Can't imagine that lack of shims is gonna hold up once some flower pots are sitting on there. No one is standing on it, but lots of us put fairly heavy things on window sills. This is the kind of work that makes people hate track homes. Good tips on lining it up and measuring it.
@wty1313
@wty1313 7 ай бұрын
Although I would use shims, the apron likely provides sufficient support much like a riser supports a stair tread.
@SplashJohn
@SplashJohn 5 ай бұрын
Agreed. I can't blame this guy for following the guidelines of his employer, but for him to casually justify his method by saying "Nobody is standing on these things" is lame and misleading. Everybody puts stuff on windowsills -- that's what they're for. The apron will probably keep the front edge up, but the back edge (against the window frame) will slip down on the brads once the caulk line gives way, and that won't take long after somebody moves in. Liners and casings don't need much fastening strength; sills do.
@snmm1029
@snmm1029 Ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I have cats that love sitting in the window and can definitely imagine them making the sill move. No person may be standing on the sill but a pet probably will, so shims should be used.

Right! MDF(medium density fiberboard) is very easy to swell and change form when it gets wet! That’s why the primer coats and paint are so very important to protect the integrity of the material! Thank you for your time watching and commenting! Have a blessed day!

So that foam you scraped at the 0:45 mark shouldn't have been there, it really needs to be caulking when it's a small gap like that, but you effectively removed the air sealing at the sill. Even a little painter's caulking thrown down when you put in the sill will help to keep air out and make for a tighter install. Also, not your fault, but mdf swells and is not a good choice at a sill, unless you live in a zone with zero humidity. And, I make the base reveal of the window equal to the side reveal, just looks better imo.

Great video man. I get thd production end and choice of material due to industry standards..... money. If it was you're house would you shim... would you use at least pfj pine? I honestly made a good bit of money because there's MDF sills eventually swell. The unfinished edge against the window gets condensation or possibly a little leak and it balloons up. Then I get to sell the customer new windows and new sills made out of wood. Again i'm Not knocking it man you cook ass. New construction and remodeling are too totally different thanks. Thank you for the video
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 3 жыл бұрын
Dude! Thank you for your time! I can identify with everything that you said, you totally get the situation! You mentioned shims…to be honest…I would not shim every sill, but maybe the kitchen, a window sill over 60 inches, a wider window sill, or maybe a window sill that can access the outside or roof. I feel a few nails, caulking, and finish can hold up quite a bit, so I haven’t had too many problems in the past. You said it, MDF swelling is the largest issue after the homeowner lives there for a few years. I really appreciate your view and respect the “custom” side as well! Prices and pace are a little different. Just want you to know I agree with you in every way! Look forward to more form you in the future, don’t hesitate if you have any questions on something I happy to give my thoughts! Talk with you later 😎

Great video but... At 16:59 in the video you see that the sill is not square to the window. You do all that fine work and it's ruined by bad window install. I guess you have to pick between a level sill or square to window with a DR Horton home. That would drive me nuts if I owned the house.

Thank you! My home came with (zero) windowsills in any of the windows. It was built in 1980, so maybe it was a budget skip for the previous owner (I have found ALOT of these) or it might have been out of style at the time? Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I've recently took off and old plastic window sill and it looks like it was put on some sort of adhesive, i need to put it back but do you know what I can use to secure it in place? I don't think nails would do in this case :D Also why do you leave that gap underneath the wood (where you put your screwdriver)? Thanks :)
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 Жыл бұрын
For your plastic material I would use an adhesive like Liquid Nail. You may have to buy a caulking gun as well if you don’t already have one. Place a decent amount of adhesive on your plastic sill and place it into position, then press down firmly to smoosh the adhesive and let sit for a few hours to dry. If I nailed the sill material to the framing and didn’t leave any gap, my reveal from the sill material and the window frame wouldn’t be consistent in every window of the house. My focus is to keep the reveal the same at every window, so the gap left underneath changes from window to window. I hope that makes sense…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Well done, I am reluctant to use MDF on a window sill. always afraid of moisture. Ever have any issues with MDF getting wet?
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’ve had issues where my window sill/stool didnt get painted and got wet from a rain storm and had to replace it from swelling…but I have never had an issue when the MDF is fully caulked and painted. The paint does a great job repelling the water. Let’s say there is standing water over a period of time like under a flower pot or something it could eventually eat through the paint and damage the product…this could also damage wood and both would need to be sanded and re-finished. Just my opinion, I’m sure others will say to never use MDF, but I don’t make the product decisions when it comes to these builders. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Great video - prescriptive instructions and very engaging host. 1 question is what to do with the sides of the apron - the edges seem like they would be sharp. Do you add sides to the apron like a joint or just paint over them as-is?
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for watching and commenting! In this case I will leave the apron ends as is and the painter will caulk and paint everything. The edges aren’t really sharp after paint is applied, but great question. I’m just following the builders specs…some aprons do have actual returns or a 45 degree miter to match the detail on the ends, but in this case the builder just wants a 15 degree miter on the ends. Have a blessed day 😎

@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 3 жыл бұрын
Appreciate you watching and leaving a comment! The back edge of the sill is held up by the nails and caulking from the painter…it might seem fragile, but you should be able to place any picture or plant or whatever you store on the sill and have no problem. The only thing I change is a window sill where a person can get in and out of…(egress window in basement, a window that accesses the roof, etc.) in this case I will use shims to secure the window sill in case some ends up stepping on the sill… Might seem a little fragile from the video how it is installed, but I assure you it is strong enough to hold whatever can be stacked on top, just not strong enough for a step 😉 Thank you for your time, any questions please let me know! There's actually a way to scribe those gaps created by uneven casing work. Hold the stool against the casing at a slight angle. Hold a pencil against the wall and drag it from front to back. Use a jigsaw to follow that scribe. Got that trick from Norm Abram (the James Brown of DIY).

Unfortunately it isn’t wood for this house. The window sill is made from MDF. Medium Density Fiberboard…this material is great for being very straight and true to dimensions, but you can’t get the material wet or it swells…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Wouldn't the lack of shims cause the still to sag over time?
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I’ve never had an issue with the sill sagging over time…more so the mdf warping or moving after it gets wet. I unfortunately don’t get to choose the material that I use, the builder gets that decision. If the window allows access to the roof or access outside (basement egress window) I WILL add shims for extra security in case someone stands on it! The apron also helps with keeping the sill nice and straight in the front. Hope this answers your question…let me know if you have any more! Have a blessed day 😎

Hey Matt! The bit I’m using is a “Diablo 1/4” beading bit”. The round-over bit will look the same but has a different size wheel bearing on the end! Best place to find to find it would be Home Depot or ordering it online! Thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

Thanks for the video! So helpful!! I do have a question - is it a bad idea to try to slope the windowsill ever so slightly toward the interior of the house, so that any water wouldn't be able to spill back into the window? Or in your experience is a perfectly level windowsill the way go to? Thanks so much!
@huntercarlson5446
@huntercarlson5446 Жыл бұрын
I personally would keep them level instead of sloping them. I also wouldn’t let any water get inside the window as well. Maybe place some paper towels or a towel on your sill if you put plants on them. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Won't those nail just push through the wood if anyone leans on it? I mean the way you leveled it was to just tap on it with a screwdriver after the nails were in. People put a lot more weight on their window sills than that on a regular basis. I was expecting maybe spray foam or something to give it a little bit of strength, but nothing.... I can imagine those will be out of level within no time at all of someone living there.
@huntercarlson5446

I really like your name. Why are people leaning on their window sills? Is there no other areas in the room to sit or lean on? Yes people put weight on their sills but not enough to damage my install. After caulk and paint you would be surprised how much weight a 6” wide piece can handle. If a window allows access to the roof or outside from a basement egress window I will add shims due to the homeowner possibly standing on it. I have to warranty all of my work in these homes for at least 1 year depending on contracts…imagine over 10,000 window sills installed over the last 5 years and NOT 1 call back to fix a window sill because of my “lack of install”. Thanks for watching and leaving your personal feedback. Have a blessed day 😎

@@huntercarlson5446 Just wanted to follow up and say Thanks! I built my window sill and it came out great. The painting took is what gave me the real problems, but in the end it came out looking great. This was part oa a kitchen remodel in a dump of a house I bought. It came out so good that I'm going to have to redo all the rest of them, once I get the 9 million more important issues with the house fixed.

I understand what your saying, but why are you leaning on a window sill? The only time I have ever had a warranty problem is when someone was standing in the sill to gain easy access the roof. The nails and caulking will withstand anything you can set on a 6 inch wide surface… Unfortunately you don’t know who installed your window sills…I promise you it wasn’t me, especially if your complaining and having problems with your house… I don’t appreciate the sarcasm and profanity you left in the comments, especially when you don’t even know me…there is no need for that… Sorry you didn’t like my video, maybe next time just move in to another video that will help you out. what happens if someone sits on the window sill one day, there's a lot of gap left between the sill and the ledge. Won't sitting on it throw it out of balance.

This is awesome. Thank you! Our new home is being built without window sills and aprons. Shocking to me but we will for sure get someone to install after we close. Any advice on how much to expect to spend to have this done on a 2,700 sq ft home?
@huntercarlson5446

Thank you very much for watching and your comment! Don’t be toooooo shocked, many home builders in the Denver area are just drywall wrapping each window as well. I totally agree with you to getting it done, certain carpentry in the home can bring a totally different feel or emotion when entering a room. I know it’s just a window “sill” or “stool” but it does help the look of each window! Prices will totally vary depending on where you live, but I’ll give you the best estimate or guess based on your quick information... 20-25 total windows 1”x 8”x16’ MDF material - 5-7 pieces Casing to match your doors for apron 1.5 days labor (2 guys- 3/4 day) Demo drywall add .5 to labor (only if material is thicker than the reveal on the window from the drywall) My bid would be $1200 (material included) or $1500 to demo drywall from each window... After you will need to hire a painter to caulk, fill nail holes, primer, paint...I’m “ball-parking” here but maybe expect $600-$800 for the painter to finish the project... Hope this information helps! Please let me know if there is anything other questions! Congrats on the new home! Have a blessed day! 😎

@@huntercarlson5446 You're incredible. Thank you for your time. We're north of Atlanta and bought our current starter home as a new build 7 years ago and it has all the trim and details I'd expect to see in a home, so now "upgrading" to a larger home that comes with virtually no design features is a hard pill to swallow. I'm learning now what this whole "express" home thing is all about. I can only hope and pray the guys working on our new home care as much about the quality of their work as you do about yours. Kudos to you and best wishes in all your endeavors!

I really appreciate that! I do take a lot of pride in my work and push to do the best that I can! You hit the nail on the head with “express”...it’s definitely a new way to build these homes to try and keep the price point affordable. Takes away from some design features, but it still gives the opportunity to upgrade in size! Im sure the workers in your home are gonna crush it and I truly hope the process is peaceful, exciting, and easy! Look forward to hearing from you again! Happy Easter! Hope you get some time with the family this weekend!

Awesome video man! Just purchased a house that we want to add window trim, but thinking the current ears are too short for it to look right. I’m assuming I would need to Replace the stool with the width of the trim determining what the ears width should be on each side? A video of placing trim around the sides and top of these windows would be awesome!!!

@huntercarlson5446 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry it took a while to answer…you are exactly right on replacing the stool to make the ears bigger! You would want to add the width of your trim and an additional 1/2” (I personally want to see the stool wider than the casing) Unfortunately I don’t do a lot of jamb extending and casing for windows, just the stool and apron. But I will get some footage the next time I get the chance! Thank you for your support and hope this helps! If you have more questions I’ll get back to you faster! Have a blessed day 😎
