Just found your channel. Was going to try to grow collards this year, I'm in Minnesota. But just one bit of advice, make sure the zip ties are facing downward, I saw that you placed yours facing up, even if you cut them they will tear through your plastic or your netting.

Welcome to my channel! I must admit, I had thought for years that winters in here in Illinois were * thee * coldest but then I learned of winter in Minnesota :-). Great tip on the zip ties. Thanks! ~Batavia

Liked this. I'm going to build simple frames out of 1 by 4 and then use your first method to build some floating row covers for garden rows. (I love using ideas to meet what I need.) Thanks for this video.
@BBettaGarden Жыл бұрын
That's really awesome! I can actually see the frames you described. I'm not that confident with a build like that so I did something similar with PVC pipe to be a square cage..I added poultry wire to it but have thought it would be nice to use row cover or netting of some sort instead. Take care.

Ọmọ Ile-Iwe Baht-Yahawadah Family , hey there!! This is one of my favorite garden projects because I can do all of it myself ☺️. I picked a bunch of collards after the snow last week, cooked them up and I’m eating them now! I made a pot back in September and I can totally taste the difference in this batch. I’ve been eating them for breakfast the last couple of days 😬😬🦠🌱💚

Thank you for inspiring me with this video. It's a great and informative video; I don't understand why you only got approximately 4000 hits.....it should be up there around 100k or higher. There is so much garbage on KZbin on hoops.

I built pvc hoop tunnels over my raised beds which are 8 foot x 3 foot, and covered the hoops with a lightweight netting to keep the birds and squirrels out. It worked well for a couple years, but this year the squirrels have started chewing holes in the netting and going inside and digging the beds up. As soon as I repair the chewed hole with string, they chew another one, and another one. I'm thinking of using chicken wire now to cover the hoops. My whole pvc hoop tunnel is hinged on the long side, so lifting it up to access the vegetables is really easy, however, using chicken wire over the hoops is going to add several more pounds to the whole thing.
@BBettaGarden4 жыл бұрын
John Mizak - hi! Thanks for watching. I used bird netting to cover my strawberry bed and I thought I accidentally tore holes in it while pulling it off and on, but now I wonder if it was the squirrels. What are you thinking of using to connect the wire to the PVC? I have plenty of chicken wire and may try that. Re: the weight..I have a cage on one of my beds and it has wire on it. The hardwire that has the small squares that is really firm was too heavy for the doors of the cage..used the wire that has the hexagon shape holes and it much easier to work with and lighter. Going into the third season with it. ☺️

Wouldn't electrical (grey) tube be better to handle UV light?
@BBettaGarden2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The gray tubes probably handle the UV lights better. The white ones are pretty durable though. These were put in, in 2019 and still look solid.

That's a beautiful name. Thinking about building a bed this summer. What kind of would are you using for your beds. I'm hearing different information regarding using pressure lumber. Thank you
@BBettaGarden4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken! Thanks so much!!! You should absolutely build one!! I have one bed in the backyard that I used pressure treated wood for. The others are cedar and were built over the last 2 years. I’m still torn on whether I ‘’needed’ to go with cedar. I’ve read that older pressure treated wood could be dangerous but I’ve also read that the treatment they use now isn’t harmful. I’m not sure which is true or if it’s somewhere in the middle. Sorry I could be more helpful here. 😕

Thanks for this Batavia, I just used bamboo topped with small plastic plant pots and put netting over the top, but it's not that successful. I think i'll have to get me some pvc pipes. One question, how do you secure the covering? Great video my friend really informative. You can still keep the snow lol Have a really great week All the best Steve

You made this look super easy! Is there a certain kind of plastic you recommend? How do you keep ther plastic attached to the hoops
@BBettaGarden5 жыл бұрын
April, Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! Once you get the martial it really easy an easy DIY! I used 6 mil plastic (clear) to cover the bed. This is my first year doing this and I’ve read that 6 mil is good because it keeps some of the cold out and still allows some light in. Multiple layers may be needed depending on the temps. I’ve started with one layer. ☺️ www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-10-ft-x-100-ft-Clear-6-mil-Plastic-Sheeting-CFHD0610C/204711636 I used 4 in x 1 in Spring Clamps to connect the plastic to the hoops. They are a little tight over the 1/2 in pipe so I am looking at some other sizes to see if they may provide a better fit. But for now, these are doing the job. www.homedepot.com/p/ToolPro-4-in-x-1-in-Steel-Spring-Clamp-2-Pack-TP05140/206777764?mtc=Shopping-B-F_Brand-G-Multi-NA-Multi-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-Catchall_PLA&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_Brand-G-Multi-NA-Multi-NA-Feed-PLA-NA-NA-Catchall_PLA-71700000014585962-58700001236285396-92700010802552364&gclid=Cj0KCQiAtf_tBRDtARIsAIbAKe3fM5y4xeCTrdNVFStFV3ib13JpBZ7_SYjQclStNU-9F46V7KhhtwUaAvXcEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Oh and the size of plastic will depend on the size of the beds and the hoops. I went with a roll that was 10ft wide but 20ft might have given me more room on the sides of the beds. We’ll see if I need to go larger/wider.
