Love this. You could use an old crockpot or double boiler and melt 2 parts paraffin to one part bees wax. Brush it on the duck cloth using a natural bristle paint brush. Use an old iron or a heat gun to run over the fabric to make sure wax is well distributed and absorbed into the fabric. The waxed canvas will be water resistant and make it great for outdoor use..

That’s a great idea. Looks easy to make. A small suggestion: it is advisable to round over the edges where the fabric contacts and the woods on the seating area.

I had one of these when I was younger...until the UV destroyed the fabric. Glad to have stumbled on this video...now I have to dust off the old sewing machine and see if I can make it work...these would look great around our firepit and backyard movie setup!

Built this type of chair several years ago. Made mine with shoulder straps (like a back pack has) mounted on the outside rails of the seat back and made entire chair wide enough so that in the sitting position, (the chair) it can be worn as a pack frame with the seat acting as the pack frame platform. I could put a cooler or whatever else I wanted on the frame (seat) going to and from where I wanted to sit.

Curious if you'll be doing a gas strut build that doesn't involve welding? Like the one in your first rooftop tent build. I'm also wondering if four gas struts could accomplish the box style rtt if positioned correctly, rather than doing a hinge like build. Thanks! Absolutely love the channel!

@Patrick what are your thoughts on cedar instead of pine? Do you think it would be strong enough? Definitely an added cost, but was thinking about the wet/dry durability in the long term. Not to mention cedar smells awesome, even after it ages. Great channel - I'm also going to try the 270 awning for my 4Runner.

Cedar is way too soft and isn't strong enough! Just use a finish on it and it will stay plenty durable!

Oak is a more dense wood and can hold a heavier weight but has a slightly higher cost. Pine will be lightweight and cheaper but you sacrifice weight capacity. 2 - 8’ x 1.5” x 3/4” [2438mm x 38mm x 19mm] (A lumber) 9.92 ea 3 - 36” x 1.5” x 1/2” [914mm x 38mm x 13mm] (B lumber) 4.98ea (4’) 36 - 1 1/4” deck screws [32mm] 5.48 (50) 84 if creating wood back chair 12 - 1/2” lathe screws [13mm] 5.98 (100) Canvas duck fabric - 48” x 21 1/2” [1219mm x 546mm] Cut lumber A 2 - 38” - for seat back legs (A.1) [965mm] 2 - 27 1/2” - for seat legs (A.2) [698mm] 3 - 16” - for cross bracing on seat back (A.3) [406mm] Cut lumber B 6 - 16” for seat of chair (B.1) [406mm] If you don’t want to fool with canvas back, you will need 6 additional B lumber pieces cut at 16” [406mm] (will create 12 additional slats) (C.1) See Alternative Seat Back instructions at end of the plans for instructions. Make your marks * Take lumber A.1 * Measure from bottom up 7” [178mm] on the “front” side and make a mark on both A.1 pieces on the 3/4” [19mm] side * Measure from bottom up 10 1/4” [260mm] on the “back” side of the 3/4” [19mm] side Brace the back * Take one A.3 piece and align bottom edge to the 7” [178mm] mark on lumber A.1 and flush to the sides. (Front side) * Drill 2 pilot and countersunk holes on each side and attach (add glue for additional strength) * Take second A.3 piece and align bottom edge to the 10 1/4 [260mm] mark and flush to the sides. (Back side) * Drill 2 pilot and countersunk holes on each side and attach (add glue for additional strength) * Take third A.3 piece and align to very top edge and flush to the sides of back side * Drill 2 pilot and countersunk holes on each side and attach (add glue for additional strength) * You can glue small pieces to the bottom edge of this third piece to help prevent your fingers from being smashed when assembling final chair * This is now called Frame.A Making the seat * Take pieces A.2 and B.1 * Space A.2 pieces at 12 1/2” [318mm] apart (inside) * Align first piece of B.1 to top with 1” [25mm] overhang on each side * Drill 2 pilot and countersunk holes 1 3/8” [35mm] on each side and attach (add glue for additional strength) * Align additional B.1 pieces 1/2” [13mm] and repeat previous two steps until all 6 are attached * This is now called Frame.B Angle the feet * Create the angle of the feet to help chair keep stable * It is best to watch the video for this explanation * Take Frame.B piece * On opposite side from seat slats Mark 5/8” [16mm] down and then 1” [25mm] back * Connect these marks and remove corner material * Measure same on same side on other end of the leg and remove corner material * Take Frame.A piece * Make the same measurements as before on bottom and back side of Frame.A and remove corner material * The back side has two braces on that side Creating the canvas back * Take your canvas fabric piece and fold in half to create a piece that is 24” x 21 1/2” [610mm x 546mm] * Create Mark on 21 1/2” [546 mm] sides at 2 1/2” [64mm] in * Fold over the 21 1/2” [546mm] sides to these marks and sew at 3/8” [10mm] then at 3/4” [19mm] * This will create a double stitched 1 1/4” [32mm] hem on both sides * Fold over remaining open end 1” [25mm] and create the same double stitch as above * At top fold edge, stitch double stitch to match other three sides. Do not fold this side over * This fabric should now be 23” x 19” [584mm x 483mm] Attaching the Canvas * Take Frame.A piece and lay on its back * Remember, the back has the two cross braces * Align canvas 1 1/2” [38mm] from top * Fold canvas over one edge of the frame and align with back edge * Attach with lathe screws spaced about 4 1/2” [114mm] apart * Repeat on opposite side * You have completed the chair pieces now! Congratulations! Assembly * To assemble, slide seat legs through lower braces below canvas back * Have a seat and enjoy your handy work Storage * Remove seat bottom from canvas back * Rotate back around * Slide seat legs down body between braces * Friction will hold it together ALTERNATE SEAT BACK * Instead of using canvas, use pieces C.1 to create a wood back * Align first piece to top front edge and flush with sides * Drill 2 pilot and countersunk holes on each side and attach (add glue for additional strength) * Repeat with remaining pieces spaced 1/2” [13mm] apart These plans we made based off the KZbin video by Patrick Remington. I just finished one up but I wish I would have drawn it up first just to make things a little more clear in my head before starting out. 1 1/2 x 3/4 x 8 feet (x2) 2 x 38 inches 2 x 27 1/2 inches (spaced 12 1/2 inches apart inside mesurement) 3 x 16 inches (spaced 7 inches and 10 1/4 inches) 1 1/2 x 1/2 x 3 feet (x3) 6 x 16 inches (for seat bottom) Deck screws #8 x 1 1/4 inch stainless (45 piece box) Lath screws #8 lath screws stainless (12 pieces) Corner notches are 5/8 x 1 inch Fabric back is 24 x 21 1/2 inches prior to finishing (1 1/4 inch hem) Fabric back is 23 x 19 inches finished
