Something you didn't mention while covering screw heads and nails, nails don't always sit flush no matter how straight you have hammered them in. It could be worth using a hammer and centre punch to knock the nail head in a little, similar to the natural slight counter syncing that screwing in a screw will give. Then go over with wood filler etc. Will just make it that little bit more polished at the end.
@satibel
@satibel 5 жыл бұрын
if you have a router that you can hold in place, making a flat countersink for the nails is an option. just sanding the nail down if the head is thick can work too.

brian dowling Lukesaps Top Tip - ensure to do this whilst the partner is at work to avoid being told off. Works even better when the partner is a complete mug as she will just end up hovering up when she gets home from work anyway! Also use the best house knife to burn the polystyrene....works a treat if you want to go that bit further in pissing off said partner!

If you use 12mm MDF, a full sheet of 2.4m x 1.2m only weighs about 25kg. It wont bow, cup or warp (plywood is terrible for bowing and cupping) and you wont need to add support rails and all that extra foam. You could build up the terrain straight on top and cap the edges with super lightweight 3mm MDF and glue it to the 12mm and the foam. It will be solid yet light (at my job, we make a lot of cabinetry/store fittings using just 12mm MDF and PVA Glue and it works a treat).

while I do think that the final product is gorgeous, it is infact pretty impractical and not very flexible in use.. why not get a really good table and work with modular big tiles... make it so that certain shapes ( hill angles etc.) are exactly the same so that you can change out parts of the terrain, recomposition the scenery for new games etc. etc. and best of all it could be stored in a shelf-system next to the table and save a lot of space while the table can be used for everything from dinner, giving support to all the glorious mead pitchers up to playing other games like mtg ...

Small question; why put the MDF on the bottom and then fill the area between the boards with foam? Wouldn't it save you some foam to flip it over and build on top of the MDF with the reinforcing boards underneath? I figured the wood gives a nice edge but if you put the plywood over the edges anyway seems like waste... maybe I'm missing something though...

@@GeekGamingScenics Ah makes sense. I would like to do this for a river board, but I'm running into two issues: one, the board cutting through the river (and I could carve it out but then there goes the strength of the board) and the fact that it's very hard to find wood and XPS foam in the same measurements in NL haha. Always 18mm board, 20mm foam, or 44mm board, 30mm foam. But thanks for clarifying!

"Flush as a daisy"? Not, "Flush as a toilet"? Are those little nails, "Panel Pins"? Can you do a tutorial on how to get the expanding foam out of the can? I've tried several time, and never seem to be able to much if anything out. That is a great looking table; you should be justly proud.

Lukes Aps thank you very much Luke for the quick answer! I am so glad the sells are going well, looking forward to get a bunch of your foam flocks once the change in the production line got settled. PS if you start selling the soil+grout mix, that is another thing I’d be eager to buy from you!
