I like book collecting because you can do it on any budget depending on what you want to collect.

I’ve always just bought whatever I wanted to read and never considered myself a book collector, just a reader. I have watched several videos like this and one and one where Rebecca “busted” the myths around a book collecting and that got me to thinking about exploring a specific subject. I love dogs and my favorite book growing up was Old Yeller. I also recently read The Call of the Wild for the first time and was captivated; the same with Rick McIntyre’s series on the Yellowstone wolves. So I started looking into it and found a whole slew of books in the same vein as those. I’ve now started a collection of books centered around dogs and wolves and it’s really exciting to have a specific focus and to build my own little library.

I place a certain value in the books that I collect. One is pure aesthetics - I have to like the look of the book. The cover art, the spine, even the font are important to me, and the condition. Preferably no cracked or creased spines. If a book was bought for me or given to me as a gift, that is also very important, and it’s more likely to stay in my collection. And of course the most important is if I just love the book.

Very wise philosophy. Especially regarding aesthetic.

A Gentle Madness by Nicholas A. Basbanes is a good resource for learning the joys and pitfalls of book collecting. Although a little outdated, it is full of cautionary tales about buying books for profit.

@WakinTheDeadFan Many collectors do sell their collections if they know that their children don't have an interest in the items. And many collectors have enjoyed building their collections and know that books for sale at auction or book dealers can fuel the collecting pleasures of others.

@WakinTheDeadFan Well, I think both things happen--collectors who sell in their later years (and some do see collections as investments, as something to help out their retirement), especially if they downsize to smaller homes, and heirs who choose to sell inherited collections. And it's entirely possible to love literature and still prefer to get cash instead of maintaining a sizable collection of valuable books.
