I started with a laptop that belonged to my mom to complete school work for her students (she’s a teacher). The laptop had 4GB of ram. The laptop crashed FL Studio so many times, but that’s what I had, that’s what I used at the moment. I now am happy to have a 16GB Ram MacBook Pro 2018, i7 processor with a 1TB internal SSD. It took me years to be able to upgrade. So to all those that say that they can’t make music because of bad gear.... If you really want to make music, you make music with what you have and then upgrade as you go. Great video Sanjay C

These computers are cheap, easy to repair/upgrade, tough, and stable. Most of my rig would be considered "budget", but it's served me well. I've even had a couple songs on network tv, that I've recorded, mixed, and mastered in my living room on maybe $600 worth of gear (not counting my guitars). I use a T430 for my portable setup and it does the job really well. One thing I will say is in Ableton after adding some heavier effects (Soundtoys, iZotope) it will cut out (as expected). However, within this DAW you can freeze tracks which can help a lot with this! Also almost everything is upgradable from the RAM, storage, display, and CPU. Another option I would recommend looking at is the T440P or the T480 if you have extra cash (but make sure you have good gear surrounding it before this kind of upgrade). Keep making the music you love!

Cool subject, Sanjay! I'm actually typing this on my T430s. I own and use many Lenovo laptops. They are tough as nails, fairly easy to upgrade and repair, and as you stated, pretty cheap. I have a few recommendations as well for those that have a bit more cash to spend: 1) Try to get the laptop with the NVIDIA chipset. Graphics performance will be better and some plugins take advantage of it. 2) The Hybrid drive is nice, but if you can at least go to a 500gb SSD, do it. They are running about $50.00 now, and you will get a huge performance increase, but far less power usage, which will help your battery life if you are working portable. 3) You can hook up an external monitor using the mini-Display port on these laptops. You will need a mini-Display port to convert to HDMI to DVI and you can go to a Thrift Store/Internet marketplace and get them cheap (I find them for $20 or less) OR get the docking station on Ebay for $20.00 and get all the video output ports. And as you mentioned, go for the RAM upgrade as well.

All true, however a computer with only 4GB will struggle with a project with many audio tracks and plug-ins running in real time. More powerful computer and an external drive would help greatly. I used to live in Madagascar, the #4 poorest country in the world. Something like $350 was indeed a year's worth of paycheck if you're lucky enough to get a job. If you can receive stuff I can find some cheap garage sale gear and send it to you. I live in the US now and even low wage jobs here make me feel like a rich king when I think about my past. Best wishes for your journey brother.

@gid I always hated the price gouging that happens whenever stuff is hard to find or import in the country I came from. Sometimes they would sell a cheap $25 microphone for $120 or so and it was very bad. I indeed feel very lucky to be here hence me trying out all hobbies etc to not waste the opportunities I have.

Thank you so much for this video! I have been using a Korg digital 16 track recorder for 15 years , though, recently my old Mac (which, I uploaded everything to for simple distribution) died on me. So, basically I'm clueless about the virtual recording world. I went to Best Buy today and the experience was deflating. No one really helped me understand the parts that I would need to start this journey. This video though....what a relief!! I thought that I would be well over 2k for something resembling a studio. Not so though. Thank you again. From one artist to another, I deeply appreciate you and your willingness to share information.

Well, I'm getting this in-home music studio for Christmas and I am SOO excited. The only thing I'm doing differently is this: I am using FL Studio 20 instead of Cakewalk, I am getting a launchpad since ! already have a controller, and I am getting the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd Gen) USB Audio Interface. The bare minimum gear is not recommended. Coz we will have to upgrade sooner or later then its a waste of money on the very cheap stuff. Don't get laptop, get a PC. Get good keyboard. Studio monitors are not necessary in my opinion, get a good headphone. Get the Focusrite Scarlett bundle.
@apollossoundgarden6674 жыл бұрын
I used the Focusrite bundle in my home studio: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKWlmmWjm9eso5I and it's great! I do use a laptop tho, but it handles just fine, plus you can work anywhere.

Thank you for putting that together. The only substantial drawback that I see with this setup is the limited 1.600 x 900 screen resolution of the laptop. To me every pixel counts when producing music. And the 14 inch screen is another strain on my old eyes. A recommendation for anyone feeling alike would be to spend another 20 bucks on any used 22 inch monitor and there you go *bäm* you got full hd, loads of screen space and even a double screen setup if you dare (having an own screen for the mixer section is worth gold). Again thank you very much Sanjay C!
@SanjayC4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you about the screen. Would really benefit from any $20 monitor that you have laying around. Thanks for the suggestion.

What you want to look at in general is retired "business class" laptops. The Thinkpad T430 in the video is one of them, and they can also come with i7s or 8-16GB of ram or be easily upgraded to them. Theres other models like the 15 inch T530, the smaller X230, or newer ones like T440 and T450 and up. Dell has business laptops with pretty equivalent specs too, such as Latitude E6430. If you are fine with a desktop rather than a laptop, Dell Optiplex beefier than those laptops can also be found dirt cheap. Check out school auctions and stuff around you, these machines (laptops and desktops) get thrown out by the pallet when they upgrade their computer labs, that is why they are so cheap in general. Govdeals dot com is a good place to look, then craigslist, then finally ebay. As for what CPU gen - third (Ivy Bridge) or fourth gen (Haswell) Intel i5 or i7 or newer is what you want. Dont go with 2nd gen (Sandy Bridge) or older.

@@SanjayC hai! I wanna say a thing that fl studio gives unlimited time trail. The only limit *some* plugins and you can't save the project. But,it is a lot for beginners to learn. I mean I was did music in trail version of fl studio for 2 years and just bought the signature bundle 2 months ago for this long time gap. And I like ableton live as much as fl studio. Because I want to learn many DAWs such fl,live,pro tools,bandlab. If you make a series of ableton live tutorials in 10 mins time covering each section of live such as arranging workflow and tools to arrange,session view's looping workflow,using fx,importing,exporting, installing plugins etc,etc.,😅 REALLY no one explains and teaches as you do🤗 If you do tutorials I think it'll be useful for lot of people😍
