How to Build Boat Cabinets -Pt1 | Coosa Board| Sailboat Restoration Trawler Refit | Aft Cabin (Ep26)

This is aft cabin cowling will be built out of boat building composite materials, constructed of pvc foam board (Celtec) and fiberglass epoxy. The aft cabin cowling will will separate the aft cabin from the cockpit lockers as well as the diesel fuel tank. It's tight squeeze under the trawler cockpit deck and someone is going to get stuck.

The Albin 27 was a pilothouse yacht manufactured in the New England area of the United States from approximately 1983 to 1992. There were reportedly 500-600 of these boats manufactured. The Albin 27 is trailerable and weighed approximately 6,500 pounds from the factory. It is a true pocket trawler with a forward and aft cabin, galley, head, and pilothouse helm.

My aft cockpit scuppers are leaking where they seal to the deck. On my ‘89 27FC they are VERY difficult to access. Making your aft cabin furniture removable is very wise. Love following along with your rebuild as I am working on my “floating restoration”.

Early on I pulled all scuppers and inspected the thru hulls; replaced the plastic ones. I preach: The simple truth is that through use and time all boat parts and systems fail especially in modern boats. So you must plan for access and maintenance

I remember watching Norm Abrams use a compass against a baseboard and the floor. He found the largest gap and set the compass. Then he would slide the compass across the baseboard (the pencil riding on the baseboard) and floor marking high points. He removed the baseboard, trimmed away the wood and when fitting the baseboard back in place, the fit was perfect, minimum gap. Thanks for the video.

You would think carpentry techniques like this would be applicable to a boat. But remember walls are straight and perpendicular and the surfaces relatively flat. Rough fiberglass is just the opposite. It’s not two dimensions but 3 over very tiny distances. I use a contour gauge for best results

Very well thought out. Using pink foam board is a great full size 3D model for sorting out the design concept and fitment details before cutting final material.

The hull liner material will fill those gaps on each side. Installing the liner with the furniture out will make your life much easier and nicer looking.
