I am really late to the party but I wanted to say thanks for this video. I don't want to give BRI any of my money if at all possible after the way they treated him while he was ill and dying, and how they screwed his son Steve out of any inheritance to Bob's legacy. So I really appreciate it when you offer alternative brands that will still get the job done.

Hey- For the liquid white, you can use linseed oil(or any other oil) and titanium white (if you’re just starting). That’s what I use and it works perfectly. For a palate, you use a piece of plastic or glass. If you don’t want thinner, you can use gamsol.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
All those are great suggestions, but I would still recommend newbies buy LW. While making your own LW may be a tiny bit cheaper, it also means the new painter would have craft the correct viscosity ( which would be tough because they have nothing to compare it too). Gamsol is a super duper great product... but cost more money. I would recommend that product for someone how knows they like to paint or plans on sticking with it.

How can you use acrylic gesso on a canvas then oil paint over it, as you mentioned?

Its actually very simple and straight forward - you just apply gesso, let it dry (completely) then add your oil paint on top. If you need more info I have a few older videos on it below: - How To Gesso: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGLOlZdjqq17oJY - Why Gesso: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omK1hZl5e6akidk

These are great tips. I got BR 2inch, 1 inch, a round, fan . Had a old easle from a set I bought a while ago. Got some liquid white, cheap paint set and individual Winston blah blah paints in 4 different colors. I bought a big tube of the w&n titanium white. Paint thinner...but the cheap acrylic palette really pissed me off. My knives get messy, not like Bob... Other than that...I made a nice little painting the other day. I'm sure I'm at least 200$ in and it's acceptable quality. Same cheap canvases and gesso too. Paper towels is what I got excited by. Get brawny. But the towel thing is even better, though I'd be wary about throwing a towel laden with oil paints into my washer. That's just me being neurotic maybe, maybe not idk.

I am glad that my videos are helping you out on your creative adventures. I use junk towels all the time that I get from goodwill... after washing them of course. But once they have oil paint on them I never wash them again ( at least not in the washer ) If you are looking for the best paper towels while painting... take a look at this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKuxamSKlslkg5Y

You could also apply the protective guards to the sides of the glass… I’m talking about the thin molding that goes on the outer edges of the car doors as bump/chip guard and comes in a roll at any auto parts store. Some come with double sided tape and cheap ones do not so you’ll want to be able to remove them to wash pallet.

I would highly recommend Jackson’s Art in the UK for Bob Ross supplies. I pieced together my set of Bob Ross brushes and got Jackson’s brand artist grade paint for around $100 Canadian. Pretty good for 4 brushes and 8 artist grade paints. Also if you have some woodworking tools you can make your own canvases and easel. I can make 30 16x20 canvases for $65 CDN. That includes wood canvas and gesso. Hope that helps.

I suppose the chip brushes shed quite a bit? Would you recommend cleaning them and crimping the metal parts tighter like you recommended on the updated BR Master set brushes?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
100% (Says with a straight face ) Beat the brushes off very good before using them for anything. This will get most of the lose hairs out. Then you can crimp them tighter (if you want). This will help a ton. But still be aware the hairs in chip brushes are prone to snap. Since they are more brittle. Hope that helps

There is a good chance you might not be using enough paint. We've all been there, myself included; you squirt out the smallest amount of paint possible on your palette, because you don't want to waste paint. My bushes and such never applied correctly until I made sure I had an adequate amount of paint. If you are worried about wasting paint, I have a solution. Go and get yourself a little tupperware container and tape a cotton pad (one of those little round ones used for taking off make up) to the top of the container. Then get your self a small bottle of clove oil and put a few drops into the cotton when you are storing your paint. Put your paint on a piece of wax paper and put it in the container and seal up tight. Your paint paint won't dry out and you can use it weeks, even months, later.

So a question ... it looked like the canvas 'package' you chose had five canvases, is that accurate? If that's the case, how long (in paintings) do the paint tubes usually last? Some of these supplies seem like a one and done deal (like the easel, at least if you get one somewhat quality), while obviously paints (and to a lesser extent, probably brushes) are only going to last so long. I have no idea if I would enjoy painting, but Bob's "anyone can do it" style gives me the urge to at least try it. I figure if it isn't too expensive, I might try and watch an episode a week, and paint along with it, and try that for at least five or ten weeks to be able to really get an idea of whether I actually like it or not ... so I'm interested in having some idea of how long those supplies will last, and how quickly they'll need to be replaced, to get through that first testing period. (I hope that number of paintings can let me get enough of a hang up it to actually start producing decent looking stuff!) Thoughts?
@WildCreates
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
OK best & honest answer I can give is: 1) It takes about 5 to 10 paintings to see if you like it. Some are addicted after a single painting BUT most I would say it takes about 5 to 10 paintings. 2) Buy the BR master kit, 1 extra tube of WN titanium white, 1 table top easel, cheap 11x14 or 12x16 canvas pack and thinner. That will be enough... FOR NOW. Other supplies just use junk towels for cleaning and junk buckets/Tupperware for thinner and other cheap supplies I mention in the video. 3) The supplies from #2 will for sure get your through 5 BR paintings Maybe 8 to 10 if you paint with not many layers and don't waste paint. 4) To minimize wasting paint... paint 2 BR paintings back to back. You will learn twice as much and save on paint and cleaning time. 5) Your first painting will SUCK!!! The second will suck BUT it will suck less. The third will actually look like something BUT suck! The fourth will be an, "OH crap" moment and have a decent painting that looks like 50% crap. Painting number 5 is where it all clicks and you have a decent painting your are some what proud of AND it makes you want to paint anther. After you do 5 to 10 painting. HIt me back and let me know what you think. I honestly would love to know your thoughts. Also hit that sub button - this awesome answer desevers some love and a sub 😁

@@WildCreates Yes, yes it does. Honestly, I have no idea if it will work out, getting to the point of trying this. At the moment, I have no money for buying any supplies ... but if the passengers are there for me for the next couple of months, I can get caught up, and manage the funds to give it a try, knowing that the first bunch of supplies will last long enough for me to get some idea of if I can make this work. I watched two of Bob's shows yesterday, and one today, and it really is amazing how easy he makes it look. And thank you for mentioning at least 5 paintings to start to get anywhere, because that is something I needed to hear, to not give up after the first one, or maybe the first two. If I invest the money, I can at least commit to 5-10, and believe it or not, I was already planning to do each show twice, painting along. I don't know, I have never really had much interest in painting, at least that I can remember, but watching those videos just makes me think "Heck yeah, I want to do this!" Have subscribed, and will let you know when I get started! Thank you for answering!

Hello there Tasha, That will work as long as you don't waste too much paint ha ha ha. The only issue you may have is having enough titanium white. You use it for literally everything; clouds, snow, highlights, ETC ( so it goes quickly ). Not sure how many people will be at the party, but if its a decent number. ACRYLIC PAINTS vs OIL PAINTS: Well there’s more topic related videos on mediums when your talking about acrylic paints! There’s extra thick for building textures and realistic visual effects, then there’s a Gel that’s more workable thick like tooth paste and dries slower than the thick one and dries slower than acrylic paint itself. Then there’s fluid medium instead of Gel medium, the difference is it’s liquidy and has a nice flow to it. You also have options as to a matte finish or glossy and these are all clear when they dry. NOW… alllll these mediums are meant to be added into the acrylic paint. It will give the acrylic paint a very identical characteristic and performance of oil paints. The mediums are called mediums bcs it creates a workable surface to paint on. A medium can be referred to as a substrate (surface) or an (in between) substance.. kind of like a person who is a medium bcs they are a means to connect the real world to the supernatural world, just like the paint mediums connect the paint to the canvas. If you try to use plain acrylic paint directly onto an also “plain” canvas, the canvas will be “too dry” for the paint and it will dry as its coming off the brush. Even on a gesso prepped canvas which gives it the white finish texture we all know, the paint will not come off the brush and transfer onto the canvas well at all and you won’t be able to achieve any of your techniques without using an excessive amount of paint in order to compensate for the canvas not being coated with liquid white paint (with medium mixed into it) and also your colors not having medium mixed into them either. The most important part of the medium is that not only does it dry slowly, BUT it will reach a very specific level of dryness and it will STAY in that perfect window of 50% dry!…. It makes the acrylic paint act like a verrrry fine thin paste that blends AMAZINGLY!! It allows you to apply different amounts of pressure to your paint brush and it will either blend like your Picasso or with less pressure it will create a “dry wash” finish effect and show the texture of the canvas without whipping off the paint! If your paints to NOT have either a Gel Matt medium or fluid matte medium mixed into them, your paint will come off the canvas and you’ll see the white canvas exposed when you try to blend layers of colors together or pancaked in layers. It’s bcs acrylic paint by itself dries too fast and becomes unworkable, and when you apply pressure or water to work the paint, it’ll wash off. Mediums create a web like connective tissues between the canvas and the acrylic colors. OIL PAINTS: do not use mediums like acrylic require…. Oil paints only require some organic oil to be added to the oil paint bcs it’s a very thick paste by itself and cannot be used straight out the tube. Oil choices/options are minimal and the only thing that can be alerted is the choice of oil added to the oil paint which determines the dry time (fast dry) or (slow dry)… the only thing oil and acrylic share in common is the canvas lol. And alllllll canvas are prepped using the same Gesso which comes in black or white. This is NOT like the mediums from earlier, instead the gesso dries hard with a sandy grit feel to it. This will need to be sanded with like 180-320 grit and re applied then sanded again and it’s up to you how much of that sandy grit you want on the canvas. There needs to be some texture on the canvas bcs it helps pull off paint from the brush and grab onto the canvas. Oil paint stays wet for soooo long, you have alllll the time in the world to make corrections and plan out your art. Where acrylic paint WANTS to dry fast but artists are always struggling to prevent that.. there’s even a dry retarder you can add a few drops into the acrylic paint to help it stay wet longer. It’s been 11 months for you since this question but was that helpful? It’s almost everything you need to know.

Hey Wild, you try water based oils for bob ross paintings? I'm using Lukas Berlin they seem good. Clean up is soooo much better with then too. Also great 👍 your vids got me into paitning. Just wish this this was made 5 months ago to save me lots of cash.😅

Yes I have and I recommend then if you are sensitive to oils or have issues with vapors from thinners. Then work great overall. I have some and plan on doing a video on them. Just need more time to plan it out and shoot it is all 😜 I am glad that I can help you on a new creative adventure - I will be sure to make some more awesome vids to help you on your journey.

Is there a reason to choose Windsor and Newton paints over Bob Ross paints? At the moment, 37ml tubes of Bob Ross paints are $5.45 from DickBlick.com, or $5.19 from JerrysArtArama.com. The 37ml Windsor and Newton Winton paints you say are $6.00 a tube are as low as $3.66 for some colors on DickBlick.com. The lowest priced colors are regularly $4.17 from JerrysArtArama.com, currently on sale for $3.49.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 3 жыл бұрын
The main reason is price. But both brands work well. All the prices are in the video are just based on the average retail price. It’s hard to account with fluctuating sale prices. All the brands at those prices are steals. Gobble them up when you can. If you are into super deals every now and then. Normally during the week and in store only. Micheals will have some of there 37ml tubes for only like 2 or 3 dollars. Good deal if you can snag it.

@@WildCreates I don't know how often those paints are available at those prices. I might have just gotten lucky and been browsing those sites at just the right time. I was browsing those sites recently comparing prices for canvas yardage and stretcher bars and happened to think of checking their prices for various Bob Ross supplies/tools. If I actually get started and get hooked on Bob Ross style painting I'm going to have to learn to stretch my on canvases. That's much more cost effective than buying pre-stretched canvases. I've watched Bob Ross since I was a kid, and have wanted to try his method for years. I've been hesitant to try it as I often suspect that I have somewhat less artistic talent than a turnip. :-) I did learn to paint ceramics a few decades ago, but haven't painted in years. I bought a Bob Ross master set quite a while back. I think that may be the same set in the reddish box on the left hand side of the book case behind you. KZbin keeps trying to help me find more hobbies than I could possibly have time for, so I tend to cycle through them. I got sidetracked on another hobby before I got started with the set. I finally cycled back to it and am just about ready to finally put brush to canvas.

The nice thing about the BR wet on wet tech.... its easy to get into. Within just a few paintings things start to click and a cloud looks like a cloud and a mountain looks like a mountain. Its very rewarding even if you have turnip talent 😜 If you have the kit give it a go - you got nothing to lose.... only to gain :)

@@WildCreates I got started this past weekend. I made some typical beginner mud mixer mistakes. I learned a magic trick. I an make clouds disappear into the sky. :-) I gave up on the first canvas with disappearing clouds. I'm pretty sure I used too much liquid white. I think the second canvas passed the fingerprint test, but I still had disappearing clouds. Could that also result from too much sky color? After a couple of tries I ended up with a completely flat sky with a couple of shapes kind of resembling clouds and the beginning of something kind of resembling a mountain. By that point I was tired of fighting with some of the sub-optimal supplies I had bought. I left it at that point and started the cleanup. I discovered the non-Bob Ross acrylic palettes and brush cleaning jar/screen I bought are way too small. A Bob Ross cleaning bucket and screen has been ordered, along with a few other additional supplies. Dick Blick has free shipping on orders over $45, and the price on some of the Bob Ross colors I didn't already have were too tempting. The preparation of my wooden palette that's a tad larger than Bob's acrylic palette is under way. I'll be putting a third coat of boiled linseed oil on it tonight. Though not a great start, I think I have an idea on where I went wrong, and what details I need to pay more attention to when I rewatch some videos on the basics.

@@WildCreates Oh, I have been watching all of your videos little by little, I think I've found what the issue is (although I haven't tested yet): way, way, WAY too much paint in the sky and especially the mountains. One time I also forgot to scrape the paint thoroughly, and even forgot to drag the excess paint down the mountain. So all that caused a whole lot of contamination on the titanium white on the knife, and there wasn't rough canvas for the paint breaks to happen from all the excess paint. Got myself some shop paper for that. I also put together wooden backing for taping pages of canvas pad for practice, another one of your ideas. I'm planning to test everything soon, when I have time. 😉 I also found your cardboard hack for oily paints,so I think I can manage with what I have, I'll likely later exchange them to Gamblin 1980 when they run out. ;) Once again, I want to say that your videos are super helpful and very useful: thank you! 😊
