Hahaha that sounds tempting and I bet making your own tank is a whole lot cheaper than buying one ... here in the uk fish tanks are ridiculously priced and I mean ridiculous for example a tank this size you would pay a good £300 I paid £359 for a 65 gallon tank ....
@ReefAmorous

Exactly you can have it the way YOU want it and not the way some crappy manufacturer has made .... this was a very inspiring video and I know one day I will attempt to make my own even if it's only a 10 gallon I will eventually try it .... who knows maybe in the near future I'll be building one on your standard I especially liked the double glass bottom and the steel to reinforce it all .... 🤗🤗 you got my thumbs up for sure

Just use acrylic glass... And by the way this aquarium in video will crack at the the center of the bottom when filled with water because there is a space of air between the glass and the surface on which aquarium stands because of steel by the perimeter of the bottom of aquarium.

@@ReefAmorous No I did not see. But this is simple physics, this glass will burst sooner or later, and it’s bad if at the most unexpected moment. Or do you want to say that you made a substrate under the glass between the steel corners? If there is a substrate, then it may not burst.

the second sheet of glass you add to the bottoms its seem you just add more thickness wall to the bottom that means 10mm+10 mm =20 mm for bottom thickness, but there is good way to use ring strips support under the bottom it can be glass or wood or steel doesn't matter for example if you using 4 rings every 30 cm now your bottoms = L1+L2+L3+L4 means every L = 30 cm of length witch can resist pressure 4 time then your design and not this much cost

interesting build. Gluing two pieces together seems odd when a 12mm piece would work fine . Silicone bonds better to glass than it does to stainless steel, so i dont believe that it is a better joint. i have worked with aquariums my whole life, and have never seen this method before. i would advise caution if building a tank this way!
@ReefAmorous
@ReefAmorous 7 жыл бұрын
two pieces together makes 90 angle degree, the silicon bonds with two edges with walls the stainless steel makes extra support from out side and it's not related to joint the glasses together. Thanks for watching

why not use 12mm tempered glass. gets the same strong bottom. reinforce with cross braces, to hold the atmospheric pressure.

Yeah i wonder if the pieces of metal on the underside are not more of a problem them a help. dow he does has 2 layers , but the whole underside is just floating instead of resting on what ever surface you put it on
@Luckingsworth
@Luckingsworth 5 жыл бұрын
@@febeomnibeepboop6367 That's how nearly every single tank I have ever seen is. Resting the tank itself on the glass is asking for trouble. Almost always I see a base that is what the tank rests on. If extra support is needed it is braced. Otherwise the perimeter is sufficient.

So the bottom top section leaves only the same gap as the glass sides and ends ie 10mm?? Maybe you should have had it cut 1-2mm smaller as recommended by the silicon manufactures?? Also glass cutters normally will give you a cutting tolerance which is normally +/-2mm. By having the top section of the bottom cut to 10mm you risked there being a 2+ which of course would give you a 2mm over hang of the sides and ends from the bottom. But it worked for so all's well. Also a 12mm bottom would have given you a 20% increase in strength MIN at the points you require it the most ie: point of glass contact with the sides and ends. You could then if you wish to go OTT pop another 10mm on top of that but its really down to the builder. But nice video.

I am confused why the base glass does not have a uniform layer of silicone spread between it and the next base glass sheet placed on top of it? it would create a fully laminated Base glass panel and be very strong. With these splodges of silicone to bond both sheets as in the video, there is now air gap between these panes of glass between the splodges of silicone, so it is nowhere near as strong as laminating with a complete silicone layer method. I understand the reason behind the steel outer sections, it basically mimics what Jewel and Fluval, Rena etc do with a plastic brace.

Like you, I always find it best to lift heavy glass sheets with open toed sandals on.

I want to ask, is it ok to put the side panels above the lower base(the base panel) design with a 80x50x50, 4mm glass and with no braces and no supports and just with only panels??
@ReefAmorous
@ReefAmorous 3 жыл бұрын
Its ok to put the side panels above or beside. But its NOT ok to make 80x50x50 with 4mm thickness, at least you need 8mm for this dimension

@@ReefAmorous oh okk thank you for the information, I want to ask one more question, is there a way to strengthen it other than putting braces on top of it??
@ReefAmorous
@ReefAmorous 3 жыл бұрын
The only way is to use the correct thikness for your dimensions, i would recommend to go with 10mm

Design made sense until the steel bezels. The problem with that becomes dried silicone interrupting your seem between the glass layers. A step left out that I'd recommend, scrape the living heck out of the bottom of that tunnel to ensure there is absolutely no silicone there. Then from the end of your video, I'd recommend waiting another 24-48 hours, then sealing the joints with silicone. I'd bet this tank wasn't left like this prior to adding water. If it was, how long did it hold water?

Thank you for your comment, I assure for you that was no silicone left before adding the side panels, also for sure there was more than 24 hours before adding the side panels as will. Anyway this tank was running for almost 2 years before I shut it down and. Moving to my home country. Please check this video for the same tank kzbin.info/www/bejne/fneVqIWlmd6EnrM

@@ReefAmorous That's impressive. After the end of this video did you silicone the joints as well? Or was that just with silicone on the seams between the glass? That is thick glass, so I can see how the tunnel could hold it in place with the bezels if that is the case. Very interesting.

I have a question.. when you are fitting the sides on.. I did not see you putting any silicone on the edges of the sides before butting them together.. evidently you must have to..and also... what is the brand name of the silicone tube that you are using? or is it just average silicone? thx
