I see people using 1x8 and 1x10, and here it looks like you are using 1x12… do the footprint dimensions not matter as much as the hole size/ovalness? I have some really nice bark slabs from my sawmill and I could make my boxes look like a log on the outside with milled lumber insides… but I need to know how wide to cut the boards.. should I make them 10 inches, 12, 14, 20? I can make em any size…. I got some wild ducks that found my newly dug and even newerly filled pond, I want them to stick around, raise a family and help bring the pond to life!

I would say 1x10 would be my minimum, that would be about 80 square inches on the inside. We prefer 1x12, but either should be fine. The whole size is important as well, we do a 3”x4” oval and that is large enough to allow woodys in and keep bigger predators out. I installed another 25 boxes last month and will be installing more soon.

@@G2GO_outdoors thankyou, I already got one log box started, made the hinge part for the door look like a wedge-cut for dropping trees, it’s turning out really nice so far, trying to find the perfect slab for the front so I can hog out one of the knot holes or branch collars to make the 3x4 oval opening

I'm too lazy and ill equipped. Used plastic mailboxes, screw gun, pocket knife, and baling wire. PVC pipe over a t-post. Pine straw bedding is best.😉👍
