You know, as a pretty awesome upgrade, after carving the crystal, if you carve it and then cast it in resin. The end result would be on the next level there. Perhaps also using a woodburning tool or dremel to add runes and sigils to the wooden parts as well....possibly embedding a LED in the crystal as well...
@cwlbuilds
@cwlbuilds 5 жыл бұрын
that would be super cool i like the idea of adding runes to the staff. A resin cast crystal would be really cool but also expensive, If this was for a movie or a prop that I was using more often I would totally have made a mold of it and done a clear slush cast.

Its mostly a cost thing. Id have to buy a large amount of silicon and a large amount of clear resin and dye. Those things are definitely not cheap. If I where making this for a movie or theater and they had a large enough budget I would totally cast the crystal and make a resin one.

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I am currently making a staff for my costume for October and am using your video as a guide, mostly just for the materials used to create this epic masterpiece! I really like that you show what products you're using, that really helps, but... I used Elmer's wood glue for the "gem" because I couldn't see what kind was used here... It looks like I should have used Titebond brand instead as Elmer's takes soooo long to dry. Great video though, I can't wait to see how mine turns out!! Again, thank you for the inspiration!!!
@cwlbuilds
@cwlbuilds 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds wonderful. Elmers glue will work just fine but you're right it does take a while to dry. Wood glue is a little stronger and faster drying but you should be totally fine with Elmers. Id love to see it once its done!

I have made staffs and I used the rolled paper cording for the vines. They have a cracked natural look as do some natural vines. Press and wrap the paper cording, using rubber bands or strings to tie the cord on at locations along the staff to keep the vines secure is best. Bailing twine works if you want a different look to your vines. press and wrap the twine, using rubber bands or strings to tie the cord on at locations along the staff to keep the twine secure is best. I have also used newspapers by rolling them very tightly and soaking them in a mixture of water, glue, and flour. Lay them out to partially dry (watch carefully or they will get too dry). Apply glue to paper mache (the area that will touch the staff) press and wrap the paper mache cord, using rubber bands or strings to tie the cord on at locations along the staff to keep the vines secure is best. I made a wonderful staff for Poseidon, the Ocean God. I used a tree limb (I know not very ocean Is it) and attached a metal cage that once held a vase. The cage looked like twisted vines with leaves on. I had to bend the cage together after I inserted a hand-blown glass Jellyfish paperweight inside the cage. I made a staff of God also, I used a tree branch and another wire cage (previously held a vase) with a paperweight inside that was a hand-blown glass Earth globe paperweight.

What if you had maybe 4 fake blades come up and hold the crystal in place like a jewel ring? Basically a magical spear, a caster has to protect themselves even without spells. I’d also try and find a way to simulate flames if I made one, maybe that thin pantyhose-like fabric with thin wires around the edges. Somehow hide two on the top and spiral them down the staff while occasionally crossing each other. Oooh or thorny vines, maybe fake roses blooming from them!

I am trying to make my crystal out of resin. I can get the shape but I an trying to cast a small cavity for an LED light to make it glow. My problem has been getting the plug to release the resin clings to them even when I coat them with a sealer or clear spray. Any suggestions? I did drill out the first one but you could see the marks from the drill and when I sanded you could see the abrasions.
@cwlbuilds
@cwlbuilds 5 жыл бұрын
If Im understanding what you've been doing heres what I think you could try. If you where to make a plug from silicon when you cast the resin you should be able to pull the silicon plug out with out much trouble. Another option is to use that one you drilled out and coat the inside of the hole with a thin layer of the same clear resin and that may cover up the scratch marks while still allowing the light to shine through. Hope that helps and send me a picture over on my instagram once you've finished Id love to see!

If you're having troubles with cutting the foam cleanly Id recommend a few things to look out for. Make sure you use a long and sharp box cutting blade. Use slow and sweeping cuts so as you're cutting into the foam you're also slowly sawing into the foam. finally try cutting off smaller chunks at a time until you get a good cut rhythm. Hope that helps!

Those are fine-looking staffs -- I was just surprised that you used matte paint instead of gloss for the crystal (looks more like a magical stone) but that's definitely a way to personalize them. One quick question, is there a particular reason you used wood glue to seal & strengthen the foam before painting instead of water-based polyurethane? (I've used that a lot with polymer clay so I was wondering, since I have it on hand...)
@cwlbuilds
@cwlbuilds 5 жыл бұрын
I used the matte paint because that's just what I had on hand but you are totally right gloss paint would make it look more like a shiny stone. As for the wood glue instead of Polyurethane again it was just what I had on hand and what I had used in the past. If you did some tests before hand to make sure the foam and poly didn't have a bad reaction together I'm sure you could use that as well. Also I would think wood glue would build up thicker layers and therefore be stronger but I may be wrong. Thanks for the comment!
@nairbvel
@nairbvel 5 жыл бұрын
@@cwlbuilds Thanks for the reply! I agree; it can be tricky picking the right polyurethane, but Varathane (and a lot of other brands) give you a choice of oil-based or water-based; I'd still do some tests, but the WATER-based version is usually safe for almost anything -- one just has to read the labels carefully to avoid an industrial-grade "oops!" :-)
