How to Build a Longbow from a Blank - Part One

Join master bowyer Jim Belcher as he demonstrates how to put the finishing touches on a laminated long bow blank from 3Rivers Archery. These longbow blanks are cheap and an easy way to begin your journey as a bow builder. All the hard work is already done - they come pre-tillered and at your desired draw weight. The blank being worked on in this video comes to approximately 66" AMO bow length.

Out of curiosity, I'm about to get this blank from 3RA and have looked at all 4 of these videos but still am curious as to shelf placement.... The 17" risers are supposed to have a "grip area" of 6.5". which means (in video 1) Jim cuts the shelf in ~3.25" above center. Wouldn't it be better to cut as close to center of the riser as possible while still allowing room for ample grip ? Say 1" to 1-1/2" above center ? Or is there a reason to cut it so high ? ie shooting style like 3 fingers under , 2 fingers etc ? Any explanations would be most appreciated.. Thanks

We would not recommend it for that long of a draw length. You would want a bow a couple inches longer in length.

The bow is still in use today. The solid riser and fiberglass backing offer great strength and the shelf can be cut that deep without worry.

ryan kerr I'm not sure what you're talking about. The video was uploaded in HD. You can adjust the quality of your playback using KZbin's setting controls. Your default setting might be for lower quality. But you can adjust it all the way up to 1080p HD.

3RiversArchery I'm aware of this most common of features but the colours still appear washed out and a mic on the Bowyer would be nice so that we don't have to manually turn the volume all the way up to hear him speak then turn it way back when the music begins to play. Good content though, love to see more
