This is a great video.I built a pickup winder several years ago and threw it out when I moved. I was planning to make a new and better one. That was 19 years ago and I still haven't built one. The winder in this video is similar to several I've seen on KZbin, which means it must be a good design. I was impressed by the bobbin mount. None of the other KZbin winders have that. I have ordered the parts for a new winder, which will be a lot like this one. I found the parts at very low prices from an Asian source; however, I take a buyer beware approach toward this source. The motor, counter, and speed control cost $16 including shipping.

Chase, not sure if you'll ever see this but THANKS... this has demystified it all to allow me to commit to building one. The thing I want to do is automate the random 'scatter' alignment and avoid the manual guiding of the wire. I imagine one or two cammed mechanism out of phase that repeat and duplicate the left/right scatter pattern for a given run of wire (7k winds avg.) Something that systematically - for example - alternate left/right movement of the guide quickly for 15 seconds then followed by slowly for 20 seconds, then 45 secs.. etc. The purpose being to be able to replicate a pickup that comes out with a great sound. In other words.... not predict randomness but replicate it as much as possible.

LOL I know what you mean @5:50 ( Sometimes a problem ) Back in the 70s There was no place to find pickup parts let alone a winder. It's great that you posted this video. Like most of us kids we did not have the money to buy a new guitar so we tired to soup up what we had.Replacing pickups was costly so we had no choice. Chase'sWKshop - Chase, I enjoyed your winder video and plan to watch your other videos. I also subscribed. Regarding that particular digital counter, I have found that it is inaccurate above (around) 100-150 rpm (counting once for every 2-3 revolutions). The way I discovered this is, I wound a few hundred turns with thin sewing thread. Then I unwound the bobbin by hand and counted the turns. It was way off every time by at least twice as many turns on bobbin. I tried 2 identical counters and switched sensors with nearly the same results every test. It was a real bummer, ordering from china takes 2 months sometimes.

When you did the test where did you have the magnet in comparison to the shaft of the motor. That’s one reason why I moved it out as far as I could from the center was to try to keep that from happening. Have any idea of a better counter for it? Awesome video, thanks for the inspiration. I just made mine today. One thing you might want to reconsider is that single bolt being used as the fixing, which makes it unbalanced as it turns. You might want to fix the bobbin holder to the spindle from both sides to balance it better (and consider using grub screws or something smaller than that heavy bolt). Should make it run a little smoother and mean less wear on the DC motor :)

hi, you did a simple and efficient job for use. You gave me the inspiration to design a similar one. You were right to use a 12V motor with little effort so you can brake it and reduce the risk of breaking the copper wire. I intended to use a 400W sewing machine scooter with foot switch. For some time I've been watching videos of people building, or should I say, "over-building", pickup winders. I mean, heavy-duty motors, 1" diameter shafts with industrial-strength, pillow block bearings, pulleys, V-belts...on-and-on it goes. It all seemed complete overkill to me and I kept wondering why I couldn't just use an inexpensive, direct-drive gear-motor and be done with it. No pulleys, no belts, no drive shafts, no bearings, just the gear-motor with a speed controller and a mandrel to hold the bobbin. I never built it because I figured if nobody else was doing it, my concept must be wrong. Happily, I saw this video and immediately put my own plans into action. I now have a perfectly functional winder that cost me about $30 to build using an old R/C airplane motor speed control I had lying around, a cheap gear-motor, and a cheap, magnetically-triggered LED counter. Love the video and will build. Hey Chase, your vibration is from the bolt that tightens the bobbin to the shaft. Drill and put an identical one on the other side, with just a little glue on it. Put a touch of fingernail polish on the one you tighten, to differentiate it from the stationary one and end that vibration. PEACE

Looking forward to building it this weekend. Question, do you still think a 2amp fuse is necessary in the wiring up of it? Also are the fuse holders themselves generic? They are basically just a clip in a case with either two wires if it's inline or poles if it's a surface mount holder. Looking through the homedepot page I can't find any fuse holders actually specifying 2amps-The holders don't have anything else added to make them amp specific do they?

There's a person there who builds instruments and can help me and I have access to all the best machines and wood. I'm finding out that the hardware and electronics are what seems to cost the most. I thought that if I could make my own pickups I could save a little bit and be able to experiment a bit.

@@ChasesWKshop I was just thinking that I could use a wood lathe with a variable speed drive to wind coils. The Guild has several. All I need is a counter and a wire guide. I can use a face plate with a disk of wood to mount the coil and sensor magnet. The wire guide can go into where the tool rest goes. Boom! I got a coil winder for the price of a digital counter.

Hello, i build a similar winding machine just with different counter, but almost same design. I think i having a problem with motor gear. I think it have some kind of wigle in gear axle and the bobbind holder when im winding get some shaking. I think thats causing that i have loose winds on bobbin. Do you have same problem ?

Hey Chase, I’m gonna rebuild this, this weekend out of extrusion and draw and print up some mounts for this motor. I have a lot of Item extrusion laying around here as well as a bunch of Delrin lol. hey men great video, great to see this is your first video. I'm waiting for all the stuff to build my own, have the same counter. I have no idea how it will come out but it's great to see your process. I have same questions about which swich to use for what but I think as you said with changing the counter position that will come with practice. maybe you can reduce the long screw for the pickup base wood? to get less resistance in the spins ... it's an idea. I'm going to use a circular acrylic instead but we will see how that goes.

@@ChasesWKshop all in my head are questions at the time I didn't receive anything for the build yet, and a lot of anxiety is going on here haha I don't know If you can respond to this but one question I have is how much power makes the motor because I didn't use a heavy material for the box and bought a metal enclosure like DIY electronic kit (not so heavy) so I don't really know If I should A-make a mounting clamp to a table. B-Mount it to a square piece of acrylic. C-A square piece of wood. Also, put some rubber furniture things on the corners? As I said a lot of questions my friend hahha

No, if you buy a speed controller it should have everything in it. I built my own so I had to add the transistor.

Hey man, love your videos! Do you have links for the 3/16" rod and shaft collars you used? Seems like the simplest part, but I'm having trouble finding ones that fit together easily!

Check McMaster Carr. I started using a little bigger guide size of 1/4”. You might be able to find one that size at a local hardware store. The shaft collars may need to be ordered online. You can also search for an 8mm size. Usually those are more readily available. Let me know what you find or if you need more help. Hope all is well.

​@@ChasesWKshop Thanks, I really appreciate the response! Do you mean use 8mm shaft collars with a 1/4" rod? I was having trouble fitting a 3/16" collar on a 3/16" rod, so does a slightly larger size collar make it an easier fit?

@@davidtennyson-m2m you’re welcome. If you buy 1/4” rod be sure to buy 1/4” shaft collars. Same with 8mm. Its just you might find an 8mm size if it’s hard to find a 1/4”. Actually to be closer to an 1/4” you would need 6mm. 8mm is closer to 5/16 but it really doesn’t matter in size for the guides. As far as the collars not fitting you can always put the rod into a drill and use sandpaper to thin the diameter enough for the collars to fit. I’d use 400 grit until I got it to the right size then use 600 and 1000 to smooth it out. I hope this makes sense. If not let me know bud.

Chase, just found your channel, subscribed... lot of catch-up to do. I'm being lazy, I did scan a bit but have you played around with using neodymium magnets (small button type) into pickups? Second lazy question... do you have a CNC you recommend?

Awesome bud, welcome to the channel! I haven’t messed with those type magnets they are probably too strong to work with pickups but you never know. As far as a CNC I’d look at Gatton cnc. That’s who I built mine after. Dave’s a really cool guy and now you can buy a kit. It’s defiantly a diy kit but he explains everything. You can get into it a lot cheaper than a ready to go CNC machine plus you can learn how everything works and that helps a lot when something doesn’t work lol. Just remember too you’ll need a machine, cad and cam software (I use fusion 360) and software to run the machine (I use Mach 3). I spent about a year building mine. Bought stuff here and there to spread the money over a long period of time. Hope this helps let me know if you have anymore questions bud.

@@ChasesWKshop Yes, they pack outrageous mag power in small package but I've played around with some weaker varieties and they DO work and easy to experiment with... I just don't have the experience or variety of testing to offer any conclusions/theories ... hence my question. I have an electronics background so I want to systematically approach this .... hence my next project is a DIY gauss meter... can't afford the pro ones. Since pickups are so subjective, I want to head into this resisting fokelore, assumptions, and lazy conclusions (YT is packed with them). Thanks much on the CNC info... I had already posted my question when I saw that you actually built your own!! Of course you did ...... ha ha.

@@ccook31 gotcha bud. With your background in electronics you won’t have a problem making them. You may can tell me, I think the stronger the magnet the bigger the magnetic field would be so it would not pick up the string as much as a lower powered magnet with a smaller field? For the record I don't think bigger is better for the mags, But you've hit on exactly why this is so elusive... intuitively you are correct - is there a sweet spot for the string where it's 'more visible' to the windings?. But what if it's not the intensity but the shape (or density)? Someone at Fender gave us a clue when they discovered a metal base plate under the Tele bridge added juice/focus. I don't think mag fields can be reflected, but they can certainly be contorted... I'm going to play around with soldering short sections of string to the live strings directly over the pickup. Based on this 'string visibility' theory I should see more output... yes? And if they are short enough they shouldn't effect harmonics or tone...(?)

There should be a motor in the description of the video along with other parts for the build. I’d try to find something that’s a little slower than 4000. Also the counter can only count up to about a 1000rpm. I never wind mine faster than 700-800 rpm.

How's the motor mounted inside? is it just sticking through a hole and glued? or is there bracket?

Hey Chase, I just made my own pickup winder using the parts/improvements you suggested and it turned out awesome. Do you have any tips for making sure the bobbin doesn't have any wiggle to it and getting it perfectly straight?

Thomas Ring great glad it worked out for you. I just use the painters tape and super glue trick to mount them. As far as getting it centered I usually just eye it and try to get it as close to center as possible. You could find the center line of the bobbin then align it with the shaft hole. i made mine out of an old fan, i just count how many turns, its not very percise but i would guess my margine of error is within 100 turns, and thats pretty close

Re: Motor and power supply, noted you installed a 12V - 1000rpm motor. I've found numerous e-tailers for motors, but there are no specs (i.e. max load AMP or Watts) so it's almost impossible to match a motor with the proper 12v power source. Did you just grab any 12V power source or were you able to match the power source to the motor. Thanks, R.

R A the motor I used stated it had a .18 amp loaded current rating and a .04 amp non load current rating. I used a 1.5 amp wall wart power supply. The one I use in the wiring video was a 2 amp power supply. As long as you have enough amps to run the motor with the power supply you will be good to go. R A no you’ll be fine. The other way around is where you’d have issues. Make sure to throw in a fuse between the power supply and the motor speed controller. 1 amp will be good. I used 18 gauge stranded.

R A a 2 amp power supply will power up to 2 amps. It doesn’t matter if it’s .01 amps or 2 amp motor. Although if it was a 2 amp motor I would go with a bigger power supply because you want head room by that I mean you don’t want the power supply running full amps all the time. With a 2 amp motor I’d go with say a 2.5 or 3 amp power supply. Now if you try to power a 5 amp motor with a 2 amp supply you’ll have issues. Hope this makes sense bud. It’s not the fastest winder there is but it’s great to learn on. Maxs speed is about 1000 to 1200 rpm with the counter. I’ve not had any issues with it.

Rahul Sayami a magnetic reed switch would be slower rpms. The problem with a mechanical switch is at high speeds the mechanism doesn’t have time to reset so you will get inaccurate readings at high rpms. It should state its max reading rpms. Hope this helps.

Best damn video on pickup winders ever made! Thanks Chase! I have never even touched a soldering iron before, but I am going to try to build this project! I went and added all the items you suggested to my cart on Amazon, and I had to go to Home Depot for the rod and shaft collars. I just have one quick question, if you have a few minutes... will this power supply on Amazon work for this motor and speed controller? www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AZLA9XQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A8IA87KY629&psc=1 It is a 12V DC 2A wall wart, but it only is rated for 24 Watts, whereas the speed controller says 30 Watts. I imagine too little is better than too many watts, but I wanted to ask before I bought something that will not work. You mentioned in a previous comment reply that you are thinking about publishing the schematic or plans for your design. I sure would appreciate that, and would be happy to pay you for it. I am pretty sure that I can figure out how to wire the female power supply "in" to the speed controller, and then wire the speed controller to the switch, and then the switch to the motor... but... like I said, I am as new to electronics as it gets, so, any specifics would be helpful as all get-out.

Hi Chase, great vids on this channel. Subscribed! Thanks for the detailed explanation and walkthrough. You may have seen this but I'll put it here anyway. When researching this one I was trying to dream up a motor mount when I found this on Ebay: 37mm DC Geared Motor Mounting Bracket Holder + 6mm Hex Coupling: www.amazon.co.uk/Geared-Mounting-Bracket-Holder-Coupling/dp/B00TK0X03U I hope you don't mind the link. There's six threaded holes in the front of that (37mm size?) motor gearbox you have there at about 2:48, this right angle bracket might give more mount options and maybe allow the motor to be mounted on a swivel arm or outside the wooden box to achieve different pitch . The bracket (on Ebay) also comes with a brass Hex nut and a threaded hole for a grub screw to grip the motor's driveshaft and connect stuff to it. Cheers!

Ok, follow up. I built one of these, wound about 12 pickups with it and found the run-out on these RC motors to be highly variable. No matter what I did the commutator shaft just had too much end play in it to keep the bobbin spinning true. So I bought a cheap mini lathe from eBay AU$50 and used the box, speed controller, counter & footswitch I already had, hooked in the lathe motor at 12vdc. The motor has a drill chuck and spins very true now. It also gave me more options to quickly change bobbins for humbucker or single coils. Awesome man. Thanks for the input bud. I’m thinking the only way to get rid of it would be to use a shaft and pulleys like in the Pickup Winder I just got through doing.
