DIY Carrom Board - I had fun making a Carrom Board this winter (2015) at home and took few pictures and short videos along the way. I thought I'd compile them together as a short video for your amusement. This is not a professional DIY video, please keep your expectations low. It does not explain you all the steps involved in the entire process.
If you are interested in knowing more details behind the project, I wrote a separate blog explaining the end to end process of making a Carrom Board from scratch. The blog can be found at diycarromboard....
I played Carrom Board a lot while growing up in India, and making one of this quality has been extremely satisfying! I hope you enjoy the video, and please feel free to share, ask questions or com[pli]ment.
Most of the work was done indoors due to extreme cold weather outside (we had negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit - arctic cold), and I don't have big enough work table in the basement to work on this project.
Please note that I am not a professional carpenter or a woodworker ;) and I do not take custom orders, it was purely a hobby project.
Please watch the video in Full HD (1080p).
Check out my other video to see the Carrom Board in action. • Homemade Carrom Board ...
Peace!

That’s got to be the best craftsmanship in a Carrom Board I have seen. Always wanted to see someone make this board with passion and who probably plays it with passion too. Very well done. Regards from Australia

Well done. Nicely crafted. Just a suggestion, pocket corners of the play area should have been flush with the boundary wall to avoid coin kick back. Also, there should be backing support to the play area if you intend to use it on a stand or stool as the board will warp without support frame on the back. B Appreciate the way you have made the board.
@MahasriKalavala
@MahasriKalavala 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! Next time I make another one, I'll keep an eye on the pockets. The board is extremely sturdy the way it is, adding 6 to 9 layers of epoxy made it rock solid, and less chance of warping. The store bought carrom boards are extremely thin and cheap, and they will warp without proper support.

Hi, I'd really like to thank you for uploading this video. I just read your blog and it deserves the best of appreciation. I used to play carrom since my childhood but down the line, getting into University and getting a job, this hobby of mine was lost. We had a wonderful carrom board at my grandparents place but after they passed away, the carrom board was gone as well. Just couple of months ago I was invited by my neighbour for a function and I had an opportunity to play carrom with them. The nostalgia flooded in. I wanted to invest in a very good carrom board which would last atleast for a couple of generation but being what others call me being choosy and the so called perfectionist, none of the ones available in the market were best in quality or not worth the cost to be justified. I was wondering if I could hand make one as I usually prefer to do stuff on my own. Like working on motorcycles instead of trusting it with the service station only to end up with a hefty bill. A DIY Project if you may. I was sceptical to search if someone would even put up any videos of DIY carrom board, but I came across your video and was astonished that you went to the lengths of creating it from scratch with actual wood according to design standards with tasteful touches. You had made something out of passion and when one creates something with it, the outcome would always be marvelous. For this, as an engineer you have my respect. I can now with confidence say that I can make a carrom board of my own with my own two hands not immediately but definitely down the line with which even my grandkids would play. Thank you and God bless.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot especially if it inspires someone or helps them with achieving their personal goals. Those childhood memories are the ones that kept me going, and it is very critical that we critique our own work and not satisfy with results. That will yield a very high quality product and no matter how well you think it’s got, there is always room for improvement. I think I wrote it in my blog that, when I was finishing the carrom board, after spending a month putting varnish coating after coating, I realized the surface wasn’t very flat due to the excessive palm sander use with several grits of sandpaper. I then had to strip to bare wood, make it absolutely flat by sticking sand paper to a wooden block and did manual sanding. Then only I started applying varnish for another month. It really took almost 2 months to reach the desired level of finish, and it is still not the best in my opinion - again it comes down to the fact that never be satisfied with your work. Anyway, I hope you get to work on it soon, in the worse case, you’ll be left with knowledge that you can improve on it the next time you do it. Good luck, and I am always thrilled to see thoughtful comments and pictures of individual homemade carrom boards. When you make one, please feel free to share a picture. I’m sure many others may find it useful. Also, I’m glad that you didn’t ask how much I spent on the carrom board. It is irrelevant when you want to do something right. Also, the money I spent may not be same for folks in a different country. That seem to be the most common question I get asked and I usually never answer 😎 Good luck!

@MahasriKalavala 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. Woodworking can be very fun, and very forgiving. You don’t have to be an expert. You cannot make mistakes and even if you do, it is easy to fix. If you just want to polish, you can clean your board lightly with mineral spirits and apply multiple coatings of polyurethane. That would be the simplest and most effective option. That should water proof the board and will protect for future use. Just make sure you wait for a few days for it to completely dry before playing on it. Good luck!

Can you please tell how you fitted the playing surface to the frame ? I mean any reinforcement or just glue ? Because with only glue will it stay for long ?
@MahasriKalavala
@MahasriKalavala 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t use any reinforcement. The playing surface is a most half inch thick and a few screws around the inside square is good enough to hold it. It is super strong and have been using it for more than 5 years. Once you put the glue, it becomes permanent and hard to remove it.

Thank you, local Indian stores carry decent quality boards, or you can order them online as well. It is of same quality that you get in India. It is very time consuming to make one (took me more than a month) and turned out to be a very expensive carrom board because of the tools and materials I used. I don't think anyone would ever buy this in the store for the amount I spent on this ;) Good luck!

Hello, did you sand between the 8 layers of epoxy? whats the purpose of polyurethane after the epoxy? I am following the video I have just covered the surface with epoxy but its not smooth. I used a credit card to spread the liquid around. please help
@MahasriKalavala
@MahasriKalavala 8 жыл бұрын
+syed zaidi Sorry for the delay in my response. I used marine epoxy and the instructions are very clear. It is recommended to sand it it is dry, but you can apply multiple coats of epoxy without sanding as long as you know when to apply. I did not use credit card for applying epoxy. I used squeegee to gently spread the epoxy, and also used sponge roller sold by the same epoxy company for applying it. I cut into pieces and applied by hand rather than rolling it.

Mukta Pal Thank you! I will keep you posted when I am ready to take custom orders, and you'll be the first one to hear. I do understand not everyone can make this at home for various reasons. Thank you for the kind words.

Very nice. I don’t know much about carrom, but is this table basically standard? The reason I ask is because there seems to be many variations, especially regarding the pockets.

This was built to the International Carrom Federation standards. Although some people say pockets could be a bit different, but this is how most of the carrom boards are when you buy them.
