I am ready to upgrade my rabbit hutches and really like your design. One question, if you are still answering years-old videos, is that it seems you put this on cinder blocks, but I couldn’t see them under your other hutches. If not, do you prefer “blocks” or “not-blocks”? Thank you.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 5 ай бұрын
You bet, you can leave a comment on any video and I’ll try my best to respond within 24hrs or sooner. I still use blocks but you can also use treated 2x4’s or 4x4’s with cement anchors for a stronger build. It really depends on your wind conditions and size/ weight of hutch. Best of luck with your build!

Really glad I found your videos. We use TS cages, too, and I was trying to design a hutch to hold the cages. Your videos are really helpful and encouraging. Question: Do you build a run and cool box for every doe or do you swap out the doe that is about to Kindle?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 4 жыл бұрын
It's recommended to assign a dedicated nesting box for your does and to avoid swapping so I try to adopt the same method with ramps and cooling totes the best I can. But I have swapped out does before with no problems at all but I always clean the totes on day 29 to prepare for the litter.

I would love some advice! I have a couple outdoor hutchs here in ontario for my rabbits, they love the outdoor life! My doe recently had her first surviving kits, 5 of them. her past litters were only 1 kit each and they did not make it. She has seemed to catch on to how to be a mom, continuing to pull fur and babies look fed. They are now 4 days old. Mama bunny has become very protective anytime i go into the hutch for feeding or to check on the babies, lunges at me and tries to bite. I have limited myself to just looking in to see the fur moving, instead of physically moving the nest box and checking on the kits... My question for you, is there a chance she could hurt the kits while trying to protect them from me?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 5 жыл бұрын
Momma rabbits around new born litters are sometimes aggressive. You'll also have some Does that don't care at all. In my experience when there bitey believe it or not this is a good sign. This means you have a very productive and good mom that's concerned for her litter and wants to protect them. In most cases these rabbits can still be managed. I've heard of people culling aggressive does and it breaks my heart. They shouldn't take it personally. I think to myself there goes a good breeder. I usually try my best not to mess with the kits around aggressive mom's if I can help it. Especially the first few days. Momma's mood tends to change for the better once the kits reach 10-14 days and start hopping in and out of the nesting box. If you have to get in the cage in the first few days when she's most protective, I'll take some clover or dandelions or maybe even a couple banana peels to keep her occupied while I mess with the litter. If I feel I need them, I'll wear leather gloves for a little more safety from bites. It's very unpleasant to get bit but try your best not to correct them with a swat of the hand. You want your rabbits to only associate your hands with love and care.
@haleyboller9463
@haleyboller9463 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRabbitryCenter Thank you for the reassurance!! She is often very sweet and only became "aggressive" after having the kits, so i will definitely take that as her being a good protective mom, not a mean bunny. She allowed me to pet her today so i am hoping she will begin to calm down a bit more as the days pass!

@@TheRabbitryCenter Your advice and videos have been a life saver for me!! Right now im in need of more advice....Another one of my doe's had a litter of 8 babies a couple days ago...but has not taken to them..She is a first time mom. She has dug at them and tried attacking them multiple times, leaving them squealing and with scratch marks. I have since placed the new litter with the doe who had her babies a couple weeks ago that I mentioned in past comments....praying she will foster them...I dont know what else to do. Risk their real mom killing them, or risk them all dying if the foster mama doesnt take over.
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 5 жыл бұрын
@@haleyboller9463 Usually if the kits are close to the same size they can still get to the nipples and if the kits are only a week old Does usually take to them quickly. Make sure there's not an expired kit in the nesting box. Also use a nesting box that's clean and doesn't have any odors of rats or mice any kind of unwanted predator/pest smell can trigger litter rejection. You can always let nature take its course and only try fostering a few smaller kits and let the fatter healthier kits stay with mom. In turn you can also foster the fat ones knowing they'll have the better chance of surviving the stress and transition getting fostered. Good luck let me know how it turns out.

Have you ever had a problem with rats or raccoons trying to reach through the bars and get at the bunnies? I had it happen to our quail in the same yard my rabbits will be, so I am not sure if this is a concern with rabbits as well
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. When it comes to the rabbits in the cages it's rare but we have had some raccoons on video. We set out the camera to catch what ever was killing our chickens and caught the raccoons looking at the rabbit hutch. Make sure your hay and manure doesn't get so high that the raccoons can stand on it and reach the rabbits. I saw the raccoons inspecting the cages. They'll climbed up and pulled on the cages but quickly realized that they'll need to expel a lot of energy in order to break into the cage which they won't be interested in doing. As far as the runs go the rabbits just run into there tote and the raccoons are confused on where to even dig to get a rabbit. The runs don't have any intruders. The most important thing is to do your inspections every few days to make sure everything is secure.

Do you wish you built it out of pressure treated wood? Is it still holding up?
@TheRabbitryCenter
@TheRabbitryCenter 3 жыл бұрын
It’s holding up great I power wash it every year and a lot of the lumber is covered You could get away with treated wood for the legs and for the hutch holding the cages but in the run I didn’t want them chewing on treated lumber but they don’t really seem to chew it so using treated lumber especially if you’re going to build a deep run excavating a cavity, I would recommend using treated lumber for that. problem with a wooden cage is that it's not durable and its a serious ear canker hub. the mites that cause ear canker love breeding and dwelling on wooden surfaces. so a metal rabbit cage is often strongly recommended.

Thanks for the tip. I appreciate you taking the time. This is something you want to keep up. Annual power washing will help. This design has held up pretty good and is an inexpensive set up.
