How to build a center console for your car or truck (Hidden Subwoofers)

In this series of video we show you how to take a blank space in a truck and fill it with bass and not a junky console, but one with good quality taste that much the vehicle. We vinyl wrap and load it with 2 12 inch american bass subwoofers.

Instead of going through all that trouble with the router for the tubes, industrial pvc works just as good, then cover it with glass and resin, to match the wood color.

I use a 1/8th inch that way you have 1/16th for each vinyl color. That is the rule of thumb, 1/16th per layer of vinyl.

Did u put it right where the 2 pieces connect? I built a console but i dont know how wrap the vinyl. I dont have any cavities to conceal the vinyl on the front and sides. This is my first time building anything.

I actually was able to get it to roll down and stretch around. I painted the bottom inside white so it was not that visible.

You could put a small rabit cut with a router on the pieces and it will give you an area to tuck your vinyl between the 2 but not create an air gap.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if this is what the customer wanted, "it is what it is." It looks a little heavy to me, but I've been in that kid's shoes before, lol. I just want something bulletproof, all that fiberglass is cute but it has some flex in it, the finish can scratch, and it was just never my style. So I agree with the kid. I like fiberglass too, but it's not for me. Just my 2 cents. Great job in giving a customer what they want.

Thanks for an honest opinion but also seeing it as what it is. I do alot of different consoles. This was more a sub box that fit in a console spot and served a little function. Ill eventually get back to uploading and showing people we do alot more than just a box in a console space.

I used to work for my parents and summers for an uncle of mine and I learned that personal preference plays a very small role in any real business. You really need to give a customer what they want and I'm sure that this kid is going to have a lot of happy memories attached to this sub box. When you think about it that way it was a great thing that you did, you made your money, you made a kid happy, and you taught us a little something about custom box fabrication. Good work man. But, my customers would never let me get away with screws showing on the plexi like that. Just looks unfinished.

I'm confused as to why the Plexi doesn't sit flush or at least 45'd so it blends into the panel better. I would've 45'd it and then flame polished the edges.

The customer supplied the plexi glass in this case and it was 1 inch thick so we were talking and I said I could put a smoke bevel edge on it so it would capture light. Really just comes down to talking with the customer and bouncing some ideas back and forth until all parties are happy then my job is to perform that task. May have been different if it was a differnt customer. The problem with polishing plexi is it doesnt allow the light to capture as it comes through. At night that bevel edge lights up from the interior lights in the box.

The customer supplied the 1 inch acrylic and if you saw what he wanted you really would have been disappointed. I put the beveled edge on it just to give it some type of detail to grab light.

This had 1 inch plexi glass windows, paint, vinyl , as thick as 3 layers of wood + led lighting and kerfing, self cost would be in the neighborhood of 200 to 250. To have a shop do this for you, I would expect you to be in the area of 400 to 1000.00 There is always that 1 shop that will do it so cheap that its not worth their time, then there are shops that value their time. Hope those price ranges give you an idea no matter how you approach it.

i know the subs are powerful, but seeing as you ported the box, intetnal air pressure is lowered, ergo you could have saved money and gotten away with 1/2" acrylic for windows that small, large windows 3/4----to 1" all day but that small 1" is gratuitous overkill. Otherwise GREAT BUILD

Thanks man, As for the acrylic I did not supply that, the customer brought it to me and wanted to build around it, so to make up for the 1 inch vs our 3/4 wood we gave it that bevel to match the same height, I totally agree for a small window it was overkill but it was not a choice we got to make, Still in person it looked great as a final product because the bevel edge. At 17:30 you will notice his dash has a flip down console holding his cups. His whole idea was based around him being able to still use that cup holder built into his truck. With that said it is a good idea to generally consider cup holders and such when your designing these type of boxes.

Consoles like this can range anywhere from 200 up to 1500 USD. Things that will vary that price are size, material finish, inserts such as the plexiglass and material build choice such as fiberglass vs wood, and if its wood the curves can add up, and also the area you are in will decide where that price ends up. For all that went in to this and the size of it, the triple layer face for subwoofers and countersinking , and material choice in our area a box like this would cost a person in the 5 to 800.00 range. Thanks, we have one almost out of the shop that is 6 1/2 inch subwoofers built a bit more around real music sound, it will do the heavy bass but is not being built for that.
