I just wanted to say thank you! This helped me design and build a balcony on our log cabin. I appreciate your detailed drawings and technical commentary.

That is awesome and you're welcome.

Good stuff Greg. Your work is valued. I have a project where I have cantilever construction on the north side, and overhang that transitions to a balcony on the west. It looks like the west is a cantilever but it is not. Some poor repairs were done years ago, and this one will be a challenge to repair correctly.

Just discovered this channel, as i usually do quickly look over the other content before deciding to sub or not. I have to say WOW - so much awesome information here. Id usually just sub but the wealth of knowledge here is kick ass TY!

Here in California they now require impermeable balconies to be engineered with something like a 300% safety margin after one collapsed from rot in Berkeley a few years back. I think the rational is that structural degradation is difficult if not impossible with an impermeable one as apposed to an open frame one that's typically much easier to inspect. Found this out when I was applying for permits to replace a rotted out balcony in the upscale gated Blackhawk community a few years back. Even though I was replacing the entire wood frame impermeable balcony with an enclosed soft with all steel and concrete and no wood structure mixed in, they still required my engineer to make it three times stronger than needed. You could've literally landed a helicopter on the damn thing!

It's not an expensive balcony. It's a cheap helipad.

Can you offer any updates if the beam was of Steel vs LvL? What would be the differences in the design and any pro's and con's for each?

I put your suggestion on my list of possible videos to be made.

Greg...how would I support a ridge beam on the rim of a 1' extension cantilevered second floor? Thank you.
@gregvancom11 ай бұрын
It might require a cantilevered floor beam to support weight from post and ridge.
@chuckstires203811 ай бұрын
Thank you for the great idea. Conceptually, would this be one 5" x 10" x 6' LVL on either side of the ridge beam support...or several, say 3, joists with sistered 2x10s to each side of the support (six sistered joists, total)?

How to make balcony with TJI beams?

What if the joist run the other way.
@sfboy888 Жыл бұрын
I also have the same question. If someone could answer this, would be awesome. Our joist runs north to south but our balcony would be east to west. Would I need to reconfigure my joints or as least 2/3s of it?

is that beam fully connected?

You can check with your local engineers if you think it needs more structural reinforcement.

Can you covert to a closet?

I guess it would depend on what you're converting it into.

This seems like a bad design... better to extend joists from main floor if it's new construction. I might even remove rim joist and tie into floor joists. Fine for addition.

You said 1/4 and 3/4, then you said 1/3 and 2/3. Which one is it?
@gregvancom6 ай бұрын
Some newer codes want to have a maximum of 1/4 the length of joist protruding out.
