How to build DIY external filter media from plastic jar and submersible pump

DIY external filter from plastic jar and submersible pump.

Plastic jar serves as a storage for all filter media while the power head is placed in aquarium without filter media. This aims to make it easier when cleaning or replacing filter media without disturbing the water and ornaments in the aquarium.
NOTE:
You can change all media filters and their arrangement based on your concept and your experience. If you want to try making this external filter, it must be considered the strength of the jar, strong glue and a good seal to prevent leakage.
On the market you might get quality filters at low prices. This is not a price problem but just sharing the experience of the experiment I did at home. Hopefully it can be useful.
Tools needed:
1. Electric drill and drill bit to drill or can use solder.
2. Cutter
3. Wrench
Materials needed:
1. Plastic jars (must be strong and leak-proof, not soft)
2. Verlop size 3/4 "drat outside 1/2" drat inside
3. Metal pipe fittings or plastic sizes 1/2 "- 16 mm
4. Sealtape
5. Amara SP1200 Power Head
6. Aquarium transparent pipe
7. Aquarium Pipe Connections
8. Super strong epoxy glue (optional)
9. Platic hose (optional)
Media Filter:
1. Bioring
2. Coarse Sponge
3. Medium Sponge
4. Smooth Sponge
5. Coral stone (preferably removed or replaced with other suitable media like lavarock) because my experience for freshwater filters is quickly clogged.

Wow!! This is really a cute and well made little filter, and the way you've placed the media inside I think is absolutely great. You start with the ceramic rings to diffuse the incoming flow of water and let the heavy particles settle. Next you have foams to catch and collect the debris from large to small. And in the final step, the media you want your benifitial bacteria to grow in and on, has polished, particle-free water so their pores won't get clogged up with waste and can all be housed by the bacteria.

Nope! That is backwards! The water should go through a medium mechanical media, like sponge then through something fine BEFORE getting to ceramic rings or similar! Seriously, you don't want dirty aquarium water going into what is supposed to be your biological media first. Plenty of other comments saying the same thing!!

I also think that the coral helps to control the ph level of the water. BUT.... I would design the filter to be inside the tank. I've had too many leaks in the past. Every connection and elbow join is another place that can fail. (Who knew that UV light filters only lasted for a couple of years before they start leaking?)

This is the best filter which I saw for my tank. I have watch like many videos and did some and it did not work for me. Wait for it but this did 100% for me . If you guys are looking for a cheap filter then this is one it will cost 6 to 10 dollars. For me I finished with 250rf/

First off thanks for sharing your video good job. One thing I would suggest is to have the filter on the low pressure side of the pump. The way it is if the media clogs it could pop off the pipe at the inlet to the canister and because the inlet to the pump sits so low in the water it could drain almost the whole tank.

No brass in aquarium it contain copper (Cu). And second main element is zink (Zn). Also if it is not a food grade it also could contain lead (Pb) which improve its mechanical properties, but is strong poison. Also brass is used in the KDF filters (myth or real) . it will produce electro chemical cell in the water, worthier in salty one, between Cu and Zn. Zn will be washed away, Induced currents potentially will kill bacteria, may be precipitate some metals. Some good stuf Cl will be bonded to Zn. Over the time Cu will be washed away. Also as somebody pointed in comments. It is better to pull water from filter, this will produce small vacuum in it. This should reduce probability of any leak.

@@galihadiputro7677 Hi. Technically everything is ok, but don't use brass, copper or any other metal parts which has copper or zinc. Only food grade stainless steel could be used (still questionable, for human is safe, but for fish?). Food polyethylene containers cheap and good, but nothing could be glued to them for long period of time. Better to use uniseal or some fitting with sсrew.

The concept for most of these is very understandable but nobody ever lists the type of flexible hose there using to make those important connections. What is that green hose that is making most of the important connections and where can you get it? Its obviously very flexible and has stretch so it makes a good seal.

You should reverse the flow,water coming from top and use gravity for water to trickle down not the pump to force it thru filter. Your first filter layer should be filter floss.

Great idea and interesting video. How did you make such perfect holes in the plastic? I would have the media setup in the reverse of what you did. Going from coarse media to finer to prevent the biological media from getting any dirt so it won't clog.
