I feel that once you have a knife and you know how to create a fire, your chances at survival go up significantly. I know that for me it changed the game from dying over and over to food no longer being an issue since chickens are everywhere

Small rocks that you pick up on trails can be broken on bigger rocks that you see in the woods to make a small knife which allows you to do a lot of this from scratch

This is probably super late, but a bonus tip, if you find a shed with a dirt floor you can usually place a fire inside there, and the roof will block all of the smoke
