might want to explain why the first mark for your studs is shorter than the others. Not 16 on center because the sheet goods is fully covering the stud at the corner. Some folks dont pick up on that. Great job sir. keep it up.

If you use a framing square as opposed to the speed square you would eliminate the steps of marking the X and putting the mark 3/4 from 16” OC because the framing square has a center hole in it that you put on your 16” OC mark which you can then scribe both sides of the framers square with your pencil, leaving you with two lines 1-1/2” apart where you will place your studs!

@@TheExcellentLaborer yes it will. The manufacturer home deal went great, except that the home seller business wanted to charge me $20,00.00 for a dirt pad. I have silt loam dirt, which is the best. I called off the deal, got my refund back and told my wife I'll build us a home. She agreed.

Tip your top and bottom plates on the 1.5" side...drive an 8 in to hold the boards, then follow this instruction. Why on the 1.5.... when you frame...you will have your marks on the side that is easier to read. where do you frame that you don't use wall bucks or L - buck or H buck... Very concise for the DIY guy and gals.. P.S. ALWAYS PULL YOUR TAPE... LEFT TO RIGHT

Hi there The Excellent Laborer, thanks for making an informative video. The only thing that I think ought to have been mentioned is to crown your lumber plates up towards the sky if marking them on the side so that they don't see-saw while you are marking them. The same mention should be made for the studs you place in between the plates with the crowns uniformly being placed in one direction (typically up to the sky if laying them out on the deck). Built many houses and have marked exactly 16 and Back or away depending and no issues. Has this always been a thing? I get stuff falls 2,4,6,8,etc but worsts is you would need one nailer. But we never had issues and allot of times the take off could be where first stud for structural wall at say 8 1/4 then 16 and away or back

I'm still a little unsure about the exterior wall stud, where you came in 4 inches. Can you explain that a bit more or have a visual?

I would like a clarification on this too. I think it is because when you place the intersecting exterior wall you will want to nail the stud at the end of it, to the frame of the first wall. Placing that stud 4" in on the first wall gives the nail joining the 2nd, intersecting, exterior wall something to secure into. Also, I want to know what the Excellent Laborer was doing with the pipe wrench and the hammer as he was nailing the studs in. I tried to look at it carefully, but am not sure. Thanks!

I found the answer in another comment. He came in 4 inches so that he would have a "nailer" that he could nail the edge of the drywall board into, at a later stage. In the comment he said that he thought it was better to do it at this stage, rather than later.

Dumb question here. Say you're framing an 8 foot section. Then your studs will be at 16, 32, 48, 64, 80 and 96 OC. Since that last stud is at 96 OC if you put it on center it would extend 3/4" past the top and bottom plates. In that case do you shift the stud back 3/4" so that it stays flush within the top and bottom plates?

An extremely important factor that I have yet to see any KZbinr Home Builder show us, or explain to everybody, is the proper height of those wall studs for an 8’, or 10’, or 12’ tall wall height! If we use treated lumber for the wall studs, (for termite-free and worry-free aspects), those boards are not cut like conventional kiln-dried wall studs. They would need to be cut shorter, to fit between the bottom plate and the double top plate of the wall section, to be an even 8’, 10’, or 12’ total height. So, for an 8’ tall wall height, the wall studs should be 91.5” (to take into account, the three 2”x4”s width (4.5”) deducted from 8’ (96”), in order for the 4’x8’ sheathing to completely cover that wall). A 10’ wall would require the wall studs to be cut down to 115.5”, and cut down to 139.5” for a 12’ wall height! Just sayin’!

Nobody build walls out of pressure-treated. That is why they are not pre-cut the length. I’m not sure why anybody would want to build a whole house out of pressure treated lumber. That’s something to look into. Thanks for watching!

Great observation! A 2 x 4 is an inch and a half thick and 3 1/2 inches wide. It’s been that way for years. I think it’s 2 x 4 before it is dried out. And then it shrinks down

Great question Javier! Depends on the location. The house I build in the beginning of this channel was built for $110,000 (counting the property it was on) and sold for $220,000.
