Should I worry about the wood cracking or warping?
@o.g.bwoodwork7 ай бұрын
It depends on a lot of factors: 1. How dry the wood was when it was built 2. How it’s been built 3. Where the table is kept in your house or a customer’s house. 4. If the table is looked after with oiling and waxing over the years.

Lovely looking table mate definitely gonna give it a go! If you were to use a protective coat of something after waxing what would you use? Also what’s the reason for using 50/50 white sprite and linseed oil before the wax?
@o.g.bwoodwork4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I have never used a protective coating. For the tables in my house, I just reapply every year. I may do some research for a protective coat in the near future. The oil and white spirit mix is to nourish the wood, as wax only covers the top of the wood and doesn’t penetrate it. This will also protect the wood from warping, as if it’s sealed from all sides, there’s less chance of moisture entering or existing the wood, making it more stable.
@lozbardwell85104 жыл бұрын
Nice one man that’s really helping thank you 👍🏼 would danish oil and white spirit work the same? Also where did you buy your hairpin legs from? I found some on amazon but not as nice..

Loz Bardwell it’s all good, ask as many questions as you want. 😁. Yeah, I go for the 14 inch ones for coffee tables. Also, I tend to go for thicker steel if possible I.e 12mm instead of 10mm, but it’s all down to preference.

How do you make sure the boards dont dry out and warp/crack? Ive made several tables, pews etc out of reclaimed boards and have had a few issues with them warping over time.
@o.g.bwoodwork4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I’ve had a few issues like that in the past. The main way I try to avoid them, is by using a moisture meter and trying to get the boards as low as possible before I work with them. When I get a delivery, I stack them all with sticks every 20-30 cm to ensure I get air flow and add bricks to the top layer. I’ve found a dehumidifier works really well and speeds up the drying process (note: each room will have an equilibrium, so you mate find it hard to get them past a certain baseline) Also, when I build a table, I make sure I seal both sides of the boards. Sorry if you do all of these steps and I’m teaching you to suck eggs. In some cases, it might be unavoidable though.

Great work. Love this mate. I am thinking of making a dinning table and bench. Would you recommend metal plates underneath to keep scaffold boards together? Any tips would be great Thanks Karl
@o.g.bwoodwork4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karl, much appreciated! I have made a fair few dining tables using a similar method. The only difference I make is adding a support board that the legs go on that goes across all of the boards. This way you won’t get any sag from the weight of the table. Metal plates would also be a great option. Let me know how you get on and if you need any more tips. 😊
@Karlb74264 жыл бұрын
@@o.g.bwoodwork Thanks very much for you reply. I am not sure what you mean to be honest. I am not a great diyer. I am a painter so that part is fine haha. Do you mean just a strip of wood around the edges of the table? Or just strips of wood just going the opposite way of the scaffold boards. Also with mental strips would you put large 1s or just a few small Sorry about questioning I just want to get them right Thanks again Karl
@o.g.bwoodwork4 жыл бұрын
@@Karlb7426 no worries at all mate. For supporting the legs, I would use a board going the opposite way to the scaffold boards (underneath the table). I would use these at each end and place the legs on top of these. I would also add a couple of support boards going across the scaffold boards to add extra strength around the middle of the table. There’s obviously a fair few methods for doing this, but I’ve found this has worked really well for me and my customers. Regarding metal plates, I would probably go for one with a large (ish) surface area at each end where the legs are, and a couple of thinner ones in the middle of the table. I’m going to be building a dining table in a week or so, and I was thinking about filming it. If you want, you can have a watch as reference. It might help you if you haven’t already started building yours. Cheers 😁👍

Great video. Could you not just use batons to fasten the table top together and help reduce warping? Without using glue or dowels. Thanks
@o.g.bwoodwork4 жыл бұрын
Thanks you. Technically yes, but it could put a lot of strain on the end fastenings and could lead to warping and eventually failure. That’s not to say it wouldn’t work for many years. I guess, glue and batons is a bit of a belt and brace approach, but it at least ensures the table will last as long as possible.
@lukewhere4 жыл бұрын
@@o.g.bwoodwork Thanks. So does using the glue and dowels, also help prevent warping as well as keeping it fastened together .
@o.g.bwoodwork4 жыл бұрын
Moisture control would be the best preventative measure for warping. The glue and dowels would help keep things together, but might not help when the wood wants to move (which will happen seasonally). That being said I have some tables that I made with glue and dowels in a conservatory that gets cold and wet in the winter and up to 65 degree C in the summer, and they are yet to fall apart. Another method is to alternate the end grain direction of each board. That way, if it’s does bow/warp, it’ll be a bit wavy instead of a Pringle. (Hope this makes sense)
