Great video! Our pool heater has been broken for two years and it is going to cost $4000 to replace the unit so we’ve been holding off. This is a great way to heat the pool without breaking the bank! The kids will be very happy if I can extend the pool season for an extra few weeks. We just closed our pool so I’ll be doing this DIY project next year. Glad to hear that it only took you 3 hours...it’ll take me longer I am sure.

I did this, it worked great! Kept my pool in NJ warm all summer long, it's still 80! I did not use an electric pump, I used a Beluga pool heater, check it out. No need to use any more electric. If you have a regular intake to the pool, the garden hose attaches right to it. Worked great! I have around 500 feet of hose, could use more.

We are also going to experiment with a timer to let the water sit in the heater for a bit, maybe 10 mins on/off. @@RCInsiders While it might seem like a smart/logical idea in practice and without going into the science of it all too much, in general, you wanna have as much flow as you can muster 100% of the time. Your pool will always be rising in temperature due to the simple physics principle of differential heat transfer, so the more energy you can transfer in, the faster your pool will warm. Ideally then, you'd want to have a pump that can run to the limits of your plumbing setup. Or put simply another way, short bursts of hotter water is not as efficient as constant flow of less warm (but still higher T than your pool) water is.
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, Thank you for your input. What you say makes absolute sense. My theory is this. At some point, when ambient temperature is chilly & there is not a lot of direct sunlight, if you leave it running it would actually be cooling the water? On mostly cloudy days, would there be benefits to deploying a timer? Your thoughts? Thanks for stopping by & happy heating! :) #RCInsiders
@KCM25NJL
@KCM25NJL 4 жыл бұрын
@@RCInsiders in the case of ambient temperature lower than pool water, your plumbing would still be higher T due to its greater ability to absorb even low levels of solar radiation than your pool. Put another way, your pool will lose thermal energy faster sitting still than it would were it travelling round your barely functioning solar heater. A better method to improve the solar heater in those conditions, would be insulation from ground and wind chill. All this said, I'm no expert..... just a little scientific knowledge that may or may not hold true in practice.....so always worth experimenting :) Good luck and please let us know how it goes!

@David Smith Hi David, In theory, I would think you could squeeze a couple more degrees out of it. I think the biggest amount heat transfer is occurring from the sun energy hitting & being drawn into the tube. I think stacking the tubing will block a lot of the energy transfer. I actually added a second unit this year & it helped a lot. I think more surface are is the key. You can see how we added the second unit tomorrow. We will publish between 4-6. See you then :) Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend!! :) #RCInsiders

Great video!!! I was looking at a heat pump pool heater today and on sale here in Southern Ontario it's still $2,000. I've seen a similar set up to yours on KZbin but your thorough explanation and exact parts list makes it stand out as one of the best!! I think I am going to start to build 2 of these this week and connect them together. I only have an 18' above ground but love a warm pool. Great to hear your honesty that this is not perfect and the importance of covering at night. It is inexpensive and will give us in the north a few extra weeks on either end of the season - that is golden and all we can ask for!
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome Scott!! That's exactly why I didn't want an electric or gas heater. The initial cost is crazy!. Then you have operating cost & God forbid it brakes! I am also adding an extra unit this year (building it this week). I am also going to experiment with a timer to let the water sit in the tubes for a bit. Maybe 10 mins on/off & see how it goes. We have a similar climate here in Michigan & even in Summer it gets chilly at night. Keeping it covered is definitely helps. I aim for 78 - 82 & was able to achieve this for the most part except for the long periods of cloudy days. I like a warm pool too. If I can stay 80 or above by adding the 2nd unit I will be very happy! I wanna be in the pool for Halloween!!!😜 I know it's a dream but..... My motto is - Anything for one more day in the pool :) Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend!! #RCInsiders

@@RCInsiders Thanks for the quick reply and well wishes. I did read all the comments and I tend to agree that either a low flow or intermittent flow might work best. I'm no scientist but using the theory of a garden hose sitting in the sun...will get cold quicker with higher flow etc. One question: your first one you used 2 x 100' coils. Now you are going with a new one at 400'. Can I assume you believe that 200' would fit into each 4x4' section? Or what is your configuration? I am thinking I would try as much as would fit - maybe you've done that already? Anyway, any thoughts would be great! And yes, Halloween is a lofty goal but a good one! Cheers

- Lift rate = 7 FT - pump is 1.5FT into the pool( 2 1/2FT above ground) .. exits over the pool edge and down 1FT towards my solar system .. then returns 1FT off the ground, then rises -over a 3FT length- to the pool edge and back into the pool. - my Raypak HTR is even with the pool on the ground - the "IN"line (from the pool towards my system) is 1FT above ground .. same as the "OUT/RETURN" line back to the pool. Can't thank you enough for helping me.

No problem my friend :) So...Unless we're not factoring in any big elevation difference where the heater is set up, it doesn't seem like you are exceeding the lift. My next thought would be blockage or vapor lock. Did you hook up the garden hose and run to ensure you have water flow through the entire system?

So I have had my pool heater up and running for a month. I did use 400 ft of hose and made 2 4x4 units. I bypassed mine with a 1 1/2 shut off that runs to 3/4 pvc using my existing pool pump so no second pump. I did put mine on the roof due to lack of good space in my yard. I also used 1x 4 strips of wood I ripped in half to hold the hose down. I also put some pieces of wood in between the 2 sets of hose to keep them separated so the heat in the box hitting all of the hose and not just the direct sun. I also laid down foil insulation on the bottom and sides and painted the inside black. I keep a 7 to 8 degree difference in the temp of the pool to the water coming out. In the afternoon it can drop to 2-3 degrees higher as the sun moves towards sunset but that still is heating the pool. Last night it went down to the low fifties but I had built my temp up to 86 degrees. This morning it is still 81 degrees and the day will only be 60 degrees but with the solar cover on and the solar heater working I we should be up to 84 again. No way that would happen with just the solar cover. This is a legit heating system. We have had some cool nights in the fifties in Ohio this year but I have kept my pool temp above 80 degrees and have been up to 86 degrees in the pool. I have a pool with 13000 gallons in it. If I had a gas or propane heater it would have been running a lot to keep the temp where I have it. One thing to watch for- if you have a 100 degree day or high nineties be careful turning it on in the middle of the day after the heat has built up. The water is so hot I had my connections start leaking because the water was about 160 degrees coming out and it expanded all my connections even in the heater and I had leaks. These units are heavy but only hard to put up in the spring as gravity helps take them down in the fall. I also installed handles on them. I did buy high quality thick plexiglass so it lasts. Well worth the $395.00 I spent.

Awesome Dennis! I actually swam today, even though we barely hit the 60's in Michigan. With the cover on, we only dropped to 80 on a night in the low 50's. Pump works fine. There are 2 connectors( that had screens in them ) in my 'system', for connecting the 1/2" irrigation pipe to the 5/8" garden hose. Both connectors were 'jammed' with fine dirt, etc. I cleaned them out and took them out for better flow. I flushed each 100' section out, then put it all back together. It barely trickled out back into the pool. Since it's late in the season( here about 3 more weeks to go ), I'll just rely on my gas heater. Next year .. Plan A --> get a bigger pump; Plan B --> integrate/install a 'diverter system' with the pool pump. Again, Mucho Thanks for all your help.

Disney? My dad worked at Disney World about 1970 or '71. And, my brother and I worked on EPCOT in '82. We're all electricians, local 915 in Tampa, living in PA now. I'm going to build one of these for an Intex PureSpa hot tub I'm buying. The water heater is weak in them so, your setup should work well with it. GREAT VIDEO. Thanks.

Awesome Mike! I remember riding around with my Dad (union painter) yelling "RAT" at all the job sites as Disney began breaking the labor unions & started building Disney non union. I ended up with one of the last couple union contractors left at that time, BVCC out of carpenters local 1765 out of Orlando. Good times back then man. Too bad the big mouse had to go the way of most big business. My thing back then was "Organize the South". I lived it & worked it. I made a few of these over the years. I suggest putting the water back into the pool via the skimmer so the water will recirculate and not just heat a small are around the hose. Also, if you can tap the outlet of the pump and not have to use a separate pump, that'd be just as good. Maybe a higher volume of water moving through the heater, would not be as hot going into the pool, but either way, it works.

Awesome! Are you making another one? I went with the submersible for simplicity. Also. I didn't want to run the pool pump constantly to run the heater. You could heat your house or garage all the way through the winter using this same setup. You just need some heat-sinks inside to absorb and re-radiate the heat -- something like concrete floors, or clay benches, to provide thermal mass, with the tubing zig-zagging throughout .

What would really be much more helpful (something that no one really seems to talk about with these diy solar pool heaters) is what kind of results you got on the temperatures in the pool. How much did it raise the temp, over what time period, how big is your pool, what was the ambient temperature, etc. thanks!

Hey D! These are some of the many variables that make solar heating different from gas/heat. Here are some of my experiences: We got our heater running for the first time this year yesterday. The pool water temp in the morning was a disgusting 58 degrees! The outside temp was 59 to start and reached a high 0f 69. There was approximately 3 hours of full sun with the rest of the day being mostly cloudy with some sunny breaks. After 9-10 hours of run time the pool water temp at the end of the day was 64 degrees. This is a 10,000 gallon pool. I am also adding a second unit this year & expect to more easily maintain the perfect (to me!) 80 -82. There were times last Summer during long stretches of sunny days that we didn't run it at all as it was making the water too hot! Pools lose tons of heat overnight and then you have to fight it back into shape again :) I anticipate that the second unit will reduce/eliminate this struggle. When not occupied and especially at night!!, the pool is always covered with a cheap solar cover. This adds a little heat throughout the day and helps a ton with overnight heat loss. I have also been able to produce extremely hot water (140 - 160) by letting the water sit in the unit for a while before kicking on the pump. There are tons of arguments about using timers, but the majority say it's better to heat a lot of water a lower temp than heating a small amount of water at a higher temp. I'm going to experiment with this & decide for myself. Hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by my friend & happy heating! :) #RCInsiders

You're welcome Karron! Up in the north here it's hard to keep the heat in the pool, especially overnight. Every minute that we are not in the pool, it is covered with a solar cover like this - amzn.to/3df4b5f If you live in a warmer climate, you may not want the solar cover. The biggest thing is to keep it covered overnight with either the solar cover or a regular cover. The pool loses tons of heat overnight & then you have to reheat all over again. I am also adding a timer to the outlet this year and will have the pump kick on every 10 - 15 minutes to allow the water to get super warm. With keeping the pool covered & running the solar heater, the pool is always comfortable to swim in. There was a couple times last year when it was hot & sunny for a few days in a row that I didn't run the solar heater at all as it was getting a little too hot :) Thanks for stopping by & hope you have an awesome pool season.Make sure to stop back by & let us know how your project turns out! :) #RCInsiders

Instead of painting the backboard black, you probably should apply some kind of a reflective surface. Any heat/energy that gets past the tubing would be absorbed into the painted wood if it's black. Instead, you really want that energy reflected back into the pipe. There is also no reason to slow the flow of water through the pipe. While it is true that slowing the water increases the final temperature of the water, you run the risk of over-heating the pipe. If you let more water run through the pipe, the temperature rise would be less, but the same amount of energy would be absorbed in the greater volume of water and the same temperature rise in the pool would be achieved. BTW, it would add some cost, but if you were to introduce a small solar-powered pump into the system to move the water through the panel, you wouldn't even need a timer-- if the sun is bright enough to drive the pump, it would be enough to heat the water. ;)
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Is this what you're planning on doing? I have thought about a reflective background, but it is already so hot in the box that I didn't want to end up melting the tubing :) I am completely happy with the heat being produced now. If you go that route, can you stop back by & let us know how it works? I am going to experiment with the timer, but the general consensus seems to lean toward full constant flow. We shall see....😀 Thanks for dropping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders

Hi, Thanks for your video! Two questions: 1. I'm interested in the clear plastic covering that you used (in lieu of plexiglass) in the video. I don't see any links to that. I assume you purchased it at Lowe's or Home Depot. What is that called and how much does it cost for a 4 x 8 sheet? 2. It looked like your initial output temp measurement was made immediately after turning on the pump. I would expect that to be high due to the fact that the sun had been baking the heater (with no water flowing) for quite some time. Have you had a chance to make a similar output measurement after running the water for several minutes (after any initial heating had been dissipated)? Assuming so, what temp difference did you then see? I'm hoping to build something similar, except a tighter coil on 4 x 4 plywood to keep the weight down. Thanks again, John :)

Greetings! Thanks for posting this. I have a couple of questions. I was wondering how long the pump will run before the temp of the output will start to drop. I'm thinking of times I go to my garden hose and turn it on, and it puts out hot water for 15-30 seconds, then turns cold. Certainly the black plastic tubing, in a black box placed in sunlight will provide much more heat. It makes sense that you wouldn't want your flow too high, because the temp would drop faster. Did you check the output temp. after 15 or 20 minutes? It seems a timer would be better, to let the hose fill with pool water, then sit for a bit, then start to pump again. I noticed another comment said a constant flow would be better than bursts of hot water. Would you mind to expand on these thoughts? - Thanks!
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, It's a little like the hose, except you are not feeding the tube with a continuous supply of ice cold water. There are tons of variables that will affect the outgoing temp, with the biggest being direct sunlight. On that day, which was hot & sunny, the temp dropped to 96 in around 15-20 mins, then ran at a constant 88 til we lost sun. I now have 2 units running and on a similar day, it puts out a constant 96 - 100 at peak sun. I also am experimenting a little with the timer. I let the water sit that day for 30 mins & had 149 degree water! So far with experimenting, I think a slow constant flow seems to heat the pool best. But man is cool to see 150 degree water coming from a solar heater you made! :) Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders

Hi Anthony, I don't see any reason not to. Keep in mind that you will be feeding a continuous flow of ice cold water through the heater at a high flow rate. Heating will probably be minimal. If you're not in a hurry to get the pool filled up, I would suggest turning the water on/off every 10 mins or so to allow the water to sit in the heater and warm up. Of course this will double the amount of time it will take to fill the pool.. Once the pool is full, the heater won''t have to fight the supply of ice cold water. I would say experiment with the 10 on/off and see if you like the results. Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders

I'm getting ready to start building this. I have read through a lot of the comments and couldn't see an answer to my question. What are your thoughts on making two 4x4 boxes and having them hinged together so that I can fold in half for easier storage and mobility? I'm bound and determined to prove my husband wrong. That this will heat the pool and be easy enough to move when he is mowing the yard. 😊 The only thing I can think of to do different is to make sure the hose between the two boxes will give enough when I fold them together. I plan on putting a handle on the outside and a small latch to hold them together when moving. Your thoughts?

I love it Mary!! Here are my thoughts: Instead of using a hinge, perhaps make 2 (or more!!) separate units. You could connect them with a length of garden hose when in use. This would greatly reduce the weight as you;re goal seems to be mobility. It is already September and I am still maintaining 82-86, which is just awesome for Michigan! Without the solar unit, we would already of closed for the year. I love the idea & would love to hear your results. Hi James. The black tubing will draw in more heat. I think stacking is a no no. The more surface area that is exposed to direct sunlight the better. I'm not completely sure, but I believe the tubing would hold the better as well. And one thing is for sure, it's a lot cheaper :) For starters, I would figure out a way to not have the hose stacked. If you have a timer, I would set the pump to only kick on every 15 minutes or so to allow the water to sit for a bit. I'm going to try using my Christmas light timer and try a few time intervals til I get the temp I want. Thanks for stopping by and good luck my friend. Hope that helps #RCInsiders

You have the same connector as on the other side right?. the 1/2 inch to Female hose connector. Then you have the other end of the hose cut off and pushed onto the pond pump. I have the same pool as you but smaller version. 18ft×21ft. My question is how long do you keep your pump running? Only during the day or 24/7? Also, how long did/does it take to actually make a difference in the pools temp its self?
@RCInsiders

You are most welcome! I only run the pump during the day, 6-10 hours depending on the sun. It gets cold here at night, so running at night would actually cool the pool. Make sure to keep it covered with a cheap solar cover whenever you're not in it & especially at night. This has made a huge difference. The amount of direct sunlight you get will determine how fast/well it works. On opening day our pool temp was 59. We had 3 nice sunny days in a row & raised the temp to 77 in those 3 days. I have added a second unit this year & often times shut it off as the pool gets too warm for me. I like the pool around 82. I ran the pump yesterday while at work & when got home the pool was 90! Hey Chris, I have actually added a 2nd unit this year & the unit in the video is entering its second season & still making awesome warm water :) Has it been worth it...100%! I have actually been able to enjoy the pool every day for a second year now. I remember how cold & uncomfortable it used to be & now I easily maintain the perfect (to me) 82-85 degrees. I often times unplug the solar unit as it can get the pool too warm for my liking. I left the pump on all day the other day on a 84 degree sunny day & came home from work to a 91 degree pool! After the initial cost of materials, I get to finally enjoy pool season for a few cents a day 😍 Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders

It may be worth a shot to try though if you're almost finished with the heater. If you made the heater with pressure treated wood & then painted it, the rain & water is not an issue. The on;y rel thing we want the cover for is to retain the heat. The cover is screwed down with drywall screws to try to make a seal & to keep it in place. @@RCInsiders I believe Addy is implying the actual temperature reading from the system may not be accurate because the water that is coming out has been in the tubing for quite some time. Addy is also suggesting that waiting enough time to make sure the water coming through has not been in the system for longer than the amount of time to make a complete pass would probably produce a reading that is more accurate.

Hi there - so we built ours Friday and yay sun yesterday, we got it out there and let it bake, the water comes out hot, but only for a minute or two, then turns cool. We used PEX not irrigation tubing and painted it all black... any thoughts? everyone's seems to work, can't figure out what we did wrong. Thanks so much.
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sheril, What is the the outgoing vs incoming temp? If you used the pump in the description, do you have it set to the lowest flow rate? After 5 or so minutes, you will have a temp drop. Depending on outside temp & amount of direct sunlight, I usually maintain a 5 - 15 degree temperature differential throughout the day, lessening as sun strength weakens towards evening, Also, did you cover it with clear plastic or plexiglass? I will look into painted PEX vs irrigation insulation/penetration factors, but I can't see it being a major issue, other than the paint possibly preventing sunlight/heat to enter the tubing. I have also experimented with using a timer for cooler cloudy days to allow the water time in the unit to heat. As long as you are maintaining a positive outgoing temp, you are good as the outgoing water will constantly be heating the water. I also cover the pool with a cheap solar cover at all times when not in use, especially at night as nigh time is when pools lose the most heat. Thanks for dropping by & happy heating my friend :) #RCInsiders

@@sherilsun Hi, So I would definitely not try plastic wrap. Here is a good Plexi alternative - amzn.to/3ggbVXD Also, paint can prevent heat transfer, but only marginally. Hello, There are a lot of variables that will determine how quickly the pool will heat up, with the biggest being amount of time the unit will get direct sun. When we opened the pool this year we had 3 full days in the low 80"s & sunny all day. We were able to get the pool all the way up to 82-84 in those days. We easily maintained those temps all year & often times shut it off as it would get the pool too warm! Here in Michigan the pool season is just about over, but we are still holding on to 76-80. If you live in a warmer climate in the south, you should have plenty of heating time left :) Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend!! #RCInsiders

RC Insiders So, build is nearly complete. Covid has made Plexiglas hard to get, so there is just some plastic sheeting for now. It may be thicker than needed, Matt switch out for something more clear. I was able to do it like a drawer. Is there a East to share pics, or give me your phone # or email address. I’ll text or send them. I’m at about 245 ft of 1/2” pipe. My pump should be arriving today from Amazon. I didn’t want a submersible pump remaining in the pool so I went with an in-line water transfer pump. I’ll try to attach a link. We shall see. Using my 1250g/h pump I use to drain the pool/cover (way more flow that I want, but couldn’t resist testing it out) with an intentional kink in some garden house to return the water I was able to get a sustained rise of 17 degrees. 81 up to 98.

Hey trapfarm There are a lot of variables that affect outgoing temp. Outside air temp, duration of direct sunlight, pump flow rate, length of tubing are a few factors that will help or hurt. Checking the temp after 5 - 10 minutes that day, the outgoing temp was down to 100 degrees. This year I will be adding my Christmas light timer to allow the water to sit in the coils for 5 - 10n minutes before the pump kick on. This will be an experiment as when it gets real hot here, I don't want the pool to get too hot! You could also add more coils if this don't get you where you want to be. Hi, Yes you could do that. There are a few reasons I went with the pump: Simplicity. Plug in the pump and start making warm water. Timer. I wanted the ability to experiment with using a timer to allow the water to sit in the heater for a bit before pumping back in the pool. Pool pump. I didn't want to go through the process of getting all the right fittings to convert and then find out it created too much pressure for the pump. Hey Brent, We are trying to get everything together this week and hope to have the solar heater running by the weekend, or sometime during next week. We were able to keep the pool open til the end of September last year. The time the heater was getting direct sun by that time was severely reduced by that time. During the Summer, I was able to raise the temp 2-5 degrees every day depending on how sunny it was. When the days were long, we were able to maintain 78-82 degrees. As Fall set in, we were still able to 75-79. I am planning on adding a second unit this year to try and squeeze a couple extra weeks. RC Insiders so I have a question. With 200 ft of piping how does a 7.2 ft high pump make it all the way through all the piping and back up the height of the pool wall? I did 100ft of black tubing and have about the same amount of lead hose and return hose from my box and I can’t get the water to flow through it.
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brent, So there has to be an issue somewhere as the pump should have no problem making it through that amount of tube. Did you make sure the flow rate on the pump is adjusted high enough for the system? Did you undo the hose from the heater and run the pump to ensure the pump is working correctly? Also, undo your return hose and see if you have flow coming out of the heater. Basically to check for any blockages in the circuit. After you do all your trouble shooting and determine everything is adjusted & working properly, it could end up being a faulty pump. it's rare, but it happens. Hope this helps & let me know if I can help.

Hi Sarah, I do set the pump at the lowest setting. How much sunlight does the unit get? What state are you in? The biggest thing you can do is keep the pool covered with a cheap solar cover at all times when you're not in it, especially at night. Before I started covering, we were losing 5-10 degrees overnight. Then the solar unit was playing catch up for the better part of the day. As Fall approaches, you will get less direct sun, aka a weaker sun. The more time the water spends in the unit the better. Here in Michigan we are close to the end of pool season :( If my wife would allow me to put the heater on the roof I know I could get a few more weeks LOL. Let me know if I can help with anything. Hi Sarah, I have experimented with the timer with good results. There are competing theories on timers. The general consensus appears to be that you are better off heating a lot of water a little bit, as opposed to heating a little water a lot. But my opinion is that as the sun gets weaker in the Fall, the water is not getting enough time in the unit to heat. I ran continuously through the Summer, but have now switched back to timer & am holding desperately to 82 in the pool :) Days are getting shorter all too quickly, but I'm not closing til I can't keep it over 72!! Hi, It’s 5th Oct. 2023... & just seen your invention ‘Solar Pool Heater’ absolutely fabulous.Could this system work in a colder climate such as Scotland 🤔( not for a pool but shower/ sink ) . I’m looking into such a system for my van whilst touring the country & or rest of UK.? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi, Yes, I would think it could be used this way. I am actually going to build an outdoor pool shower next year using this system. It is solar, so you will need some amount of sunshine to be affective. My thoughts for you would be to fashion some sort of insulated tank to store the warm water during sunny periods until needed. Always wanted to visit Scotland! Hopefully one day :) Thanks for dropping by & have a great day!! @RCInsiders

Great video. I have a 17k gallon pool. Do you believe 200 ft of tubing would heat this pool up at all? Live in NE.

Hi keels, I had pretty good success with this unit last year. I am adding a second unit this year & plan to experiment with a timer to allow the water to sit for a bit in the heater. Maybe 10 min on/off. I think I can fit 3-400" in the unit. The more tubing the better. We have a similar climate. With the solar heater & keeping the pool covered with a solar cover (especially at night!) I was able to keep the pool 78-82 degrees all season. I'm aiming to keep it over 80 all season with the 2nd unit. Without the solar heater, the pool frequently dipped to 70 - 72. I definitely think it will heat it up, but it is solar. On super cloudy days heat out put will be reduced. It will still heat the water somewhat just by the tube being in a hot box, but direct sunlight is key. Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders

RC Insiders I’m going to give it a try with 300 ft and see if I can see a few degrees increase overall in the pool. We are sitting at 72 degrees right now with overcast and low 60s all week. I keep a solar cover on it day and night. Thanks again.

I live in Gran Canaria and will be installing this in my Airbnb villa. This means that I myself am not on site and can monitor. I will set a timer so that the pump only circulates water when the sun is up. But as there is a lot of sun on Gran Canaria, the water will quite quickly reach over 30 degrees. Is there any gadget that can automatically turn off the power to the pump when the water is 30 degrees.

Hi Sven, The only way I can think of is with a temperature switch on the pump that would cut the power at a certain temp. I will look more into this but the ones I'm familiar with cut power when A temp change is detected. We have to find one that is programmable. Thanks for dropping by & happy heating my friend!! #RCInsiders

You had tested it previous to the video. Lol. The second you plugged it in water came out the other side. It would have taken well over a minute for that little pump to get water all through that tubing. I know because I built this but with 1000 ft of irrigation tubing. I have an 19000 gallon pool so I had to scale it up. Good video though. Thanks.

Hi Sammantha, I've been waiting for his reply on this too. I would have to assume that with 1,000' of tubing, he has to be getting some very good results. He's saying he has 5x the tubing and only 2x the size of my pool. I have added a second unit this year and I don't have to run the heater all the time as the pool get too warm. Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend :) #RCInsiders

Does the pump matter as much? I'm thinking if the water pushes through too fast the water will cool the tubing instead of the other way around. My pump runs water about the same rate as a waterhose. What do you think? Should I find a weaker pump?
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rey! So there are competing theories about flow rate & adding timers to allow the water to sit for a bit in the heater. I think the key is to find a happy medium. The pump in the description has an adjustable flow rate which make fining your happy medium much easier. My best advice for your situation would be to get an exact temp reading of the pool water & an exact temp of the water coming out of your heater. If you are getting a couple degrees with that high flow rate you may be ok. You might not be heating the water a ton, but you will be moving a pretty high volume of water at a slightly elevated temp. Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hi GM. I;m thinking there has to be a flow rate that is too high. At some point, the flow rate would make heat transfer difficult/impossible? This is why I think finding the happy medium is important. What do you think? Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend #RCInsiders

If I use a sump pump 1/2 HP instead of a small pump, will it still be able to heat the water up ? Or will the flow and pressure be too much to heat the water?
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Romero. The bigger pump will definitely move the water much faster. You could always add some more coil, or even better, you could add a timer to the outlet & have the pump kick in every 10 minutes or so. This will really allow the water to heat up nicely. Thanks for stopping by my friend and do stop by to let us know how it goes :) #RCInsiders

The timer method is actually less efficient. With a timer you are drastically reducing your volume. Yes the water will come out 120 degrees but 5000 gallons at 94 degrees has a far better heat exchange then 400-500 gallons at 120 degrees when using a timer. The previous numbers are based on 94 degrees = 500 gph pump x’s 10 hrs a day and 120 degree setup = 100 gph pump at 4-5 hours a day on timer. You need to know the total gallons of your pool and how much your heater pump puts out. 1/2 hp with far more coil would be a lot better. If your pool is 10,000 gallons, and your heater puts out 100 gallons per hour, the heater would essentially be fighting a losing battle. With 10,000 gallons I would recommend 1000’ ft of coil with a bigger pump. The structure design of this setup is great but it could have at least double the coil in each 4’x4’ section. And a bigger pump is definitely needed which you can get for around 30$ on amazon. With 1000’ of coil you would not be able to run them in sequence though and would need to have the water “T” off, going to 500’ each section.

Hey Jerry. Great job working out the math! I am adding a second unit that will contain 400' of tube, giving me a total of 600'. I will do some experimenting with the timer & see how it goes. I don't know the exact numbers, but lets say the coil holds 25 gallons of water. Now say I can heat that water to 120 or more evry 10 minutes & run that cycle for 10 hours that's hundreds of gallons of 120 degree+ water. This coupled with having the pool covered with a cheap solar cover should be more than enough to keep a good temp in the pool. Keeping the pool covered at night is the biggest thing as this is when most of heat loss occurs. Thanks for stopping by my friend & happy heating! :) #RCInsiders

RC Insiders there is no advantage in running the pump slowly or allowing the water to spend a long time in the coils. Heat transfers faster the greater the temperature difference. By circulating the water faster, it will be cooler, and pick up heat more efficiently. As above, a large volume of water heated very slightly will ultimately give you much more heat into your pool than a tiny volume heated to a higher temperature.
@RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Spencer, Isn't this theory completely dependent on direct sunlight? Even when there is no sun the inside temp of the box would still be warm and allowing the water to sit for a bit would at least let the water warm a little? Either way, I will experiment with the timer in search of a constant 80-84 degree pool :) Thanks for stopping by & happy heating my friend! #RCInsiders

Do you have a temperature reading of inlet and outlet while it's been running for an hour? Water sitting in the pipe will be very hot just curious what the flow temperature is at how many gpm flow rate.

Hi, Here is the pump I use - amzn.to/33pkhrl This pump has a 10' lift & pumps up to 800GPH At 3 meters this pump may be enough. If you want to go on the safe side, I would go with a pump that has a 20' lift. @RCInsiders
@RCInsiders 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, It has held up well. I keep it covered with a tarp throughout the winter. I actually just got everything set back up yesterday & now starting to heat the pool. There are variables that will determine how long it takes to get up to temp like amount of sun, outside temp & night time temps. Still getting into the 40's and 50's here at night. A good week in the 70's & hopefully 80's & I will have the pool back into the high 70's. 78 is where I am comfortable but easily gets into the mid 80's if I let it when I have guests.
