In this video, I show how I build a shop-made oval cutting jig for your router. This is for use in an upcoming project where I needed to cut an elliptical top for a table.

That is one rugged looking oval jig. Better being over built, than under built. Nice job Brian, and thanks for sharing.

@@Benham_Design actually I'm old-school, I'm trying to mimic the Polk C4 enclosure from the 90's that has four 6x9's mounted isobaric/bandpass enclosure!

@Benham_Design 2 жыл бұрын
Nice, you might have to scale this jig down to the bear minimum size to get it to cut a 6x9 but the principal would be the same on a palm sized router.

Post-it Notes and playing cards make good shims to add a touch of consistent clearance when setting/cutting track parts and many other cutting process of meshing parts. Got them scattered all over the shop. By the way. These are eclipses, ovals are an egg shape.

@@Benham_Design you will fine most woodworkers use 'ellipse'. and is the type of oval that this jig creates so 'ellipse jig' . Use that as a search term and you will get more hits.

I don't and I have zero interest in contemplating how to do woodworking with less tools. I made stuff, sold it, used that money to buy tools so I could make stuff more efficiently, so I could sell More stuff to buy more tools.

Hi what is the relation between the distance of the holes and the length and width of the oval? I am building a 180x90 cm table and i am trying to figure it out?
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design Жыл бұрын
The math is pretty simple. Find the center of your work piece. put the jig on the center Measure to 90cm put you pivot block in the center of the jig on the perpendicular axes. Then swing the arm 90 degrees measure from the center to 45 cm Then put your pivot block in the hole that is in the center of the jig going perpendicular.

Everyone has videos on how to build it but nothing as to how to set it for the correct x and y.
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design Жыл бұрын
That's because there is not much to talk about. If you want a 24x36 oval. Measure from the center on the x out 12" and on the y out 18". Which is half your 24x36. Position the center of the jig on the center point. Line up your router in the 12, and drop your pin into the hole that rides the y, the. Swing it around and line up your router to the 18 mark and drop your pin in the block that rides in the x slot and you are ready to go.

How do I know what size jig I need for the particular size table I will make. I am considering a 72x36 or possibly a 78x40 oval. Any tips for sizing the jig?
@basedcase
@basedcase 2 жыл бұрын
I think the difference between the major and minor axis is limited by the size of the base. Max difference is roughly half the size of the base.
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure you would have to go double but close to it. You could still add a lot of length to the swing arm before have to add to the base
@basedcase
@basedcase 2 жыл бұрын
@@Benham_Design since I need a very large ellipse, up to 11'10'' foot major & 9'10'' minor, I think I will just use a router to make the channels. I'm guessing the base would need to be a little over 1' by 1'.
@Benham_Design
@Benham_Design 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, unless you are good at geometry to work out an equation, a bit of trial and error is in your future. Let me know how it works out.
@basedcase
@basedcase 2 жыл бұрын
@@Benham_Design the equation is easy. X²/a² + y²/b² = 1. A is half an axis and b is half of the other axis.

I downloaded the oval cutting jig plans. I have a Bosch MR23EVS. The D - Bracket page 4 does not line up ,vertically. The bottom of the bracket sits about 3/16th inch above the bolt holes on the router. Has anyone encountered this and identified a fix. Thanks Steve

With my oval jig and also with trammels for cutting circles I drill a 3/4 hole in the end of the swing arm base and then I can use any plunge router with a 3/4” guide bushing installed along with a straight bit. John Jensen from British Columbia
