shein and romwe are an absolute NO for grunge aesthetic, rooted in overconsumerism and unethical practices. it doesn't matter how much money you have, buying consistently from these places is extremely wrong. i would suggest online second hand stores, in person thrift stores, saving money to buy a few really good quality pieces over a bunch of poorly made unethical garbage
@Ash._.e_8 ай бұрын
I mean grunge can be whatever the fuck you want it to be i guess, the fashion doesn't matter since its music based however the clothes are like a compliment to it. But if we're talking about grunge style, its primarily meant to be thrifted or just second-hand of some sort since it emerged from Seattle where it was just cold as fuck (which explains the layered or baggy clothing concept) and people were typically working class and dressed as such from what they could afford in thrifts, its also meant to be a big "fuck-you" to the glamorous materialistic 80s hair-metal look or whatever the hell the Bands or the movement were opposing at the time. I feel like the fashion in the video was pretty nice for a grunge wardrobe, however, it feels like a more MODERN version of what 90s grunge fashion, or what grunge fashion in general really is...but that's fine since fashion always changes and progresses!! But the part of the video where it was like "materials you CANT wear to be grunge'" and its lace, velvet, silk etc.....that's actually grunge as fuck, or its sorta in a sense....i mean they had the 'kinder whore' style which came from the Female musicians of grunge bands and they wore all that kinda stuff, from the lace, to the silk dresses, to the velvet, to the occasional glittery eye makeup. It may not directly be grunge but it HEAVILY OVERLAPS........I say you could totally wear the lace, the silk and even the glitter and it can be grunge as hell!!

Your right though, grunge aesthetic is so much more than what It's often represented as today-which is fine you can dress how you want. A lot of grunge icons were literally homeless junkies, breaking gender norms and criticizing the system. It's a little sad when people talk about all those things that grunge "can't" be

Hi! It’s awesome that you want to express yourself with the grunge style! If your school has rules about makeup or clothes, maybe you could start small, like using accessories, darker colors, or subtle makeup that still feels grunge but fits the rules. Your style is yours and you can always make it your own, even in little ways!

@ethereal_032 ай бұрын
Grunge music is definitely at the core of the grunge style, it’s what shaped the attitude, the look and the entire vibe of this aesthetic. But that doesn’t mean you have to be a hardcore listener to appreciate or embody the grunge aesthetic. You can still pull off this aesthetic without being a fan of the music. The music gave birth to the aesthetic, but the style is flexible. So to sum it all up, yes you can.

Can someone pls give me a simple explanation of the grunge style / culture? or what type of style this is and how I can dress like this without giving in to overconsumption? I like this a bit but I’m a bit more tomboy?
@georgiadailey1824 сағат бұрын
Wikipedia: "Grunge fashion is characterized by durable and timeless thrift-store clothing, often worn in a loose, androgynous manner to de-emphasize the silhouette." Layering was also key. Buying used clothing not only lessens overconsumption, it also the most genuine way to adopt the aesthetic, and "tomboy" works well with the androgynous aspect. I suppose the images shown here are a way of interpreting the style's modern day evolution and may be more what you're looking for, but they are not exactly representitive of the original movement, you can get an idea of that by looking up the bands mentioned (and, of course, the quintessitial grunge icon, Kurt Cobain). When it began it was simply starving artists buying what they could from second-hand and army surplus stores. The band tees they regularly wore were authentic statements of support for the music they enjoyed, otherwise, they didn't really give a damn what they were wearing.
