I've always tried to add top mouldings to my interior doors without tearing down the frame, now when brent explains the function of each part..I guess it's back to the drawing board for me..😎

Great video! Your door headers are so beautiful. I have a door with a transom window on top. Would it be appropriate to add a door header above the transom window? Thanks!

Hmm, maybe. It may be too tall. Too far up. But maybe just depends

Thanks for publishing your expertise on this subject. I'm trying to learn this stuff so I have a real understanding of the proper "rules" and produce more timeless and beautiful designs. You mentioned scaling the mouldings to the size of the opening. Is there a formula for that? Does the opening size determine the width of the side casing and the height of the head casing as well as the dimensions of the mouldings themselves? How can I make microadjustments with a limited selection of mouldings available?

Excellent! Yes, they are all interlinked. General rule of thumb is that good door casings start around 4" and goes up. Further a proportion of 1:6 or 1:7 casing to door opening is another benchmark. The frieze and cornice are all proportional in size. You might watch my videos on classical architecture as I dig into more of the proportions. Keep up the good work.

The video shows a header and cornice for a door with crossetted casing/architrave, a complex treatment. For the simple cornice and architrave shown in the video on your right, what header would be appropriate? How about a 1x5 plain frieze topped with WindsorOne WOHC001 Header Cap for a simple yet elegant header? Any thing else you would do?

I don't like a single crown substituting for a full cornice. First because there is no historic precedent for it and second because it looks clunky. Thanks for your thoughtful consideration.

@@BrentHull This is confusing. I’ve watched your videos on elevating door header’s multiple times. Working on a total remodel of 100 year old home and want to get it right. You refer to entablature above a door for elevation as casing, frieze board and cornice (double bed mold combination, Kuiken 319 one way on bottom for supporting then reversed on top for Ta-Da). Then you refer to crown and beaded backer board that goes against the ceiling as a “simple cornice”. So you would use the casing/frieze/double Kuiken 319 bed mold entablature/cornice as a door header with the simple cornice at the ceiling (4”crown/¾” beaded backer). I’m confused by double use of the word cornice.

Mr Hull, again, your videos are so great! I have one question for you or anyone else here. As I am not from UK or USA, is there any webpage where I could find technical sketches with cross section of doors and windows which are used in USA? Thank you in advance!

I am actually working on this now. I hope to get a collection of detail sketches put together that explain these concepts better. More to come. Thanks for the note.

I suspect. It depends how detailed you want it. Let me know if you end up doing it concrete, would love to see it.
