Heres a breakdown of how we setup our Blackmagic Pocket 4k to use v-mounts. We chose to go with the under mounted v-mount so we still had access to the primary display.

Nice set-up with the tucked away V-mount. For shooters closer to 40 than 20, I highly recommend a 7" monitor for your studio/cinema rig. The extra heft and $$$ is more than made up for the with extra speed and focus/exposure accuracy gained on shoots.

Love the setup, save a lot of space and it doesn't block the screen. Also, has lower gravity and should be quite stable when handheld. I got a core base battery which as a quick release on it. I didn't use the reel, I mount it on the tilta cage with camvate quick release plate and clamp. And Tilta mini focus as a follow focus, as i did not have the larger cine lens, I use converted vintage photos lens, the diameter of the lens barrel is small, even after install follow focusing gear. ( still waiting for the gears, hope they work well with Tilta mini focus!!!)

Hey so sorry for the late reply, we somehow missed this! According to BM they told us there shouldn't be an issue with powering both the camera and the monitor through a single V-mount battery as long as the monitor and camera are powered in sequence vs at the same time. I've heard some horror stories of HDMI ports getting fried but so far for us we've had no issues with our two pockets being powered this way. NP-F batteries are not unreliable. I've been powering one of my BMPCC4Ks since the beginning of this year with nothing but an NP-F battery system and they have been as reliable as my V-lock on my other BMPCC4K. Using one NP-F970 + in-camera Canon LP-E6N, I get four hours of continuous shooting in 4KDCI. You can build a much lower profile setup and save some weight by using NP-F batteries, and have the ability to easily hot swap while on the go (if you decide to use smaller NP-F batteries).
@threefoldtv
@threefoldtv 4 жыл бұрын
Us saying they are unreliable isn't totally accurate, we used NPF batteries for some time (check out our older videos) and they do work great and definitely way better than the LPE6 batteries but we did have some occasional problems with battery plates failing on us. For us gauging the remaining battery capacity was a pain since most of our NPF batteries did not have battery indicators on them ( and we didn't want to re-invest in purchasing a bunch of new npf batteries that did have capacity indicators) and the other big factor was powering both the pocket and our BM5 monitors really drained NPF batteries much faster. We certainly are not hating on NPF as we still use them for many pieces of equipment, we just decided to move to v-mount so that all of our cameras ran off the same battery system, and so we could gain the extra battery capacity. NPF are still a great power solution for the pockets and do cut down on weight.
@AustralianImage
@AustralianImage 4 жыл бұрын
@@threefoldtv For sheer endurance the V-lock option is clearly the best choice, but you do pay a price with sheer size and weight. I've considered the new nano V-lock batteries, but even they aren't that small or light given the capacity, with the only advantage being 14.8V output. As for indicators, I'm pretty happy with the battery gauge on the BMPCC4K, the updates provided this year give a much better indication than previously. For those who want a reasonable compromise between size and weight, and the ability to place a battery pretty much anywhere, the NP-F option is still perhaps the best solution (in my opinion) and much better than the power banks that some advocate. And, as I mentioned in another of your videos, I hand hold one of my rigs for hours on end and the lower profile that the NP-F solution affords just can't be beat.

@threefoldtv
@threefoldtv 4 жыл бұрын
We had heard about these issues, which is why we contacted Blackmagic asking there input on the subject. There direct response was "It should be fine to power both a Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and your monitor from the same power source. The crucial factors are powering the devices in sequence, as opposed to simultaneously, and ensuring the HDMI cable between both devices is connected prior to powering the units on." We have been powering all or pockets using v-mounts for quite a while and have never had any issues.
@Lauryyno
@Lauryyno 4 жыл бұрын
Threefold thank you. So basically if the hdmi cable is connected, then you can safely turn on camera and a few seconds later turn on the monitor. But I see there is room for human error. Normally I do not transport camera with hdmi connected so if somehow I would turn on the camera and monitor (one after another) and only then connect cable it might burn and damage the camera? Well I personally do rent my camera occasionally, this sounds risky tbh.

NPFs are not reliable? Didn`t have any isues so far. Advantage of NPFs: just 1/3 weight/size of V-batteries. I´m still able to use a gimbal (battery on monitor). Runtime is of course 3 or 4 times lower than V-mount. V-mount is good for shoulder or tripod stuff. I love Smallrig and this solution with thinner V-battery is very smart.
@threefoldtv
@threefoldtv 4 жыл бұрын
I guess "unreliable" probably isn't the right word. We've never had any major issues with NPF and it definitely cuts down on the weight. The main reason we switched away was we were having some issues with the NPF plate adapters, and the NPFs we have don't have battery life indicators on them so its can be a bit harder to know how much battery life you actually have left. But NPF do work good and are a much better solution than using the LPe6 batteries. We actually have a very similar build to the one in this video but instead of V-mounts it uses NPF batteries. If you havn't seen that video you can check it out here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGGtZWmMrb57idka

We've had a handful of them die on us and they are naturally a lower operating voltage, so depending what you're powering they can be at "0%" even tho there is still 30-40% left on the battery but they are displaying at 0% because the operating voltage has dropped to much. We still use NP batteries all the time, they certainly aren't bad but with v-mounts costing $200-$300 they should be more reliable.

Dang that sucks to hear, were you using a d-tap splitter or some other sort of power distribution (v-mount plate)? Do you know if it was because of powering on simultaneously?

@@threefoldtv So guys, can we run the same rig as you, BMC confirmed it's fine?

According to the the support agent at blackmagic I talked to... yes. Although I have no doubt people have had some hdmi ports fried, which sucks. Personally we've never had any issues and have been powering 2 pocket cameras with monitors using v-mount batteries for quite a while.

Which matte box is that

It's the PolarPro Basecamp, super awesome mattebox! Only downside is that it takes their proprietary filters, but other than that we've been happy with it.

Have you tried this v-mount battery with the bmpcc? www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1416942-REG/core_swx_pbe_bmpc4_powerbase_edge_small_form.html My friends who own one all run it off this. Curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks

Sadly, it appears Small Rig is no longer making part 2039 (the quick release system). If you wanna build this rig, I suggest you buy that part as quickly as possible from any camera store that still has them in stock, since once they're gone, they're probably never coming back.

@joelmulder
@joelmulder 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tonymalon Not as far as I've found. I've also talked to SmallRig, but it doesn't sound like there's gonna be anything similar released in the future. One thing I did before switching to V-mount batteries was using a large NP-F battery on my monitor, and then taking a 12V cable from that battery into the camera. Worked fine, although I prefer my current V-mount on rails behind the camera solution.

@dannysong
@dannysong 4 жыл бұрын
Power on each device that's connected to the v-mount one at a time instead of all at the same time. For example, turn the camera on first, then turn the monitor on, then the next device, etc.
