Very nicely done project, can you please tell me what is that "vegetable cloth" that you put in the box? Is it same as shade cloth and if not, then does it have drainage function? Do you also paint the interior of the box with the paint sealer for waterproofing?

Good question . Yes you can use any wood ; however ; you need to make sure that you seal and protect your wood with wood sealer once you are done so that your planter box must not Rot. Happy building . Let me know know how yours turns out .
