Welding I ever do is not so much a show piece as it is functional. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to break a weld even if done without the 'stack of dimes' elegance. As long as you're getting good penetration of both sides - it'll be plenty strong. It's really a pain in the ass to remove if you ever need to. The weld metal material is incredibly tough! Strength before aesthetics. Good job bro. Those windows are a real achievement in engineering.

I'm the same, it's normally all just to get good penetration and look relatively okay after grinding and paint. I do try to make them look good but its rare haha. Anyway thank you for watching and for the comment

@@FerrariLamborghini24 It seems that that a gullwing like this with an 2 inch deep inner pocket would be ideal. The inner pocket would be a great place to store recovery gear and tools as well as seal the interior from any water leak in the gullwing cover. And if the inner pocket was securely bolted into place it w red loctite on the bolts or safety wire it would be very theft resistant.

Awesome! Just returned from a couple of weeks living out of the back of my xj and realised I needed something like this and found your tutorial just as I started to research ideas. Definitely going to follow your lead here albeit I'm not after storage rather just want something I can manually open from the inside when I need some fresh air in the back. The water storage will definitely be a plus too though! Love seeing your xj progress though, gives me way too many ideas.

G'day Mike, as an ex-tradie, the "gull wing" or what ever term, are such a handy feature and for most, a top hinged solution will be far more practical. Of course, it does depend on the storage solution inside. I would suggest mate, that you really think about whether or not to go with a full on drawer system. They do lock you in to a particular methodology and can limit flexibility overall. Not to mention they can be quite weighty. Maybe a part draw system IMO. Anyway, good show mate. Cheers Duke. P.S. I'm hoping it will help tidy up the internal storage at the back a little more. Just having a recovery kit in there or a wash and hygiene setup the other side just makes life easier. The drawer system I am making is just going to be one or two big flat tables that are as low as possible in the back. Its just so that the whole inside can be pulled out and accessed from either side. Its more of a drawer platform. The internal cargo self will then just sit above it so you have an upper shelf but I am going to remove the legs and have two diagonal legs that can fold away to the whole upper shelf can fold flat or be removed. I want it to all be modular so the Jeep can still be filled with bags and suitcases if need be. haha, i do get a lot of comments about bushcraft. I still enjoy doing it but its not something I will film anytime soon. Thanks again mate and appreciate the comments!

@@WorkshoptoWilderness Yeah Mike the recovery kit is a fantastic option on one side and of course a hygiene "station" needs to be particularly accessible too, especially with the fam on board. Glad you're still think'n about bigger items, whether luggage or otherwise, exactly my original point. I've no doubt its all gonna come together mate, love what you are doing to utilise the full potential of this vehicle, mechanically and within its dimensions. I was only jok'n on the bushcraft, I did pick up on your comments under baited breath and hence my shit stir, don't mean to be soppy about it, but still, you did inspire me to the point where it put my focus back where it ought to be.

They really do cost a fortune when you look them up. They sell them for the XJ also but again its over $250 a side and the quality isnt quite what I would expect for that money. Hopefully the project goes well! Thanks for watching.

I really like this, you did a great job. Are you going to put a little gas strut on to hold the window/gullwing up? How do you like the rotopax cans and mounts? I'm thinking about getting one or two of those 4 gallon flat cans for my roof rack and maybe some 2 gallon cans for my tire carrier.

I think some struts would be good, or a bar that can click into position. I really like the rotopax system, the quality of the mounts, locks and containers is extremely good. Its just expensive for what it is I think. I would certainly get more of them when I can find somewhere I want them to go. The container ones are cool but not waterproof so you have to make a seal for them sadly, or else I wanted to make a medical box from one. Thanks for watching!

@@WorkshoptoWilderness a little bar like a hood prop would be neat or maybe some sort of dual purpose thing to prop it up like a tool of some sort or camping implement. I've never installed gas struts on anything but I have watched some videos and I think it can be challenging to find the perfect location to get the proper leverage for the strut otherwise it would be pretty neat. I know explore glazing has gas struts on their gullwing windows you could try to find some pictures and see how they do it.

You see I want to do this but I have a 99 2 door sport and I really don’t know how this would work with the long rear glass. My 2 door also has the pop out windows so it definitely would take a lot of modification.

I think it would be awesome on 2 door. One large gullwing panel with four hinges would be super strong. I don't think there would be any issues at all provided you used four hinges and not two.
