I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up kzbin.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.

You should consider feeding material on a miter saw from left to right, if you are right handed and right to left, if you are left handed. Also, instead of marking your tool with a sharpie use a stop block with a clamp. The stop block clamp method is safer and consistent, no need to fidget with the material on your mark. Once that is set you can cut dowels of the same size as much as you need.

Great video. If anyone wants to make those lag bolt holes you guys made in the legs to look significantly cleaner, e.g., no visual wood fiber tears, use a 3/4" forstner bit instead of a spade bit when you drill out the recessed space for your lag bolt heads. :-)

21:00 Its much easier to just know the measurement of your circular saw offset and subtract that from your needed material length. Then you don't need to try to hold your saw and the straight edge simultaneously. you can just clamp your straight edge to your pencil line.

It looks like you were holding the dowels on the right side of the blade using your left hand. That puts your left arm in the path of the blade in the event of a kickback, a very real possibility cutting those large dowels.

Maybe he does not use power tools that often while the guy that used it in the video does all the time. One of use is not going to cause damage daily or even once a week will cause damage or usage for an extended period such as for an hour. The user has to make that decision and if they are ok with the risk then it is their decision.

No benefit of doing so. The hardware prevents them from moving.

The unglued dowel is replaceable. If, for example, the bench is dismantled and reassembled (e.g. for relocation to a new workshop), any damage to the screw hole is really easy to remedy by using a new piece of dowel.

I have a workbench with a torsion top and would love to hear some ideas on how to work without dogholes. I have a vise at the end which is fine for my smaller tasks but for longer work pieces I'm always trying to come up with creative clamping. My bench also has drawers in the center that go all the way down to the lower stringer, blocking my ability to use holdfasts.

Pat, I'm giving away some of part 2, but in building our torsion top we ran two center supports the length of the top (good for torsion control an solidity) and placed them so that our dog hole row could be drilled through one of the supports. Voila, a "solid" top.

This seems like more work than a mortise and tenon. I suppose it is easier to get a strong joint this way as people are more accustomed to using hardware to join wood.

I had a set of the threaded spade bits and put them away. They grab way to hard and with a hand held drill can injure your wrist easily. An idea that wasn't necessary.

Those spade bits are for contractors where it is all about speed and 1/16ths don't matter. Hard to believe these guys don't have a proper set of Forstner bits

lujon Yep, really about fast holes through the lumber, not clean holes. For clean holes you use either a forstner or a normal spade bit (no screw thread) so it doesn’t drag the bit through. Not the only thing odd about this production.

Uh, a "torsion box-like" workbench. Torsion boxes typically have a grid of beams on the inside - I mean just google the term. Really like the tip on the oak dowels to strengthen the lag bolt connection. If you guys are going to hold yourselves out as teaching woodworking, using terms carefully will help your audience.

Short add-on answer: In Germany there no offer for dado-blades. The main reason is: The arbors of the tablesaws are to short for mounting dadoblades in it. Yes, you can import dadoblades. But for what? You can't mount it. And if the arbor would be long enough, the dadoblades have the wrong inner diameter. Here we have metric 30mm (in most of the saws) and the dados are in inch. So the bird is eaten by the cat. :-(

You don't need a router table, just a straightedge and a router will work. That's how I did it until I got a dado stack. Still have all my fingers!
