Awesome video. The only problem I have is you should never wear gloves while using any type of power saw. Basic saw safety. Other than that great job and I'm on my way to go make one.

Thanks Tom. Yes, very good point. At the time, I forgot to take my gloves off in between sanding and using the saw, and that's obviously not good. This comment was also made in my Reddit post, and I appreciate anyone that brings up safety concerns. I'll put a note in the video description mentioning it.

It is refreshing to see a woodworking video with detailed diagrams and an appreciation of science. Well done; I'm looking forward to more videos.

Thanks for the video, I recently made a bunch of single bottle holders and now plan to make some doubles! but if i may offer some constructive woodworking criticism. Maybe cut the miter from the other side of the miter saw as the blade can get pretty close to your hand. also, maybe pick up a new hole saw (or even better, a forstner bit) as it seems quite dull, judging by all the burns in the wood.

@@JoshTheEngineer sadly its the absolute WRONG way to do it ... better off to store the bottle with support near the base and the neck ... by doing just the neck you eventually stress the neck too much and it falls off breaking the rest of the bottle and costing you the wine in the bottle ... this is why Vintners Store bottles on their sides and supported fully or about an inch in from the base and just past the neck to bottle flare ... . the build looks nice but is USELESS.

Great work on the software Josh! Another awesome video! However, the parameters of the second bottle in the GUI can not be changed. I cannot sellect a different wine, and also I cannot input custom measurments. Would you have any ideas, why is that? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! What version of MATLAB are you using? Also, are the options just missing, or are they not there, but not editable? If they're missing, it's because the panels that they're in (the blue outline areas) are on top of those options. This happens sometimes when using my code that I wrote in v2013 in newer MATLAB versions. To fix it, you can go into the FIG file, open it in GUIDE, right-click every panel, and press "Send to Back". Then save the FIG file and try to run it again. If that's not the issue, then I'll have to go back and look at my code.

@@JoshTheEngineer Josh, thanks for your reply! I use the 2018 version of matlab, the modification to the code that you are suggesting I have already applied. At 58 second of the video you show that you can chose from different types of wines for the bottom bottle. When you select say Bordeaux the data under the drop down menu changes,also when you select custom in the drop down menu you the boxes become yellow and you can input custom numbers. My problem is that when I try to switch from Bordeaux to burgundy for the Top bottle the fields under the drop down menu does not change, the numbers remain the same! Also when I select the custom option for the top bottle, from the drop down menu the boxes are not painted yellow so I cannot enter custom numbers. Happy holidays!

Hi I am measuring a bottle to input into your excel tool. But what does "CG from Base" mean? What is that measuring?
@JoshTheEngineer7 жыл бұрын
If you lie the bottle down flat on a table, it's the location of the center of gravity of the horizontal bottle from the base of the bottle. I have a video showing you how to find this for your specific bottle: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX2rooydmZ2hoJY

Thank you so much your video is really good, I have a question why some of the holes have angles and the yours looks straight?

Thank you! My holes are straight because it's easier to drill and I don't think angled holes necessarily look any better.

And other question how you can build a board with a bottle 1.5 liters?
@JoshTheEngineer5 жыл бұрын
You can use my codes on my GitHub to do this, but you have to make sure to change the wine bottle dimensions so it matches your bottle dimensions.
@0623kaboom4 жыл бұрын
answer DONT ... it will eventually break the neck off the bottle .. ALWAYS store it on its side if it has a cork ... and always support in 2 places minimum ... NEVER store by cantilevering it by the neck

Las dimensiones se muestran a las 4:22. El ángulo del corte es de 45 grados. Los diámetros de los agujeros son de 1,5 pulgadas.

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered but does the holder function irrespective of the volume of wine remaining in the bottle? Great Idea by the way and your video was clear and easy to follow.
@JoshTheEngineer8 жыл бұрын
This double-bottle holder won't always function when the bottles aren't full. My single-bottle holder does always work regardless of how much wine is in the bottle, as I show in the following video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poe0p4SLdtiqbtk I'm planning on making a similar video showing the stability limits for the double-bottle holder, I just need to finish another bottle of wine with a screw-top before I can do that. The double-bottle design will probably still work if you drink similar amounts in both the top and bottom bottle, but until I test it out, I can't tell you for sure. Good question though!
@0623kaboom4 жыл бұрын
it would hold as long as the base is not heavier than the stress the glass of the neck of the bottle can handle .. this bottle holder is actually CRAP because it does NOT support the bottle from a minimum of 2 spots and puts the maximum strain on the weakest part of the bottle ... the neck ... look at a vintners storage ... they always store the bottles on their side and never suspended by the neck .
@Alan-m6g10 ай бұрын
Instead of taking the hole saw apart every time you drill a hole use a nail or an all to put in the hole on your hole saw and pry the piece out!
@0623kaboom4 жыл бұрын
one problem with hanging a full bottle by the neck alone ... is it will break the neck off the bottle .. ALWAYS support a full bottle from a side ... back and front ... the liquid will keep the cork damp and tight and the bottle doesnt break ... sadly although this build looks good it will cost you more in the booze that sits in it than the materials to build this are worth . Been there done that ... never again ... I learned the first time . also never store wine and such standing up as the cork dries it shrinks and then the wine becomes vinegar or ferments even more and explodes ... ALWAYS store corked bottles on their side ... this is why vintners have diamond storage racks that hold bottles on their sides and never more than than 5 layers deep ...because gravity will eventually crush the bottles and again waste the contents
@JoshTheEngineer4 жыл бұрын
I don't think I ever claimed that this was a good way to store your wine bottles indefinitely. This is just an interesting way to hold the bottle the night that you'll be drinking it, for instance. If the wine bottle neck breaks that easily though, I would question the structural integrity of the wine bottle.

Man you americans need to learn metric!
@JoshTheEngineer8 жыл бұрын
I know this is probably just a lighthearted comment, but as an engineer, you need to be able to work in any unit system. That's just a reality of a world in which multiple systems exist and are still in use. I happen to like the SI system best, but if I couldn't convert between systems quickly and accurately, I wouldn't be much of an engineer. Just because people don't use metric for everything doesn't mean they don't understand it. Again, I know it was just a lighthearted quip, but I figured I would explain my reasons for using the English system every now and then!

You sure know how to complicate a simple 10 year old starter project. You could round off any of those minute dimensions of yours to the next quarter of an inch it wouldn’t matter a bit.
@JoshTheEngineer5 жыл бұрын
For thick pieces of wood I would agree, but as the wood thickness gets smaller and smaller, it does matter.

@0623kaboom4 жыл бұрын
I laughed my ass off as soon as I saw it ... it will cost you more in replacing broken bottles than the build is worth ... heck make a basic box turn it 45degress add a support to keep it that way and load the interior with bottles on their side ... better storage, safer and you DONT dry out the cork ... takes less time less calculations and less trouble and ends up costing less overall.
