How to Build Power & Intensity in Obedience Using Frustration | Grassroots K9

Often times when working on obedience the words power and intensity don’t go hand in hand. But when it comes to competition level obedience or high performance obedience these two this are a must. The goal is to have a responsive, and motivated dog that will comply to commands with conviction. In this video we talk about one of the ways we get harness that intensity by reinforcement.

Love this one! I’m a huge fan of the clicker but I’ve never used it variably like you are here. The variable schedule to me always meant sometimes I’ll pay after one behavior and sometimes I’ll pay after 10 and mix it up but every time I click, I pay the dog. I am going to try this and see if it helps build any power into behavior.

Awesome! give it a go and let me know how it effects your dogs attitude. I should have put in a pre warning, obviously the clicker still needs to, the majority of the time produce a reinforcement otherwise we can have the opposite effect and make the marker go extinct

@@grassroots.k9 definitely understand that I need to keep paying him after I click most of the time. I’ve just never messed with this method or being a little slower to pay him post click to help build a little bit of frustration. I can get too clinical during sessions and not react more to his behaviors and emotional state. Love the channel man. Some of the best content on the platform.

My 13mo GSD gets vocal with obedience when she is wanting to get paid and isn't. It definitely build intensity and focus but how to I get rid of the vocalization?

If a dog quickly builds (in seconds) to a level of frustration where they will try to bite, would you correct the dog? Is there anything you can do to dampen drive so the dog is clear headed yet still quick/energetic in their OB?

Yes, great point we have to be clear when we are building frustration and understand frustration isnt necessary for all cases. Some dogs don't need anymore frustration added and some do. We will do a video on dealing with cases like you described soon!
