You can also use a dmm to measure polarity if you cut your tips off without paying attention.

Thanks for the great video. What did you use for ground rods? to keep it mobile i was thinking the stainless one with a T on top.

Great video! Just subbed and will use your Amazon links to buy the pieces/parts to build one of these for my farm. Thanks for putting this video together!!! ☘️

I think you might have wired this wrong. The light bulb outlet on the controller provides voltage directly from the solar panel and will only work while the sun is shining. The fence exciter needs to be directly connected to the battery. The solar panel just keeps the battery charged. So you should have two wires connected to each terminal of the battery; one set goes to the battery output connection of the controller and the other directly to the fence exciter.

nah the lightbulb icon isnt powered by the solar panel its powered by the battery and the solar panel keeps the battery charged . its not needed to wire to the charge controller it could be connected directly to the battery but it can be also plugged into the charge controller which .... controls the charge...

I have the same toolbox that I had with me for five years doing commercial roofing. I never once had the little sucker get any water in it whatsoever, and the lack of a gasket helped any moisture from wet tools dry off in the bed of the truck. How is she working these days?

But on that note great set up idea and if someone wanted to build one for a cyclops or something larger

The wattage of the solar panel is generally equated to be 10 watts per joule on your energiser but if in doubt youcan just use a higher wattage panel than i recommended

Would a marine battery switch inline between the battery and the fence provide an on/off switch?

What does your set up look like along the fence? Do you have some kind of stand for the solar panel?

Hey could you give me a part list to build a smaller version. I have a 5 mile electric fence than I want to make solar. Help please!

This comment being around a year after you posted the video, I wondered if your setup is still functioning. Reason being, EVERY solar panel I've ever come across SPECIFICALLY warns to attach the battery to the solar controller FIRST, before wiring the solar panel to the solar controller or you most likely will blow the solar panel. How goes it??
@FarmandRanchHacks3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! It still functions great! We actually just repurposed it to a fence in a different pasture a few weeks ago and she’s still going strong.

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m actually going to use this in my upcoming project. I’m still going to give you the credit for your build even though I added a couple of things to make it a little bit better towards what I’m planning to build. Do you mind if I use you as a reference in my video?

How do I know what size panel and controller to get?
@roberttammerawitchey46522 күн бұрын
rough rule of thumb- 10w panel for each joule of fence output. Most controllers have an amp rating in the 10-30 amp zone. With a larger energizer needing only around 500 milliamps, you'd be fine.

Does this battery give 24 hour round the clock energy to the fence charger? Most everyone I see building these use an huge marine battery with over 100 AH

I guess I can’t say I’ve ever touched the fence at 3am, however, it has kept the cattle out of everything we’ve used it on.

How did this work out for you? Curious to make my own!

Decent - I haven’t checked that solar charger in a few months since we haven’t had cattle in there but it was still popping hot 3 months ago or so.

@The gardener We should do a follow up video, but it's still working like a champ. Kelly got shocked last week when he moved it to a new piece of fence.

Definitely need a grounding rod. We used rebar in our setup but didn’t show it.

Help a non-electrician out…. What happens if you simply run the solar panel to the battery, and then the battery to the fence? What do those other two components do?
@FarmandRanchHacks3 жыл бұрын
You would have a fence that was “always on” and very likely a battery that was dead in just a few minutes. The fence charger sends pulses of electrify to the fence so you’re not on 100% of the time and the solar regulator regulates the charging of the battery (in a direct connect setup you’ll likely damage the battery).
@ez4ne12c3 жыл бұрын
@@FarmandRanchHacks thanks for the reply. I have this idea of building one on a pallet. That way I can move it around with the tractor. You could mount the battery box under the panel, so it would have a little extra protection from the weather.

@@FarmandRanchHacks It's possible I've just gotten bad units. After paying for shipping back to Parmak multiple times ($50) I decided to go with Cyclops. I haven't had it very long so I can't make a call yet. They're expensive but I'm willing to pay the price to get a unit that I don't have to worry about...
