I've built a board at tombalek myself and we put an oil finish as a protective coating, but ever since i've dinged up my board and re-cut it to a different shape leaving the sides of the board exposed to bare wood. I've done a paintjob and grip tape on the top. Was considering to add another layer of lacquer to the bottom to waterproof it a little more, do you think this is necessary? And will the Pylox brand spray lacquer at Home-fix work?
@LinnysWorkbench8 жыл бұрын
Yep, lacquer will make the wood waterproof. Pylox brand's lacquer works fine.

Duuuuuuudde, the orange wheels look like a thousand bucks! Very nice pick! I'd choose a different wood but otherwise liked your video very much. By the way I'm not familiar with the spray grip, does it wear out? if so, how often do you need to reapply it?
@LinnysWorkbench7 жыл бұрын
The spray grip i use is pretty durable. It's mostly used for bathroom floors as it can be slippery. It's been almost half a year since then and the grip is still there. I'd recommend another type of spray grip called lucid grip, made specifically for spraying skateboard decks.

I ride a longboard myself, a Sector 9 Lacey to be precise. Loving how this initiative or workshop is available for people in SG! Always dying to try making my own board. Whats ur board measurement?
@LinnysWorkbench8 жыл бұрын
Hi there, my board measures around 115cm long, and 24cm wide. It's a little bit on the longer side, as i'd like more room for dancing.
beautiful board ! Well made (beautiful logo). bring a new step and make it electric with 2 motors fast and powerful for steep hills (and great brakes), huge battery exchangeable in 1 click and... foldable so you can bring it into airplanes when travelling into your backpack.

Good suggestion! I might make an electric one in future!

how much it will cost to buy a longboard dancer deck to Europe? I can`t find from where to buy in Europe or here everything is so overpriced !
@MitchC00kie7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you think of as overpriced, but there are plenty of dancers available, also in Europe. I'm sure that a simple Google search for skateshops in your country will provide you with plenty of options to choose from.

Sad to see you put spray on grit on such a nice board.. a sheet of clear griptape is like $10.. hows it holding up?
@LinnysWorkbench7 жыл бұрын
It's been almost a year since i've built it and its still pretty rough! I used a rather good quality one and since i don't drag my feet on the board too much, it lessens the eroding of the grip. I'd rather spray on a clear grip than paste grip tape on it as it'll cover up the beautiful wood under it.
@FelixgreenYT7 жыл бұрын
RealityCrafts You made an awesome board so do as you please my man. The clear grip comes out pretty transclucent, I like clear grip to put pictures underneath!
@florindacorser49748 жыл бұрын
hi there i was just wondering what difference it would make applying fiberglass to the top and bottom instead of in between layers?
@sal123ps37 жыл бұрын
Florinda Corser if it where on top it would get damaged and also fiberglass breaks down in the sun so it would eventually break

all of these diy longboard videos are cool and all but why does everyone insist on making them ridiculously thick? use stronger wood and less of it. it'll make the board lighter and easier to tote around places where you can't skate.
@Naomi-rf1bl6 жыл бұрын
In order to get good flex, professional companies usually use 7 plys of veneer, which is an extremely thin wood. Their wood is probably just a little too thick. Plus, most people who make these are woodworkers, not skaters.
@papersya8674 жыл бұрын
to be honest, this longboard doesn’t look too thick to me. that’s just my opinion though. i haven’t been skating for too long, not as long as a lot of skaters in my area at least, who have been skating for around 3+ years

you forgot to add concave to the deck. concave is really essential, especially for cruising at a bit higher speeds or riding in rain.
@LinnysWorkbench8 жыл бұрын
Actually there is a slight concave on the deck. I guess the camera did not capture it well.
@BryceKimball7.38 жыл бұрын
Auke why is concave essential while riding in the rain?
@t-rex26458 жыл бұрын
because the top of the board will lose a lot of it's grip when it gets wet. So then you're basically standing on a slippery wet piece of wood.(phrasing lol) and then you can really use concave to stay on to board (because concave will generally help locked in your feet due to it's shape.
@lucas-cl8eq8 жыл бұрын
Auke i isnt geting slipery if you have a regular deck with griptape but concave helps a bit

really nice work, although the fibreglass isnt very effective.
@LinnysWorkbench8 жыл бұрын
Fibreglass makes the board a little more springy, and will prevent delamination. Although i should try carbon fiber instead since it's stronger than fibreglass.
@michiderkinderen76338 жыл бұрын
I also like the springy effect of fibreglass. But fiber is most effective on the top and bottom of the board (sadly, it would destroy your nice wood finish, so the best Option would be to put a thin veneer as a top layer). Also, woven fibreglass isnt as nice and effective as straight, one-directional ( 0°, put on the bottom to regulate flex) or two-directional (+/-45°, put on top AND bottom to prevent torsion) fibre. Carbon fibre is nice to get stiff boards, it doesn't provide a nice flex like fibreglass. You shouldn't worry about delamination between wood layers if using epoxy (be sure to wash out oily wood with thinner). Have a nice weekend!
@LinnysWorkbench8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Very useful info.
@MeesDeppe_Official8 жыл бұрын
400 grit wasn't necesary. 200 would have been enough. when you apply lacquer, the fibres of the wood will expand so you're going to have to sand it again anyway for the second layer. just a tip
@LinnysWorkbench8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I guess it's just a habit of mine to sand my woodworking projects up to 400 to remove all the fine scratches.
