Years later this is in my humble opinion still the best tutorial for building acoustic panels to improve the sound of your room. I think the panel construction technique is the best I've seen. Congratulations and thank you for taking the time to make the video.Greetings from Italy.

These are some of the best panels I have seen made on youtube. Great idea using the open sides. It gives a greater yield of exposed square footage of absorbent material. Also the fact that the panel does not sit flush against the wall, since there is a gap between the rockwool and the wall due to the back frame, you get better low frequency extension for better low frequency dampening. These are a great design. Nice work. The only thing I would have done differently, is that I would have used microsuede to cover them. It has a high enough thread count to keep the fiberglass particles in (good for avoiding lung cancer), and because it still has top notch air transmittance.

The only problem is that they aren't absorbing low frequencies below 100hz, which is where most small rooms have problems. You need a diaphramatic device. Go to Acoustic Fields, and check out their build plans to build one of their ACDA cabinets, which they sell. You can also buy their activated carbon filters for even better results. They are, by far, the best low frequencies absorption devices on the market. Here's a video of their design. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaWlgaaEprWpb6c

@@Oneness100 please not you with your pseudoscience and carbon thats made for water filtration as acoustic treatment. Dennis is selling snake oil. These traps are fine for what they are being used for. If I were to try and trap the lowest of the lows, I would go with helmholtz resonators, not water filteration pellets lol...

@@matthewward5813 hmm yeah that Dennis character is a bit troubling (plus terrible over the phone) but it seems like that company is just about only one talking about how porous insulation doesn't actually affect lower frequencies. its so frustrating find any reasonable explanations on how to DIY for treatment regarding lower range F but maybe its all overrated. Its all so confusing and draining!

One 4x2' RIGID board can create 4 or 8 wedges, depending how you cut them. I used larger wedges, so i got 4 wedges from each board. The board is 2" thick, so 1 RIGID board will give you 8" of chunk in the corner.

I am not an acoustic engineer, but from what i understand the traps are more effective if there is a gap between the trap and the wall. The rule of thumb i followed is that the gap is as wide as the thickness of the trap.

Im going to follow this tutorial because its very good, just one thing the super chunk corner traps, im a little confused as to how you put this together. I do see that you have some triangles on the top and bottom resting on shelves but did you then attach a front panel (put together like standard traps only 2ft x 8ft) with fabric that covered everything from floor to ceiling? because thats what it looks like from the resulting picture? Thanks

Which bass frequencies do your bass traps reduce and by how much? Does the size and mass of materials and it's placement in the room reduce specific bass frequencies which you tuned these traps to? Did you analyse the room acoustics before and after? And if so did these traps absorb the target bass frequencies which you wanted to reduce?

Thanks man! Awesome tutorial! Just one question though. Can these traps also be used as regular absorbers on the walls to absorb mid and high frequencies? I have a pretty small room (2.5mx3.5mx2.5m) that is used both as a control room and a recording space. Will I be good with the same thing you did on the corners, a few rigid traps on the walls and a few well built diffusors? Thanks in advance, and I cant thank you enough for that guide. Ben

I like that you left the sides open to let the sound in, but now that you have had them up for a while, do you think the 1/4x3/4 front frame is thick enough? I would expect the pressure of the fabric to make them bow and warp. Also, where did you get the 703? I can only find it online with high shipping costs.
@JasonBalibanProductions
@JasonBalibanProductions 9 жыл бұрын
cwhogan123 The frames are plenty thick as long as you are not moving them around too much. The front frame prevents bowing. Just build 6 more last weekend for a friend with the same approach. Look for a local industrial supplier of insulation.

I see a lot of people using the super chunk in corners. I've considered this for my studio room also, however, I'm wondering just how cost effective it really is compared to stacking two 2x4 panels across each corner floor to ceiling. Here is my point: With the super chunk you get more mass in the corner but don't have an airspace like you would if you just used panels. How does this compare in performance?? Second, to fill an entire corner of an 8 foot tall corner, my math showed that it would take Six 4" thick 2'x4' panels (each triangle having 2' legs, 4 triangles cut from each panel). Six panels is significant and could go along ways in treating a whole room when placed properly! For example, with 6 panels I could cover 3 of my 4 vert. corners floor to ceiling compared to just 1 super chunk corner. Again, so cost wise, I'm wondering how cost effective the super chunk really is?? Any thoughts or ideas? Have there been any audio studies on this done?
@WiseDaGod777

I wonder & am contemplating this too! I wanna go with just a panel & leave a air space behind its easier & cheaper! But what is the sound absorbtion comparison? If you make a thick trap like 12 inches & you "caddy corner" it your leaving a nice amount of space behind!! Idk??
@mrkamerer
@mrkamerer 6 жыл бұрын
I hope a professional chimes in at some point as I'm wondering the same but my understanding as of right now is that there is a certain threshold where you simply need MASS to gain effective absorption. Again, I don't understand the physics of it and I'm just throwing this out as an example but I think it's something like: a 2" panel with a 2" gap will absorb (let's say 250Hz) just as well as a 4" flush-mounted panel but in order to absorb down to say, 200Hz you need 6" of mass, regardless of whether there is an air gap or not. That's my understanding for the time being but I really hope someone muuuuuuch smarter than me can explain it better!

Hi, great video! I have some questions: Would this also work as acoustic panels putting them on the walls?, I mean not just as bass traps, but also absorving other frequencies. And...at the last part you showed the "limp bag bass traps"; which I understand are the pieces of fiber glass you put in all the frames,but; however, I don't really get if you made all of these to work as "bass traps" or as insulation or just as acoustic panels. Do you think that this can work as an insulation system adding something like drywall after the fiber glass? I hope you can answer my questions. Thank you so much.
