I find it interesting that as an artist, well not a professional or anything, I’ve noticed things always have a basic shape/silhouette. Like when I sketch a person. I start out with the simple shapes and then detail it, adding more clothes and accessories. I guess my point is it’s kind of what you did with the orange building. You started off with a box like shape and added some more things to make it detailed and look better. So yeah... Idk I just thought I’d mention this.

I’m an artist too and I left a comment about almost this same thing. Except mine was specifically about painting and values. If the values of something are correct (check it by snapping a pic in grayscale), then it doesn’t matter what kind of crazy colors you put on it. But obvs the better the color scheme is, the better the painting will be overall.

I do have a building question: whats your process of building city builds (like medieval city style like you did in the survival world)? Furthermore, how do you build houses with purpose, and how does that affect what it looks like/the process (ie. A butcher's house/shop in a city)? I'm looking to build a city myself, and this would be so helpful. Thanks Fwhip, love the videos and I take huge inspiration from you!

When building a house with a purpose, for myself I try to make sure the building LOOKS like what I'm trying to make without needing a sign on it. For a butcher, instead of needing a hanging sign saying "butcher shop" You could have an area next to it to store some cattle with a big door leading into the building to get them inside.. and plenty of space to get rid of the smells and whatnot.

@@fWhip Wow, thank you! I am endlessly amazed at the stuff you come up with, and most of it comes from common sense and real life solutions, since it's supposed to be somewhat realistic. Thank you for the reply! I'll make sure to do this and apply this type of concept to other builds.
@dittymargoo
@dittymargoo 3 жыл бұрын
I struggled with this until I listened to one of fWhip's 'tutorials' (can't remember which one) and actually planned a town first. Make a list of the businesses you want in the town (space the mob ones at least in different chunks 'cos of lag) and then look for inspiration with pictures of real life ones. Then I kinda roleplay it ie; cows are smelly and noisy so what would the owner do to minimise it? I gotta say fWhip's flat test world shows us how much effort goes into the 'planning'.

Best advice I've heard yet on the first step of a build - make an interesting shape with a single block first, then make it pretty. Told my seven year old about it, she gave it a try, built an awesome person in minutes, and then a Kirby, and I even managed to get a cool building going. Looking forward to using that some more in the future. Big thanks!

This video feels like exactly what i needed honestly, i'd gotten pretty decent at picking out palletes and texturing as well as just general detailing but i always ended up feeling rather dissapointed with the final products, they just looked boring even with all the hard work I put in and i couldnt understand why exactly, but i think the main problem i had was that i'd always follow fairly ridgid rules when structuring, i'd measure everything out and make sure everything was all symmetrical and lining up, only deviating when pretty much absolutely necessary, it definitely helped me find building bigger structures a lot less intimidating but overall i think its just held me back from creating more lively, inventive, interesting builds, i'v always struggled with interiors also so the little bit abt functional/moveable space will probably come in handy too, thanks a bunch

I've currently been working on trying to improve my interiors (I tend to start a new world with the idea to improve on a different aspect of the game, my last one I practiced and learned terraforming, now I'm learning the secret to good interiors. My biggest issue is finding a balance between not too empty and not too busy, and I feel like I'm slowly improving with it just from taking inspiration from others.

I’m an artist irl. This same “silhouette” principle applies to art as well. When painting something, the most important part is the values (the lights and the darks). Color is amazing, but if your lights and darks are wrong then it will always look off. Similarly, if your values are correct (check it by snapping a pic in grayscale), then it actually doesn’t matter what colors you use. It will still look good. Now if you do this and then use color theory and apply great colors, then you’ve got yourself an incredible piece. So yeah I totally get it that when building the main concern is the actual structure, not the blocks. Thanks for the tips!

5:50 - I was just thinking that. "Looks like a McDonald's Happy Meal bag!". lol I think it's the tower, but the build reminds me of the nursery rhyme "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe". Certainly a classic storybook style medieval house. One thing I like to do when building attached towers, is build a longer building perpendicular, with a lower connecting roof (To give it more elevation change and interest), and the adjacent building gives another point of interest with the roof sloping in the other direction. Eventually, the center might evolve into some sort of inner courtyard, as if it were owned by a wealthy vineyard grower.

Ok I saw another video and mentioned in the comments you were "startling the line" of too much detail but it seems you perfectly understand this concept after the first two minutes. My bad. Tip if anybody is low on inspiration for a silhouette, build an interior floor plan first (build every room's basic box shape, which rooms does that building/house have). Make a random flow (that still has flows) and build a house around those rooms. If you made it sufficiently random you move the rooms around until you get a general house chape.

Highly appreciated for you to sharing the tips! If there's a question that I could ask; it'd be How do you tackle the builds on the hilly terrains? With the hilly terrains, it almost always limit myself to build the buildings around the hills instead of tackling it.

I wish you had a tutorial for your Painter’s Guild from...5 months ago...? I think it’s so pretty and perfect for a Cartographer in my survival world. Soooo, I’m freeze-framing the video in places to try to duplicate it on my own. Yay. 😄👍. *love your builds!*

I just recently found your channel and your building style is one of my favorite! I started a KZbin channel not long ago and tutorials like this are really helping me improve my buildings. I am struggling for inspiration right now, but love the idea of working on better shape buildings. Keep up the quality videos and amazing inspiration!

i love it, it would be something I'd see in a medieval movie about witchers, but, i don't see this as being possible in survival, maybe in a multiplayer server of some sort, but in survival, that would be just claustrophobic I'd hate to live in a place like this. there's too much detail and it's hard to move inside, so idk... tho, i love the exterior of it. really. good job man!

I always say don't be afraid to copy people. It helps you learn. But for someone who's beyond that I'd say don't be afraid to change and alter things.

Really interesting to see how others build. I like the outline idea - going to have to give that a try. Also, I definitely don't use creative world enough to try out new builds before going into the main world and then spending time digging up blocks whilst deciding what to use.
