An alternative: If you don’t have an old garden hose, opt for 3/8 inch PEX tubing. It will fit the 3/8 inch nipple on the pump without an adapter, and the tubing is stiff enough to omit the aluminum rod.

I’m having an issue where the PEX piping is floating up to the top of the reservoir. I’ve used duct tape and it leaves an adhesive residue. Is there anything you would suggest to meet the piping on the bottom of the reservoir?

@@kevonhess9983 I actually used some thick pvc piping cut to about 2 feet in length. I was afraid of rocks affecting ph levels so I went with that. I just drilled a hole on the bottom end and zip tied the end of the piping to it and sunk it to the bottom. It holds it down very well

It is more complicated but really he should call it Actively Aerated Compost Tea to avoid confusion with what some people call Compost or manure tea, which is what you referred to. It is a totally different process and will have totally different results. The reason to Aerate Compost Tea is so that the beneficial microbes have air. These microbes are aerobic microbes so they must have oxygen to survive, thrive, and multiply. The reason for this style of Compost tea is literally just to make the microbes from a small amount of Compost multiply a hundred million times, and then you spray everything with the solution and those beneficial microbes will hit the soil/plants and take action, breaking down and releasing plant available nutrients. The method where you don't use a bubbler, all that is doing is extracting nutrients out of the Compost or manure and into the water to feed the plants. Anaerobic microbes will also multiply and colonize that solution but those are not usually seen as beneficial and in fact the types that out-compete the most are the opportunistic microbes that are pathogenic.

You dont have to make your own! If you want a compost tea bubbler do yourself a favor and just buy a bubble snake. They are just over $20 and made for this purpose. He is making his own because he has a YT channel. If you add up all those brass fittings, clamps, mutilating a garden hose, the aluminum wire etc, the way he made his own is more expensive, not as good, requires you to have tools and takes time to make and experiment. Not to mention he is showing you something that is unsafe. NEVER EVER DRILL SOMETHING YOU ARE HOLDING IN YOUR HAND. Someone needs to have a conversation with this guy because he is promoting people unsafe practices with tools. People make mistakes and accidents do happen. This is part of being human. You are bound to make mistakes or slip etc when using tools. If you do things safely such as drilling in a surface instead of holding the hose in you hand, oops you made a bad hole, no harm done. But if something happens when you are drilling something you are HOLDING IN YOUR HAND, what could the consequences be?

This is a great way to make compost tea, many designs work well. In particular if cleanup is easy on this design, it is a winner as keeping it washed out from batch to batch is important. I have tried several methods and by all means not all. About 5 years ago I made a mini microbulator to fit a 5 gallon bucket. I found plans and built it and have used it regularly every year since. It works real well and no need to use a mesh bag or anything like that, just throw stuff in. It is by no means perfect and to each their own on brewers in my opinion.

Thank you for making this tutorial! The first one I made, I made the holes too big. I just made a new one with the smallest drill bit I had. Air still isn't coming out of the entire length of hose; just the first quarter or third of the section that has holes (the bottom 2/3). That part keeps floating and won't stay submerged. Ideas? Too many holes? I drilled them about an inch apart. Did you drill all the way through the hose or just into one wall? Thank you!

DAN - QUESTION (at the end): I'm a first time vegetable novice. I put kitchen scraps, leaves, some grass in buckets and left them in my yard. The rains filled up the small buckets in the course of a week. I fed them with cardboard, a little kelp/fish fertilizer (I learned about from you). I've been busy planting seeds, potatoes, learning all I can as I'm preparing the area for my container garden and one day I could smell the rotting fruit and veggies in the buckets. I read about adding air so twice I've stirred them vigorously and then I topped them up with straw and put cardboard on top until I know what to do and to abate the smell. Until I can do this over and start a compost tea properly - Can I just pour the water out of the buckets into a large one and add more water to dilute and add more carbon and air to keep it aerobic and use this as compost tea???? I would think it is full of nutrients. Thank you so much, I love your channel!

Good video on the setup. Compost teas can have their place if you have a lot of potted plants where adding traditional compost wouldn't be feasible.... or if you need to stretch you resources to a larger area (at a diluted rate)... but when comparing to just utilizing the compost directly in the garden, there is no benefit. Brewing up compost does not increase the nutritional values of the original input materials. So if you add in A, B, & C.... brew it for a day... you will get some of A, B, & C diluted into the water. The remaining parts will still be locked up in the strained out material. The other benefit that is given to compost teas is the life they bring to your garden. It's very true that brewing up a tea creates lots of life. The problem is that soils are already supporting the maximum amount of life possible based on the food and environment of that very soil. So when you dump all this life into a soil without adding more food or changing the environment, the total life will quickly reduce back down to a level the soil can support. So at the end of the day, you are not increasing the soil life levels. Directly adding compost adds life and food to your soil that lasts for an extended period of the season as the compost is broken down.

Use it! He said in the video, you have to use it immediately - he actually said within 7 hours of turning off the pump. I'd use it as quickly as you can. As soon as you turn the air pump off, bacteria alive in the liquid will continue to consume the oxygen, until the level drops where they begin to die, and worse, dormant anaerobic pathogens might flourish. It only takes 20 minutes for a bacteria to replicate in the right conditions.
