This is almost a perfect built for DWC, would add some aeration to the system + allowing yourself to drain the buckets in place vs moving anything. I don’t see how you can empty those weekly. If the drains were on the bottom but added shut off valves to each drain you can run it as a DWC system and turn your drainage system into a weekly used thing when you cycle the water out. Deff appreciated the video and ideas to go off of!

To save confusion, black PVC pipe does not technically exist. It is black because it is ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) pipe. It doesn't appear to be an issue with your build but just know that the two (PVC & ABS) cannot be joined together with the pipe cement that you recommend in your product list or with other cement. The two are mutually exclusive and PVC is typically used to feed a system where ABS is most often used for the waste side. BTW, awesome build and I loved the attention to the little things like thinking ahead and foreseeing issues and dealing with them beforehand.

Nice Job! I wanted to keep my water levels higher, but most growers don't subscribe to that method. Hopefully, you will have great luck with it. Great thinking on anticipating issues later. Instead of perlite, it will be fertilized solution with root microbes to increase uptake of nutrients. The idea being to get production earlier to have a longer growing season. We get too much heat here in Kansas City, so mine will need to be an enclosed building for controlled climate. The section requiring bees for pollination will be screened in.

You are gonna have to figure out how to keep the solution cool. It will heat up and kill your plants. Some people bury the reservoir to do it. You could also implement a float valve to keep the level full automatically. Another geeky idea for redundancy would be to use a TEE and another pump. Good build, great instructional video!

I love that setup. Is that the Harbor Freight greenhouse? One correction though. You can't simply convert a deep water dutch bucket to a shallow water one just by adding an extension pipe down inside. The water level will still rise until it gets to the level of the hole. You CAN convert a shallow level bucket to a deep water like you said, because the water will need to rise to the height of the new pipe inside. I think that's the way I'll go because it opens more options. I think those grommets are pretty leak proof once seated properly. Looking great so far though.

yes that is what I was thinking also last year I made a MHP style system with 4 gal cat liter buckets this year I want to make another 10 bucket system ,but after taking all yea to collect 10 more buckets I don't want to drill the drain holes up high only to find out later it doesn't work for me , I think I rather drill the holes the same height , about 2" up from the bottom and upturn the inside elbow add another piece of PVC inside to the desired height, I have seen people use another elbow at the top of the drain pile but I don't think it is needed ,or maybe it is to help prevent roots from growing down in there I also do not want to use any air stones I was wondering if there are some nozzles that can attach to the end of the 1/4 tubing that will make a thin higher pressure stream to shoot into the water to make it aerate better not sure if it would work or if it would been too much restriction for the pump though

I would like to see a full fill and drain cycle, i suspect this thing overflows a lot. I hate to be critical because i know a lot of thought, planning and cash went into this build, its a pretty clean build and this type of hybrid system is a great concept that does have several workable design solutions. However, i suspect there were some operational issues with this design, and that might be why we didn't see the thing actually drain all those buckets, or anything successfully growing in there. Putting the drains so high in the bucket is generally a mistake for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that u siphons like to trap air that blocks outflow if there is not enough water pressure to push the bubble out. Especially u siphons with longer horizontal runs like these. With the drain so high there is very little pressure on that outlet to dislodge any trapped air, or trigger the siphons for that matter. I suspect this thing doesn't drain the buckets well and they may even overflow when air gets trapped in those siphon pipes. Traditional dutch bucket drains end up with more water pressure to drive the siphon effect and drain the bucket because they are placed lower on the bucket and the water level they are draining from is typically always going to be higher than the drain outlet itself. The water level usually always goes higher than the outlet before it begins to actually drain, which is why i suspect this overflows. If im wrong hey, good on ya, but honestly, not seeing this thing in action seems telling.

8:00 I don't think he plans on siphon draining his buckets. He made the comment that you could add an extension tube on the elbow and drain all the way down, but he eludes to wanting to do a deep water culture. You are correct though if all the buckets were set up to do flood and drain, their timing would eventually overlap and they would overrun his reservoir. I hadn't thought about the air trapped on long horizontal runs requiring higher water pressure to start the siphon. I wonder, if I use his system but move the buckets close as possible to the drain pipe, say the horizontal run was just about 1" long plus the two elbows and I use an extension tube inside the bucket to drain it all the way down to say 1", would a flood and drain siphon reliably work at the height he used? Obviously I would need a 60 gallon or more reservoir.

Here's a list of all the problems I see: 1. There is no cooling for the nutrients. DWC requires nutrients to stay below 21°C to be able to hold enough dissolved oxygen for healthy roots. 2. Where is the air pumps? Any large plants that need well drained soil also require a lot of dissolved oxygen in the nutrients. 3.There is no way to do a reservoir change without emptying out each bucket individually and refilling them while the system is off. 4.The drain height should be set so that the water stays a couple inches below the net pot at max height. 5. The drain design has no way to prevent roots from growing into the pipes and blocking them. 6. The pond pump shouldn't be inside the reservoir because it produces heat. 7. No convenient location to test the EC and pH. Having to open a reservoir every time is quite annoying, and takes time. 8.The reservoir is too small, and should be located outside the greenhouse, or in the ground. Since I'm not an ass, here's how to fix the issues: 1. Put the buckets on the ground, as the heat will be absorbed. A chiller of some kind will probably be needed. 2. Install air pumps, with an air stone in each pail. 3-5. Set the max height 2-3" below the net pots. Run the drain tube all the way to the bottom. Insert the fill line into the drain so that it fills through the drain, pushing out roots. Then you drill a hole on the outside and put in a small barbed 90° fitting with a air line on it to create and air break. This air break stops the syphon when the water inside the bucket reaches the height of the hole outside the bucket. All you have to do is fold over the airline and pinch with clothes pin, and it will drain syphon all the way down to the bottom, allowing you to empty out the whole system. 6. If you remove the grill off most pond pumps, they have a threaded inlet to add a barbed connection and relocate the pump outside of the nutrients. Eliminates heating the reservoir with the pump. 7. Adding a small cup that fills from an extra irrigation line and drains once filled an inch, allows you to test the nutrients without having to open anything up. Add a cap to keep the bugs out. 8. I size my reservoir to be large enough that I can vacation for 7 days without maintenance. The minimum size should be enough to compensate for nutrient use between additions, plus enough space for all buckets to be filled to the overflow point, and extra water to keep the pump from running dry. Using a sump pump float to shut down your pump and prevent it from burning out is a good idea too.

On our sailboat, we have two 245 watt- 24v solar panels, an MPPT controller that knocks it down to 12 volt and routes to battery bank. I don't usually use the inverter, but we can if necessary. If you're just running a pump and aerator and some LED's (As far as a green house similar to the one in this video) you won't need much. The pump isn't running continuously, at least from what I've researched from other homesteaders. Use an on line watt hour calculator and make sure you have enough storage (battery). Do your homework with the batteries and use good wire, not worth cheaping out on the batteries and wiring.
