About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on KZbin videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

I really appreciate that voiceover on the clip with Jonah. You said, "my farmer friend, Jonah". Not "My friend Justin's son" or anything else which positions him as anything other than your peer. Not only is Jonah smart and marture, and already pretty skilled at building things of his own, but he is a knowledgeable farmer, so it makes sense that you didn't refer to him like he is a child. But I think a lot of adults would not have spoken of him as a peer like you did, even ones who know him well. It's SO IMPORTANT for kids to have adult friends, especially through their teenage years. Adults who aren't their parents, who can be another resource for support and experiences. Glad to see you becoming one of those people for Jonah... I've always thought he would make a great apprentice for you!

Jason: I have rolled plastic upward, as you have for this demonstration, but the rain pools on the roll and created weight that you probably do not need nor want. If you would roll it under instead, the rain will run off and keep it relatively lightweight. Just a thought, before you get the pigs in there and have a harder time accomplishing unrolling and re-rolling. Love your videos.

Just one tip. Make sure you can bring a trailer up to the door. When its time to make Bacon they can walk in to the trailer on there own . One week before. Bring the trailer in and only feed them in the trailer. That way when it's time you can feed and close the door behind them. That way you and the pigs will have less stress. Good luck

You could move the tin and cattle panels after you make some compost to the other half and grow a garden where the pigs were. Put up greenhouse plastic on half, save some $. And grow pigs on the other half. Then 2 years down the line that whole thing would have great compost in it.

You’re gonna love raising pigs 🐖 🐖. We raised them when I was growing up. Me and my sister were in charge of “slopping the hogs” and taking the water hose and cleaning out the pig pen. It had a wooden floor. Got a lot of good bacon ham and sausage for sure. Those were the good ole days. You’ll be ready for two more pigs when you process the ones you raise. Loved the video!!!

Jason, I strongly advise that you consider a darker cover over the pigs' section as that white tarp will definitely not be enough protection on the pigs against the brutal NC sunshine during the hot summer days. You need to at least provide them with some solid shade protection from the sun or else they might have alternative health issues popping up regarding skin issues etc.

You might be able to use a nontoxic stain or oil which would extend the life of your wood. Otherwise the elements will rot the baseboards in about 4 years. But if you apply an oil each fall they will last much longer. ☺from personal experience. Wonderful structure! So exciting!! Good job!
@kaisenji

Agreed. If I put anything on the ground save for the raised beds, its pre-treated. Even then, the wood is stained to last longer.

Also cast in place concrete ground feeders are nice. It keeps them from flipping feeders over. We raise 4 pigs a year and name them Breakfasr / Lunch / Dinner and Trader for when you sell trader , It woll pay for all the feed for the other stock. Dont be afraid to butcher your own hogs. You will be a pro after just 1 processed hog. Good Luck !!!
