I love how these shelves look. So clean and organized. I’m considering having the racks installed but it looks like I might get more space doing these shelves.

Good job, although I was going nuts watching you work in sandals waiting for something to drop on your feet 😂. I've been looking at garage shelves videos to get some ideas and I like yours best. Hey buddy, go ahead man. Nothing is mine. That's why I made this video to share for everyone to do their thing. Yes it's funny about the sandals! And that is my trademark nowadays! Some guy made the best comment calling it afghany boots! I'm from the Caribbean and used to sandals my whole life, and these Reef sandals are awesome! But like you said. Just don't drop anything on them! Good luck!

Nicely done! I am planning to build a similar setup and will add one element for visual effect. I will have 3 rods supporting the shelf and bought 3 6' lengths of 1/2 inch red pex tubing (spent a whopping $9) that I will insert the rods through. It's a really clean look and will go well with the black I'm planning to paint the shelves. Pex also comes in blue and white if those colors work better for someone.

Nice a slick. painted and covered the holes. I think the supports. I'm actually ripping out cabinets for two shelves along a wall. Tools currently are under them, but I have a lot of bins and things that don't make the cabinets very functional. Open shelving will be much better. 2 shelves means I just need longer rods.

Yes Sir! These open shelves are handy! Just stored the Christmas tree up there! 7,5 Feet tall and fits easy up there in my space. If you have a taller garage you will have more space! Those rods come in longer lengths! Just think outside of the box and you will make this happen!

There’s plenty of videos that show how this is secured to the ceiling. That said, I prefer your method that hides the rods in the shelves instead of eye bolts on the side. This gives it a much cleaner look. That’s a good finish on the boards to make them look built in. Usually their painted or keep the wood look. This is much cleaner.

Probably the best storage solution abs video showing how it’s done. I know this video has been posted about a year ago but do you have the measurement of all the pieces you had played out on the garage floor before you started? I too want to visit Home Depot and have everything pre-cut.

It looks about 24” from the wall so the storage bins will fit perpendicular to the wall. I want to plan the storage space and buy the appropriate bin size to use the space effectively. Thanks again!
@297modz
@297modz 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugo thanks for watching! The hight from the ceiling to the top part of the shelve is 20". So make sure you calculate the thickness of the plywood before adding your frame. To save time and money, the dept is on one side 28" and the left over of the plywood about 20" I used on the other side. A plywood is normally 48" wide. Measure twice cut once. And have them cut the plywood at lowes or home depot. Let me know if you need anything else.
@1SCme
@1SCme 3 жыл бұрын
If the shelf is lower than the garage door opening height, my recommendation on the side depth is to come out to the edge of the garage door opening. This gets the maximum depth without decreasing the maximum space for the vehicle. If you have a higher ceiling and are going over the garage door height, then go full 4' depth. Test with a string because most garage doors rise higher than garage door rail. If the shelf is over 2' deep but less than 32", or less than 19", cut the plywood sideways in 4' lengths to save on material (12' of shelving 32" deep, 20' of shelving 19" deep). For height I recommend wither a little over 6' (a lot of cabinets are 6' tall, over 80% of males are under 6' tall), 6'8" (same as standard door height clearance), about 7'2" (most minivan hatchbacks open to 7' or less), or the height of the garage door opening (if you have high ceilings). I also recommend finishing off a wall. Narrow the 2x3 (or 2x4) supports at the garage door and continue to the front wall. Let the shelf plywood overhang the support to the same depth. Will need to notch the shelf plywood at front to allow garage door clearance (commonly missed) (test before screwing down).

@Just a normal guy. I have slowly been buying some tools since that video! I still haven't done the floors because I keep spending money on cars and other stuff. But I have a vision for the garage. Hopefully, I can get some done this year. I am planning to build a dedicated wash station and some other stuff. I have it in my mind. I just need to draw it out and start looking for materials I need for it!

The only easy way to do it is if u have an easy attic entrance but here in Oz we dont have it . To take the tile off of roof and going under is a big task but it is worth it. It does give a clean finish

Nice job, as far as that floor I would epoxy it. Rent a shot blaster and buy a quality epoxy system not the home depot junk. Sherwin William's makes an good affordable industrial floor paint I have it on my garage floor. Proper prep is key to a successful job. Be safe brother.

Paper bag floor in the garage. My sister and I did it straight on cement. It’s easy to patch or repair as needed , wears excellent and looks pretty cool. Be sure to use oil based varathane to finish or it won’t wear well. We stained the bags before finishing with varathane.

So a 2x4 is really 1.5x3.5.. if you’re off the 1/4 of an inch then your shelf will be biting only into the drywall.. every stud should be 16 inches from the middle of the stud you found.
@297modz
@297modz 2 жыл бұрын
I used 2x3 not 2x4. For what I use the shelve would be over kill. And yes I agree with 2x4 you would need longer screws!

SO how did you know where to drill the hole in the attic support accurately
@297modz
@297modz 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! With the stud finder I marked where the 2x6 rafters where. Then I measured from the wall till the end of the shelve where the rod will go and from there is just do a pre drill trough the ceiling sheetrock. Then went up and placed th 4x4 support and marked it from the hole and pre drilled the 4x4. I don't remember if I showed that in the video. Hope my answer is clear enough. If not let me know. Did not want to make the video longer by adding all those measurements.

In the attic all you had to do was lay 2x4s across the tops of the ceiling joists . Did not really need 4x4s
@297modz
@297modz 2 жыл бұрын
Some areas there was no room to put on top of the joist. And I'll feel safer sleeping and knowing there is a 4x4 than 2x4. I bought them cheap any way in the back at Home depot where there was 70% off.

Thank you! I thought about it. But I wanted to be 100% sure I can see with my own 👀 that everything is firm and secure. Maybe over kill. But atleast I can sleep good at night. It has been close to a year and a half now. And still doing great.

Question, do you think this could be made without the supporting rods? I don’t have anything on the ceiling to hold the structure
@297modz
@297modz 2 жыл бұрын
If it is only above the toolbox and workbench area you can do it without the rods, because you have 3 sides with all the studs. But it you only have 1 or 2 walls it will come down guaranteed. Other options would be metal brackets below shelve. Less clean look but saves space.
@drewbert588
@drewbert588 2 жыл бұрын
If it's smaller than this build then yes, you can get away with it. If what you have in mind is similar in size then definitely support it with threaded rod. There are definitely ways to support the weight of your build.

If it is where the L shape turns is, because that's where I had 2 different plywood and just to give it extra support. Slight overkill, maybe. But that shelve is going nowhere.
