my tip is to be patient. when i started dressing more alternative, i wanted the switch to be instant, but that’s not realistic! in my opinion, it’s way better to slowly incorporate pieces you love into your wardrobe than to do one big haul (especially from a company such as shein). most of my favorite pieces are thrifted. your wardrobe will be much more unique and interesting, and it’ll show!

This is such good advice! This approach also gives you time to emotionally adjust to a new look and not feel a sense of dysphoria. It also gives you time to get a true sense of YOUR personal style and comfort instead of just jumping off the deep end and ending up with a closet full of stuff you actually don't feel comfortable in and don't actually wear!

Girl to develop the thought even further, stylists are not going to make situation any better, in my experience. 40% of what we bought for my edgier capsule , I’m not wearing. And not planning to. It’s like we need another type of service…a strategy almost.

agree. when we rush and try to check everything off right away, it never turns out the way you’d really like. we’d also save more money if we just take our time :)

tattoos / piercings are always the immediate response when people give advice to those who want to appear more alternative or edgy. but of course, not everyone can get these things, for many reasons. i see you! so here’s just some extras that might be easier to elevate the edgy vibe: - layering jewelry and clothes. multiple stacked bracelets, rings, necklaces. especially different materials and sizes. it’s cool to mix things up. maybe layer a few basic pieces. like wearing lace, tank tops, fishnet, or mesh on TOP of a shirt or dress. - fake piercing jewelry. no real piercings necessary. - thrift some older clothes! - multiple fishnets / stockings over each other is a game changer (trust me) reallyyy cool effect - experiment with makeup. try odd colors, draw random things around your eyes. draw a new lip shape on your lips! - you can take inspiration from your favorite artists or movie characters - black jewelry is also edgy and unique. try some red pieces. maybe blue or brown. don’t limit yourself to ONLY silver or bronze. it’s okay to mix it up. - merchandise of bands or just any sort of media that you enjoy! especially if it’s a little more on the alternative side. - try some “weird” or “spooky” hair clips. maybe some bows or braid your hair in a whimsical way. if you can’t cut or dye your hair in certain ways, you can try colorful or patterned hair extensions (clips). - get inspiration from different time periods. ANY time period. even if you want a victorian / vampiric style, GO FOR IT !! - weird socks, scarves, gloves, and stockings. - you can try bigger jewelry. get a chunky pair of earrings that draw more attention. get a statement piece for your necklace! - put random things on EVERYTHING. put stickers on your stuff, put pins and buttons on your bags, iron some patches onto your jackets and pants. due your clothes black. cut and rip things up. make it messy, who cares? glue some charms, sew random patterns, or add beads on your clothing! maybe even learn to make your own funky jewelry hope this helps. i’ve been dressing “edgy” for a few years now and i love it so much :3 it feels like me. remember that there are sooo many different styles and subcultures that are unique and different. never force yourself into a box! just have fun

Tip 1: Assymetry. Hemlines and necklines are often symmetrical so buying pieces with hi-low hems, handkerchief hems, or assymetrical necklines will look more edgy Tip 2: Oversized/ undersized, Contrast the level of fit in your garments e.g. a loose crop top, a very narrow maxi skirt. Subvert fashion expectations Tip 3: Rips and tears. Rips and tears in things like tights, jeans and t-shirts can be used to make an outfit more edgy Tip 4: Historical details e.g. historybounding. Wearing clothes which echo or hark back to bygone eras can look very edgy. Maxi skirts with high necked blouses; corset belts; shawls, all can be used to make an outfit stand out Tip 5: Unusual shapes. I am going to use sleeves as an example. Usually sleeves on modern garments are very straight. Puff sleeves, especially if oversized, will add a lot of interest to an outfit. Another way to add that edgy feel is to wear long cuffs that drape over your hands, pointed cuffs that cover the back of the hand, long sweeping sleeves or even sleeves edged with tattered or ragged details

I also think great idea is pairing things that in theory are not supposed to go together, if that makes sense? Like building a goth outfit with Little house on the prairie type of dress or making punk battle jacket out of elegant blazer. It handsomely subwerts expectations and enforces that kinda overlooked 'wear whatever you want as long as you listen to alt music and have alt beliefs' rule of alternative fashion 🥰

i personally love layering jewelry and accessories to look more alternative! one of my main outfits is just a simple black tee and black shorts, but when i add chunky silver necklaces, rings on almost every finger, and thigh high socks with black boots, it instantly makes the outfit 10x edgier

As a grunge girlie, here’s my tip. If it’s possible, work in a handmade piece. It doesn’t have to big or eye catching. I crochet so I find some way to incorporate my favorite hobby. If you draw then break out your pens and a pair of nude tights. DIY really is a big part of alt culture and we all want to see you be yourself. (I know it was mentioned in the video but I just wanted to expand a bit more and give inspo) 😊😊

I would add two tips. If black looks natural on you (Winter coloring/high contrast with pale skin), you can actually try muted pastels to see if they make your skin look a little more ghostly and sickly. Not sure on darker skin if using muted/more cool toned darker fabrics would have the same effect but I would experiment. Two is slowly ease in. It takes time to collect the items, to integrate the items in your day to day life, and feel comfortable in the new style your developing for yourself. Most people take years to slowly crawl into their style, so treating it like a journey rather than a fixed destination can be super helpful. Be intentional and celebrate every time you step outside your comfort zone no matter how small of a step it is. Cause it doesn't matter what corporations, social media, or strangers think. It matters most what you think

Instant sub! Love your message. I wanna share my personal perspective to this here. I went on a style journey about 10 years ago (I'll turn 37 on friday this week btw.) and never thought it would end up like this. Basically I felt ugly my entire life. Mismatched and morphed. Like nothing's truly matching. I felt like my physical features were playing me (in a very bad way). I also felt like nobody could ever love me the way I truly am. All these things made me wanna hide what I actually believe in, hide my true intentions, true mindset, opinions, thoughts, everything. On the other side there was oversharing going on whenever I liked someone a lot. Because I wanted to believe they were the right kind of person for me (no matter if it was a romantic or platonic way of relationship, just like... a potential to become my pack, if you will.) People were usually very annoyed by me or very intimidated by me. And I never understood why. When that style journey started, I initially wanted to figure out what looks best on me, what could "heal me" could bring out my "true personality" and "true self". Because that's what a lot of all these styling systems claim they'll do, right? I took a very deep dive into seasonal color analysis, David Kibbe's system, John Kitchener's system, Zyla, a lot of different systems, also other types of color analysis. I even got my colors done professionally. And while I was learning things about myself and it made it easier to perceive myself the way I actually look like, I also lost myself in the process. BUT I would say this was a necessary evil. I tried all my colors from my seasonal color palette, tried shapes, silhouettes and stuff from my Kibbe ID and essence blend, tried to match with all of these and felt like... yes this looked harmonious, but not like myself. I felt so lazy and bored and basically the opposite of creative (which to me equals "dead inside"). And aside from that: Anything I had loved before felt invalid and wrong. I am so glad my mom just pushed herself into telling me that one thing "Girl, this isn't you! You're not that cotton candy doll, YOU ARE BAD ASS! You're daring, you're different, you're crazy, you're OUT THERE. You should not deminish yourself just to look generic. BE YOU! Life's too short for this sh*t!", I didn't understand what she meant when she said it, but after some time thinking about it and some chats with her, I was finally able to get it. I am not about the typical beauty standards or about looking the most feminine and most polished possible. I am not about looking SUPER (or perfectly) harmonious. I am not about smooth and blended. What I am into is edgy, exaggerated, intense, magnetic, dark, moody, out of this world, artistic, stuff like that. My internal being is very eclectic, sometimes very literal, sometimes very metaphorical, sometimes very contradictive and also bluntly honest. I am moody, I am dark in a way. Why not allow myself to add that to my personal style? My personal aesthetic? Then, one day I made a promise to myself: If something truly speaks to me, I will not bow to standards, I will allow myself to like it and get it for myself. I will allow myself to wear it and fully delve into my own personal aesthetic. And my aesthetic is somewhat goth in a way. Sometimes more or less intense. One way to add edge to your style is to wear colors out of your seasonal color palette, to wear shapes and silhouettes out of your own physical shapes and silhouettes, to wear styles that might be contrary to what you get mostly perceived as (e.g. you get perceived as very cute and girly: the opposite would be severe/harsh and androgynous shapes and silhouettes like structured, tailored yet boyish/manly garments). If you just wanna add slight edge, only wear slightly more androgynous and severe shapes and silhouettes. Things like that. But these are only examples. I like to go for extremes because my personality is pretty intense. So yah, basically: My coloring is light and warm and I like to wear dark and cool colors. My shape and silhouette is pretty mixed, but is perceived mainly friendly, approachable and cute. So I like to go for mature, magnetic, intense shapes and details. Stuff like that. I am not about looking super pretty, I am about looking like myself. Which always is linked very tightly to what I feel like and to what I am on the inside. (To anyone that's into astrology: I am a scorpio sun with a gemini rising and a virgo moon, libra in mars and leo in my Lilith and tird house, and yes it was hard for me to allow myself to simply just go for what I like. Because for whatever reason I felt obligated to wear stuff that made me look the most likable to the most people. Maybe that's because I got hated on and bullied for such a long time when growing up, but that doesn't matter anymore. I am not 10 to 17 anymore, I'm close to my 40's now, and I am so glad I am. I always hear others say "I wish I was 16 again" or "...in my 20's again", and I keep saying "Oh God, no!", if I hear that. Because that was the hardest and most hurting time for me. I am looking forward to getting older, having more experience and aging. Because I am very drawn to knowledge and experience. I love aged faces. They are beautiful and interesting to me. And I am not afraid to age visually. And I think that mindset - nowadays - already is somewhat edgy, because a lot of people fear aging and try to reduce it, never make it happen or rewind it. I am what I am and while I can influence my health a bit, I can't influence genetics. I also don't want to. I love my face and body for what they are. And I finally allow myself to appreciate my personal aesthetic. Even if other's around me think I'm weird. Where I live, I never see people wearing stuff I like, I get stared at, some people make mean comments about me. But there are also younger people who ask me about what I wear, about my hairstyle, my make up and my mindset. And I like that. Those who don't like me don't matter anyways. Those who are interested will get answers and CAN be inspired if they want to, those who like it, are invited to look and those who like me as a person are usually my personal besties. I have co-workers who love my personality but don't really like my style, that's totally fine, they don't have to. They are allowed to share their opinion with me, I won't hate them for that. But that's it. I am just writing this down because I am aware that there are so many young people out there searching for their style, searching for their purpose, their sense in life, their intentions, mindset, lifestyle, whatever. And being scattered by all these standards, trends and external influences. Allow yourself to feel into yourself. What feels most like home. What feels most like you ARE AT HOME? In a good way. What makes you feel like yourself? It CAN change over time, we grow, we evolve, we change. But hey, that's FUN! Be you. Free yourself from standards. You don't have to look like everybody else (aka generic).

My mom also gave loving but blunt critiques over the years and I'm grateful. How many times I've heard "Mija, change your shirt or something. This isn't you" makes me laugh now 🤦🏻‍♀️ And she was right. She often told me to put on lipstick since I'm so pale and often I would resist due to laziness. But again she was right because red lips pull it all together... like Snow White, it just works. ❤ Mama knows.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO. Right now I’m 29 and trying to transition from a more crazy aunt ecclectic messy wardrobe (which is also awesome just not my vibe) to a more elevated alternative glam rock vibe. My main take away has been the investment in higher quality fabric basics to then show off my ecclectic textured pieces in a more polished way… also TAILORING!!!

Nice video but I would add something about your last chapter : IT DEPENDS WHERE YOU LIVE. In most western countries, yes, usually the encounter with people who are negative about an alt look goes okay. But they might still spit on you. Or dare their friend to grab your accessories or hair. Or follow and harass you. And sometimes it goes way further than that. It depends a heck lot about where, when, in which context and company. Style is great but stay safe !

I would say to mix items from high and low priced brands, thrifted pieces and DIY, mix it up so that it appears you collected the outfit over time and didn't just buy it all at one time in one store. Not only to make it edgier but also make it more authentic looking. To avoid the cookie cutter mall goth look. If you like the look of band tees, pick shirts from bands you actually like. (buy from the band's website or bandcamp to support them directly!) So that way, your outfit represents the real you and isn't just a costume. Being authentically you is the most edgy thing.

I really reccomend Vinted their filter options make it pretty easy to find exactly what you're looking for. Also for accesoiries I personally love Etsy its more expensive but thats because you find a lot of handmade pieces on there which makes your outfit more unique. And my last tip is a leather jacket makes any outfit more edgy. A genuine leather jacket will last longer than a fake/✨vegan✨ leather jacket they are expensive however you can look for them at thriftstores and flea markets to find an affordable one.

For me what can feel edgy but still "me" is to go SO simple or plain that it becomes weird again, or mix plain with jazzy. For example a glitter camisole or wacky mesh shirt and big platforms but no makeup and hair in one long basic braid with no color, gel or embellishments. Or plain loose long sleeve t, straight leg pants, and boring practical loafers with big bold jewelry. Putting a shear, long sleeve turtleneck under pretty much anything works too. Also I have naturally very white eyebrows which I never loved, but I guess now I'm naturally edgy 😆

As an Arctic cold soft classic I’ve been ogling edgier types all my life. But with each attempt, I overdid it!!! And looking back at my photos, I do not only dislike the look, I dislike what it does to my skin tone and balance. Is there, like, a way of doing it that is super soft, sophisticated, but not outright boring and not-edgy? I can’t seem to find the balance, always between perpetuating Christian autumn and e-girl personas😅
