I used your video to get started on making my flags for people, I found in the end instead of clamping them I leave some gaps in between the stripes, gives it a more rustic look, yours are amazing as well

I built two flags this weekend, one for myself and one for my dad.. I ended up just spray painting the stars on because It was looking so good at that point and I was scared I would mess up if I tried to carve them. I actually thought the painted on stars looked great so I’m pretty happy with it. My neighbor stopped and offered to buy one off me so I guess I’m building him one next. Anyways great video man

@@BuildDadBuild I ended up starting it today. I used clear pine. Everything is great so far. I used Keda dye for the red and blue and sun bleached stain for the white. I dumped almost a whole bag of red Keda powder in 6oz of water... Dude... What an amazing red. I had to go over it about 6 times to get it where I really wanted it so I think I'll use stain next time. Wish me luck on the stars. My router doesn't have a plunge base so I might use the old hammer and chisel. This is such a fun build

New subscriber! Great video, watching your other videos now. I'm new to woodworking and it's great to watch videos where the person building stuff doesn't have $100K worth of equipment.
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub. Definitely NOT $100K worth of equipment! LOL I'd say you could stock a pretty decent shop for under $1K. My advice if you have your eye on a specific tool is to use the Honey plugin for your browser (not a sponsor). You can follow items and get alerts when the price drops. It's how I buy all my clamps!!
@kriztahl8475
@kriztahl8475 5 жыл бұрын
@@BuildDadBuild I'll have to check out that plugin, I've heard of it before but thought it was a gimmick. My lacking areas in my shop right now are a router, table saw, and clamps... can never get enough help holding things in place.
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 5 жыл бұрын
You can manage most tablesaw applications with a circular saw and a straight edge (until you can pick one up). Definitely spend the money on a good table saw, you'll be happy you spent the extra $$. I LOVE my palm router: amzn.to/2ZvpMyW And I've found that I really don't pull out my larger plunge router all that often. That little Bosch has plenty of power. And as for clamps, you're absolutely right. You can never have enough. Small clamps you can usually get away with Harbor Freight or something equally as inexpensive. But when you get into 36" and 48" clamps (probably anything 24" and up)...you really start to see a difference in cheap versus spendy. Like I said, I have a running list of items on my "drop list" with Honey. You can search in Amazon, find a tool, and add it to your drop list. You can see the number of times the price has changed and set an alert to let you know if it drops under a certain percentage of the current price. Pretty handy!

Someone ordered a 60" flag from me the other day. The stripes are easy, I can use use 1x3s for the stripes. The Union is the hard part. I had to print off a bunch of files at different sizes until I got the right size, then I put the printouts over some poster board and started cutting out the stars to make a diy template. Now that ai have the dimensions I can order a better template. The stars are a lot bigger so carving them out should be easier.

How do you stop thr boards from warping so much? My boards warped so much that the front of the flag was not smooth, instead it was uneven from board to board (stripe to stripe).

Hey Brett! try burning the backs of the boards to get them to warp the opposite direction. And keep in mind that a little warping adds to the rustic charm of the piece. Cheers

I added this to my watch later because there is white and red in your flag and I want to make a #Canadian flag. Awesome idea!

Can you explain what you meant about spraying water when burning? Is this before, during and after? I have had some wood warp on me and never heard of water helping. Thanks!
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin! Yeah, I carry a little spray bottle of water with me WHILE I burn. I've found it reduces warping if I spray in between passes with the torch. Cheers!

Did you use the bigger stencil that came in the pack when using 37inch boards
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Yes...the smaller stencil is pretty small. But it was cheaper to buy that pack than just the stencil I needed.

I’ve had some wood warp slightly on me before putting a flag together. I have been spraying my final product as shown in this video but concerned it may warp more. Any suggestions for sealing? Maybe 2 coats of polyurethane?
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 4 жыл бұрын
2-3 coats of poly should be fine. If you want high gloss you might want to use Halcyon... If you have a board warp on you, try torching the back of the board to flatten it back out.

should i spray the wood with water multiple times while burning or after? I have tried shou sugi ban with thinner wood, 3/8 - 1/2 inch and i always get warping. Is this a technique for thicker wood only? love what your doing, Merica!
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joshua, I don't really use this technique on anything less than 3/4" thick. It's too hard to control the outcome. Normally I spray in between passes with the torch. If you warp, try burning the backside of the wood. Cheers

Super cooooo. Lol what type of nail size did you use when fasting it together when clamped? I don’t have a gun do you think with hammer I could achieve that or do I just bite the bullet and buy one

Thanks, Adam! My vote is always for BUY THE NEW SHINY TOOL!! LOL But honestly those are just 1 1/4 brad nails. You could totally do it with a hammer and nails. Cheers!
