.

It could be, but I would make sure to have war caster and resilient (con saves) first. They will have more consistent use, while the metamagic feat is very limited due to having so little sorcery points, and it might not help much to build up your undead army.

there is a hard cap of 30 for any stat in D&D, even with a tome of clear thought, but yeah if you have a wizard with an intelligence of 30... woof... then the very rare arcane grimore, and a robe of the arcmage (which we see ains actually wearing lol) we can get a final spell save DC of 29, it only takes a few hundred years to recharge the book ofc, and for that? just cast the sequester spell, which locks you in stasis for 100 years so the centuries can zoooom by, easy of course your entire party will have long quit the campaign by the time you've done all this but hey, that's the plot, now you are the DMs bbeg in their next campaign edit, there is a legendary ioun stone that increases your proficiancy bonus by 1, this raises Spell save DC to a 30! nice even number

well can not make Ainz with 4.0 or 5.0 rulesets, as you are hard lvl caped to lvl 20 and really can't multi-class the way you'd need to build Ainz. Would need 3.0/3.5 edition to make Him. He is just too powerful for 4.0 or 5.0 rulesets. With everything you put into this crappy 5.0ed build, Ainz would just need to snap his fingers and your necro is instant vaporized. A maxed out 5ed dnd char (reguardless of class/multi-class) is around the power of the top tier adventurer's in this world, whom Ainz can kill with vary little effort.

this all seems to to stem from DnD 5e The Dread Necromancer is able to put some massive hurt on foes. and ya its a slow burn but if you get a DM that knows NOTHING about the class and you've studied it deeply.....well lets just say that you would no longer be invited to the table....... You figured it out already, but I am mentioning it nonetheless. Ainz build is completely focused on role play, he didn't make a build that is actually useful in combat. He was the weakest player in his guilt in any Shape or form. He had only two things going for him, he had an immense amount of mana (mp) and chose class level ups wisely, so that he could learn more than twice the amount of spells than normal. I believe he increased it from 300 (the max) to 400 with cash shop items which is possible. But after that, he did simply chose wisely how to level up. Edit: he isnt the weakest, but compared to those who focused on pvp, he is.

Funny. Ainz is actually a broken D&D character. The author wrote Overlord because his friends got to busy to play D&D. Even in universe his character is broken as all heck. His entire guild figured out the most busted ways to make op characters.

I know is a relative old video but I have a question that I could not take out of my mind. All of the undead magic that I see people say to use and do tons of undead have a timer on it, like create undead, it only last for 24hours, SO is a temporary undead army with a high potential of get of your control or Im missing something? I want to create a necromancer that could really becoma a villain in the world, and the DM is ok with it if I do within the rules... how could I really have a permanent undead army? Another question, the 14level subclass feat comand undead is better to do what general people say and get a mummy lord ? cuz I think would be better to control a Nightwalker that is CR20, do tons of damage and good health or even a white dragon dracolich?

There's the alternative long game if your character has a long enough lifespan and your campaign somehow lasts long enough you can reread a tome in a century (100 years). Albeit bribes would probably be more reasonable tomes are already real powerful.
