A little about us:
In September 2015, our hearts were hijacked with the dream of living on a large farm, with community, growing food, caring for animals and loving on children in need of care and healing. It was a God moment, where our dreams collided with His dreams… a dream so big we could never do it in our own strength and wisdom. Since then, we have been on a journey to see that dream become a reality. This channel documents that journey.

I suggest that you pre-drill the holes for the conduit prior to putting it together, that way you can just clamp the front and back boards and drill through both boards, ensuring that the holes line up. It’s easier and way quicker, especially if you have a good drill press.

They feed the compost on top earthworms comes to up to eat it. after month or 2 the cardboard sheet will decompose and you can shovel castings from below. upto 2 to3 inches. you keep feeding on top. worms go up and you harvest from below. its continues. its actual reverse of what we do. worms go done in normal harvest and here worms go up

Very nice build! Few comments 1) the bin itself should be taller - at very least 50cm, better 60-70cm. How much scraps you have is urrelevant. If you don't have enough then just wait till the bedding + food reaches around 60cm. Point is that worms like to live in top 30-40cm, so when you harvest from the bottom of tall bin you get very few worms dropping down with casting. In shallow bin like yours you will get plenty of worms in each vermicompost harvest. Some will get injured, others will have to be put back on top. Unnecessary labour and loss of (injuried) worms. 2) if I put thin paper on very bottom I do not wet before putting bedding. Much higher chance of paper ripping and bedding dropping down instantly. Dry paper lining is much stronger. It will get dump and it will decompose anyways. 3) matter of preference but I find it easier to harvest when the rake teeth are shorter. That way you can press it against the grate without harvesting a ton of not yet ready castings.

Just what I was going to say, "That's not deep enough! You'll be scooping worms and cocoons out when you harvest!"
@madmedix2

You've probably found out by now but for those who haven't yet: Cover the bottom with a fine mesh stapled to a frame that you can slide out/swing out of the way to harvest...otherwise the bugs will just enter from the bottom after the paper barrier breaks. You may also want to stick a few safer's bug strips (yellow sticky cards) across the top as the scent of the compost will draw flies towards it but they'll find the sticky traps instead. Great Job!

@@JOEZEP54 I might be able to answer that question now. It looks good - glad to see the height - my first one was too low, and my knees wouldn't let me get back up after harvesting. I lined my bins with salvaged fluorescent light fixture plexiglass. I think you might need to add a 2x6 to the top for more height - you need room for the worms to live and a place for the castings to settle. I'm ninety-three now and have switched over to using grow bags (Gardzen Raised Garden Bed - Planter Box) where I can do everything from the top with the bed sitting on a rack - works great - got the idea from AV (GroBag) and Meme (Bagster).

It will be easier if you lay one side board on top of the other, then drill through both side boards at the same time. You should also lay some sacrificial boards perpendicular to & below the bottom board to save from dulling your drill bit. The boards can be kept aligned by using 3, "2-headed" nails, so the drilled holes will also be aligned.

Good job. That’s a huge worm bin! I don’t know why you would use kraft paper though. Kraft paper is usually wax coated, which might not be good for your worms or your compost for your garden. Kraft paper also has “naturally occurring titanium dioxide coating.” I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. A lot of people use newspaper, which will break down quicker. I would not use corrugated cardboard, either, as cardboard has glue in it, which may or nay not contain harmful chemicals.

Ok Boss as a ol man who has done this kind of thing for Decades I'd offer 1 thing that I didn't see you address. That would be wood rot I didn't hear you say that your wood was treated which it shouldn't be ,but it should be protected . What would have been a simple and cheap long lasting way would be to have lined the box with black plastic ( that comes in rolls ) all except down through the middle so you still get the flow through for your castings but the wood will be protected from wood rot . |Nice set up tho , Not sure I would have put in in my basement but I do live in temprent climent so with the heat frrom the deteriorating compost my warms have plenty of heat to winter over out in my greenhouse where it also contributes to heating my greenhouse. subscribed and will be watching keep up the good work.

You can keep both worms together but red wigglers are more resilient with temperature changes high or low and the night crawlers I believe if below 58 instant death and forget the high- but they are faster composters as I have learned first hand and in general I think it’s better to separate as the night crawlers need to be watched in winter and summers highs and lows

I'm going to have worms live in the basement so I can harvest their castings. Isn't that great?!" "Castings?" "Yes, castings. Its farmer talk for worm poop. But don't worry. I'll take steps to keep the flies to a minimum!" "You're going to fill my basement with worm poop and flies? In the house. Where we live." "It probably won't smell like mildew. I've just ordered a thousand worms. This is going to be great!" "The worms normally live outside. And the flies are outside. Why are we bringing them in the house?" "So I can control them, dear. I need to control the worms and flies and bringing them inside is the best way to do that." "I see, I see. Well of course you can build a box in the basement of our tiny house, fill it woms, dirt, water, whatever you want. Can I help you harvest the worm poop and haul it through the house in a bucket?" "Really? You'll let me do this?!" "No, you moron. Take your shovel and go play outside. You bring a worm in this house and I'll compost your body, got it?" "Right right." Don’t level your legs then screw in that position, I would recommend a square as getting things square it’s better then level when not in final position 5:50 Ps it’s such a minor thing it’s almost not worth mentioning but larger flow through tables can hold up to two tons. Get build thanks for the info.

Nice design. Would have lightly toasted the wood at the end just so it last a bit longer and doesnt get over run by fungi

Although I am not an expert, I have managed a small worm bin and I am very skeptical of this design. The thin Kraft paper holding the compost and worms above is destined to decompose. When that happens what will hold back everything from falling into the trays below? Let alone when you cut the paper with your pitch fork? This doesn't seem like a long term barrier and there is no easy way to replace it. It will fail. Am I missing something?

I believe no on the treated because the chemical could harm your worms

I'm in Zone 5b, will the worms survive in the winter outdoors?

Worms like to go underneath the soil so they will not freeze bcoz they will not stay outside the soil bcoz they like moisture beneath the organic materials so they will eat from below and then in the middle and then above.
