Older 4-core CPU's actually hold up quite well for gaming purposes, with the right combos and overclocks and so on. Recently built a desktop gaming setup for my 8yo daughter with my old FX-8150, put a 4.7Ghz OC to it ( with brigde and ram tuning etc.)paired with 16Gb of corsair vengeance ram, and a RX580, and it does warzone 60-100fps medium settings 1080p, fortnite peaks at 270fps, avg 180-190fps with comp settings.The other games i tested is locked to 60fps because.. 8yo kidsgames ... With my 3800XT in my main rig i get 140-150fps average in warzone with cpu bottleneck, and fortnite i get 320fps average at 1080p.320 and 180 is far apart, but it does not mean that 180 is useless, it is a joy to play with :)

Not incredibly different, but big enough that I'd say you REALLY need to find a good deal if you're investing in a DDR3 system in 2021 at this point.

I was able to snag this whole build for exactly 450 (after state tax)! It was all 413 before taxes, lol. It takes some sniping, and people gotta keep in mind that you can run for slightly cheaper case/fans/cooler, even RAM if you feel swiggy.

I'm currently making a build for my uncle which I was originally planning to give him my i5 4690k/z97 board and DDR3 but decided to go i7 for a bit more longevity with 4c/8t. I got an i7 5775c for $98 from aliexpress a few weeks ago as the i7 4790k was roughly $125. Cool thing about this chip is the onboard graphics is Iris Pro 6200 (with its 128mb L4 cache) so it will suffice without a GPU during the current market. Once a dedicated GPU is installed the 128 L4 cache will actually boost the cpu performance hugely in cache latency benefitting some cpu intensive games/applications. Stock clocks were only 3.3ghz/3.6ghz turbo and it overclocks to 4.0-4.2 which isn't great... But its built on 14nm and is very efficient so all in all a nice chip for the price if you have z97/ddr3 parts to spare. 5775c at 4.2ghz it matches or betters the 4790k at 4.8ghz in gaming performance but loses out slightly in benchmarks or general use. I'm considering a delid and applying liquid metal to run it at 4.2ghz without reaching 80+ celcius under stress but not sure if its worth the effort. All in all it gives my old hardware a second life while I'm upgrading to a 10600k.
