@@richardbinkley8487 the build i did about 8 years ago was with a larger cpu fan is still the original fan. I'm hoping the 40mm fans hold up to the test of time as well. But ingot 4 of them for like 10 bucks off Amazon. So if they go out at least they are cheap and easy to replace. I'll update if they go out or in a years time as a follow up.

I've been wanting to build a paludarium for over a year. I have all the parts sitting in my garage. I won't touch it until I know exactly what I'm going to do. I have watched HUNDREDS of videos on this. This video is the first one I've seen that I agree with 100%. It's a pro build. I see too many people keeping their false bottoms saturated in these builds and using shortcuts that don't make sense. I am truly impressed by this video.

You are right, we cannot cut corners especially when it comes to water features if we want them to be successful. There is no such thing as the "perfect" build ;) Don't hold yourself back from creating and making dream projects in fear of making mistakes : it might make you regret either the long wait or the smallest mistale you might make. If you have all the equipment and if you've done a thourough reasearch, go for it ! There is no rush to finish it in one sitting, if you are unsure about a creative decision, just take a break and regroup. I know I've held back many projects I wished I would have tried sooner

Holds up with no issues. They also sell a pond and stone that is black. But if you are covering it with drylok or something similar, there is no need to spend the extra $$$ for the color

I’ve watched this video over 100 times while I built this Paludarium. Every time I did, I caught another detail that I had previously missed. I couldn’t find this glass enclosure so I built a cabinet and stand from 2x4’s, plywood and a couple gallons of epoxy. I finished most of the build and am currently waiting for my plants. I’ve done many projects over the years. This, by far, is the most frustrating and complex project I’ve ever attempted. Many times I’ve considered taking it out in the back and burning it. I am really glad I didn’t because now that I’m nearing the final stages, it is by far the most rewarding and beautiful project I’ve ever built. My friends and family who have seen it are absolutely amazed. This will not be my last Paludarium build. Before seeing this video, I didn’t know what a Paludarium was and would have NEVER considered building it without this very detailed “How to Build a Paludarium DIY” video. Thank you, Brad.

Your tutorials are great. You really have a knack for explaining everything thoroughly and teaching, basically. I've only got a bit of finishing touch planting to do on my first vivarium. I'll be getting a crestie sometime in the spring. My nieces and nephew are totally psyched. It has turned out well, all in all. Using NEHERP for the substrate was a good call. They include more than enough bottom and substrate, at the most reasonable price I could find. The microfauna they sent was very low population though. I think I'm gonna need to reseed, or seed properly perhaps. Look forward to more from your channel :)

You will be surprised how many 10 isopods could multiple. I put about 20 in one of my arid ackie monitor builds and there are 100's now. I use that enclosure to seed others now. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢

Just need to correct them as they come. A lot of the things I have learned were trial and error. So I figured I'd make some videos to try and help the next person out. Troy Goldberg has a build video, it's a background tutorial I believe, on his giant front opening tank, and when he applied the drylok to the expanding foam he didn't even use a full coat. He just made a kind of light sparse coat. It threw me off. His work is amazing, so this should be a successful technique.

Awesome! I would probably create a false wall back to run all my tubing up and over since I’m using a 75wide aquarium and I’m afraid of drilling into glass and messing up. I will definitely use all the other ideas !!

And about how far up is the input exterior canister filter hole? How much higher is the water overflow hole from the input exterior canister filter hole?

The hole size in the glass for the input exterior canister filter was the same or closest to (on the larger side) of the outside diameter of the hose. I went 4" above the waterline for this hole. Thank you and I belive it is 1/8th inch. I got it from home depo by the plexiglass. The silicone in that section I found to work best. It's 100% silicone in a white tube with red on it. It's for plastics and animal safe once curred.

Thank you, Jathmin! If you have some extra glass laying around, do a test first. Butnit really is super simple. Just let the weight of the drill do the work. The airducts add so much to the build. I have the air flow blowing up bit I'm sure it can be done either way. I just thought it would be more natural to have the air/wind at the top. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢🌱

I just want to thank you not only for being so clear and specific, but also for all the editing and recording you had to do, to present this information. Thank you for you comment. I never knew how much could actually go into making a video until I started lol. I'm currently working on a PC fan video where I use 4 different examples. I'm just waiting on 1 more price tk the puzzle to make it a quick release and easy to remove. Hopefully soon. But I have noticed the vivariums and paludariums I put fans in do very well for the plants . Helps remove stagnant air. 🤘💯🦎🐍🐢🐸

Love the video man, really well done, and great attention to detail. One question though, when laying your dark final coat to then achieve the rock, are you using the quikrete dye directly on the already dry drylok? Or are you mixing quikrete and drylok for that dark final layer?

I'm glad you found my channel and finding helpful. I just uploaded an update on this enclosure yesterday. Day 1 - day 662. I run the fans from 930am to 1130am, and 530pm to 730pm. I might add a half hour long duration in the middle ofnthose times after I mad some adjustments once the plants grow in some more (I trimmed a lot of them back) but the more plants the more I'll run them.

Fabulous build, thank you. Question about the fogger. I've had trouble getting my Foggers to extend over long and high distances. The tubing they supply sags and then the fog just trickles out. Is that why you use the PVC? To help it travel a long distance so it can put out the same amount of fog? Or am I just using too small of a fogger do you suppose?

Thank you, I just had to cut some of it back a little bit because it was starting to grow in way to much lol. It may be to small of a fogger your using. I just added the pvc for cosmetic, and so the tub wouldn't need to make a 90° angle. This way it attaches to the pvc and the pvc does the 90° angle. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢🌱

Awesome, glad you are inspired to build your own. No I added in the sound effects to the lighting in the video. I don't have the Thunderstorm on a set schedule. I usually turn on the Thunderstorm if I'm showing the build to someone. But for everyday use it may be disturbing to animal inhabitants.

@Remy Um glad to hear you are going to start your paludarium. When it comes to cohab I would suggest starting with dart and mourning geckos to get a feel for cohabitation. Once you feel confident and learning behaviors, go ahead and start thinking about adding tree frog. Currentl all 3 species are doing well. I have removed sine mourning geckos to another enclosure because of them being parthenogenetic. Make sure you have a large enclosure and make a lot of different areas and visual barriers. I found that when it comes to the water area, you can be successful while still maximizing surface area and water portion. Humidity is well. Have fun with your build and feel free to ask any questions. Best advice I can give is take your time with making water section secure and water tight. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢

Do your dart frogs do okay with that big water feature? I’ve started working on a huge paludarium of my own but recently a lot of people have been putting the fear into me that the dart frogs will drown.

I think it is something to be mindful of. I have added a lot of surface area with the background to where I was able to more then triple the usable space I lost from the water feature. I personally never had any issue with it but i monitor them closely. Another paludarium I have has 3 darts in it for 7 years now with jo issues. In this build video they both sit in the waterfall and have never gone into the "pond" area, even if there is a fruit fly in the water. I have seen them watch it and wait for the fly to climb out then eat it. Darts can swim they just aren't great at it, but for something like this they would be able to easily climb out if needed. When I first put them into this paludarium I placed them into the water so I would be there to observe them. They swam out just fine. I did this more then once to be sure and to also teach them what to do incase they go in when I'm not home. You can also get a camera that hooks up to wifi to do a Time-lapse and see if there are any issues.

Could you put something over the foggers like bark or something so it tumble over and falls into the space instead of looking like two jets? Or would it cause a problem with the fogger? Anything is possible, and putting cork would hide it so it doesn't look like the lid is going to take off lol. I have one of my 1st paludarium builds in here that shoes a few ways on how I hide the fog from a top entry. It's not a full build but and overview. I think it's called tips and tricks somewhere in the thumbnail. But I found the plant growth will hide the origin of entry in a few months. Currently I just see fog working its way through the plants instead of the top. Not sure if my reply made sense lol Thanx for watching 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢🌱

What’s the trick to getting the doors off so easily?

If you have a spare exo terra laying around give it a test run. Open the door and lift up and towards you. Making sure not to put your other hand on the topnof the frame. When you put it back in pit the top peg in the hole. Then slide the bottom peg along the bottom lip until it seats in the designated swing arm hole. If it's a real tight exoterra sometimes you can use a razor and cut 3-5 inches by just running the blade along the top outside rim of the frame/lid. There are some helpful videos also on KZbin as well

Good question, it really depends on the kind of wood thay is used. Cork bark holds up very well with humidity. The ghost wood holds up well to but will go through a mold process (normal with most things as it acclimates) but will clear up in a week or 2. The drift wood and spider wood have no issues. The foam has no issues what so ever. 🤘💯🦎🐍🐢🐸🌱

Temps are usually around varying Top, hight 70's Mid, mid 70s Bottom, low 70s If I turn the water heater up, it can adjust the numbers above.

I have not had this issue. I make sure I clean the glass with rubbing alcohol. You can put down some silicone 1st to reinforce it, too. If I only did the back wall, I would proply run into some issues, but with 3 sides done, it also helps hold it in place. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢🌱

I said, "The water pass through," not water faster. I did have to listen to it a few time though. It does sound like I say water faster lol. But to your comment. I have noticed that when plant leaves from the canopy fall into the water, they will end up on the screen (water pass through), so in a way, it won't make it to the back chamber. Keeping the back chamber as debris free as possible.

How well do the tincs swim when they accidentally go into the water?

I've kept darts in small paludarium bodied water or large paludariums with a lot of usable space. Over the last 10 yearsbi have not had an issue. I purposely place them into water once new to the enclosure so I can see them swim out. Since doing so, i have never seen them enter the water. If I had a concern they would not be in there. They are not great swimmers but can still get out if needed based on the initial time seeing them in. Butbonce again I have not seen them jump, fall or enter the water on their own. I would suggest if you are new to dart frogs to not do this on your 1st go around.

I think it's mixed opinions. Facts are they are not great swimmers but can swim out of water. My Blue Azureus Tinctorius in another build for the last 8+ years have done great with a water feature. In this build my colbolts are doing well. I watch them to make sure there is not an issue. If there is they get moved out. They do not use the pond section but I often see them haning out in or in the waterfall. I do loose some floor space for them with the pond but I built the hardscape background in a way to maximize surface area to make up for that. They seem happy in this enclosure. Eating well. Out and about always coming out to see what I'm doing in the animal room. With that being said I do suggest an experience keeping only keep a pond area and watch for signs of stress. I have also put them in the water to watch them get out with ease and so if they did go in when I was not around they would know exactly where to go and how to get out. Each time their instinct too over and they got onto land with no problem. Hope this answer helps.

You drilled holes in the glass. Is/Was that tempered glass? Most glass in enclosures are tempered at this point. I've never attempted to cut a hole in tempered. I need to to some predrilling in an Aquarium for a sump filtration.

Thanx for the question. No, it was not tempered glass. Exo Terra doesn't use tempered. Other fish tanks might, but it usually says if they are. You can search tricks using polarized sunglasses and see the difference between tempered and nontempered glass. But drilling glass is fairly easy. Just use water to cool the bit. A Jig will be your friend and add no pressure to the drill. Let the weight of the drill do the work. It usually takes me about 4-5 minutes to drill through 1/4"glass. Hope this helps 🤘💯🦎🐸🐢🐍🌱

Holds up great. But I also did a coat a day for like 10 or 12 days (overkill but I wanted to be safe not sorry, been there done that lol) No leaks, that I can tell evidence by waterline. I liked doing the xps board because it's a lot less pourise than spray foam. (Sprayfoam has more potential to not have everything covered), and it's a harder surface. Then Drylok the xps base in a few times. Then sprayfoam over that for details if wanted. Then, drylok over that.I hope that makes sense, lol. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢. I'll be doing a year update when the time comes

How do you access the fan if you need to replace it?

Good question. I remove the cork bark "lid" I made over the top of the lid I made with the corrugated plastic door I made in the top of the airduct itself. Then, just pull the fan out by the cord. To put a new fan in, I just set it into the airduct and push it down slowly with a ruler applying even pressure. 🤘💯🐢🐍🐸🦎

I have read that most dart frogs are not good swimmers and shouldn't have access to deeper than their heads. Your build is what I've always dreamed of but how are you preventing your dart from drowning?

It can be a controversial topic. And I wouldn't suggest it to new dart frog keepers. With that being said, in order this to be successful, I need to have a backup enclosure ready if it doesn't work out during any time of them living in here. I had a previous paludarium that had 3 blue azureus living in there for 8 years. The tricks i have found are to make a larger than needed land area. This can also be achieved by doing 3 walls of the background. Make it easy for them to climb out of the water. They are not great swimmers, but they are going to have a natural instinct to swim out of the water rather than sink like a rock. I will actually place them into the water when they 1st get into the enclosure so I can supervise them swimming out a few time incase they accidentally fall in later on. But I'm still yet to lose a dart due to drowning. I also don't keep 2 females in an enclosure to reduce them wrestling and drowning 1 another. I also keep a close eye on them while living in the enclosure. I think it comes down to the individual frog and their behavior rather than a blanket statement. With all that being said, nothing is 100% guaranteed. Definitely do your research and do what you are comfortable with if you decide to go either way. Hope this helps. 🤘💯🦎🐸🐍🐢🌱

You blew my mind, suggest using pvc pipe or pvc square railing instead of corrugated board for filter setups. Your a beast. A plus for the wife getting you the tank.but if you want totally custom bro better quality make it completely out of glass. A premium just for a vent in-between door and bottom space I'm making my own. Also you could of done a overflow like a standard tank on bottom saved alot of plumbing and expensive parts. I just an idea.
